Details/Photos On August 12th 2001, a small roundtable meeting was held at UCLA, Los Angeles, to discuss a wide range of issues surrounding the possibility that, within a few decades, biotechnology might be developed that would enable us to reverse all the key lifespan-limiting components of human aging. The meeting was a sequel to one held in Oakland in October 2000 entitled "Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence" (SENS), so the UCLA meeting was entitled "SENS 2". Course Description: The subject of this course is the social and cultural aspects of aging. The emphasis in the course is on how the social sciences (sociology and anthropology in particular) conceptualize and treat old age rather than the specific findings of sociologists and anthropologists on the aged. Course Objectives: This course is designed to introduce you to the sociological and anthropological treatments of aging. The course is also designed to further your familiarity with doing sociology and anthropology, or at least some aspects of that, in particular doing library research and developing some of the skills, both intellectual and practical, necessary to do that. Format: A combination of lecture and seminar course, your input will be required and will partly determine your grade in the course. Think of the your in class participation as a weekly exam in place of a mid-term and final. Specific readings from the textbook will be assigned each week to enable you to prepare for and to participate in the classes. As you read the assigned material think of how they are sociological. All readings should be done critically, while you are expected to understand the readings, you are free to agree or disagree with them; formulating clear and comprehensible criticisms are central to sociology (along with the other social sciences). Don't get behind, as, while there are no wrong views or opinions on the readings, there are uninformed ones.

    COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will examine a variety of ethical dilemmas posed by an aging society and faced by professionals in their work with the older persons. Among the generic issues to be examined are: respect for persons (autonomy vs. paternalism, self-determinati on, informed consent, truth-telling); beneficence (assessing risks and benefits); and justice (just ways to distribute burdens and benefits). Among the substantive issues to be considered are: the use of chronological age as a criterion in the allocation of scarce health-care and other resources; the roles of families, patients, and medical personnel in decisions to forego life-sustaining treatment; limits on patient and client autonomy in decision-making; relationships among health-care personnel and so cial service providers; and the use of older subjects in biomedical, behavioral, and social research. Sociology Concentrations
    in Criminology and Social Gerontology
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology
    Concentrating in Criminology
Criminology focuses on the nature and causes of crime. A sociology major with a concentration in criminology prepares students for careers in law, law enforcement, probation, corrections, youth counseling, substance abuse counseling or other areas related to criminal justice and human services. This is not a degree in criminal justice, which is an applied field of study that is more focused on the criminal justice system itself. The BA in sociology with a concentration in criminology is more theoretically-oriented and can enhance prospects for long-term career advancement more readily than applied training can. Completion of requirements for the concentration in criminology is certified on graduation transcripts.
Requirements for the Major in Sociology with a Concentration in Criminology
In addition to the college’s General Education and foreign language requirements for the BA degree (consult college catalog for an explanation of each), a total of 36 credit hours in sociology are required for the major in sociology with a concentration in criminology.
