The Sociology of Health and Aging With faculty from FSU's Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, Center for Demography and Population Health, and Department of Sociology Co-directed by Jill Quadagno and R. Jay Turner Our new program allows concentration in one of two related areas or a study plan that draws significantly from both. The Sociology of Mental Health and Substance Use Problems considers the social distributions of psychological distress and disorder, substance abuse, and deviant behavior. It focuses on potentially modifiable social factors relevant to these outcomes. Courses and research mentoring include consideration of stage of life variations in the role and significance of social statuses, social processes and both adverse and confirming life experiences. Much of the training falls within the domain of social epidemiology.

Interdisciplinary Program
The gerontological studies program is a multi-disciplinary program designed to integrate research and theory about aging and old age. Prompted in part by the "graying" of the world's population, humanists, scientists, social scientists, and professionals have become interested in understanding the position of the aged in society, the aging process in various contexts, the meaning of aging to individuals, and the physical changes that accompany aging. The program draws on the most recent thinking and research in a variety of disciplines to provide students with a background that will be helpful after graduation both in work and in graduate or professional school. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the program, the core courses are drawn from four departments: anthropology, communication sciences, history, and sociology. Students may choose from a variety of courses according to their own interests. Most of the electives are not specifically gerontology courses but cover topics that contribute to the understanding of aging and the aged. The perspectives gained in the core courses will provide the student with the background needed to relate the material in the more general courses to gerontological issues. The program is firmly grounded in the liberal arts and thus provides the student with the challenge to think and communicate effectively and to integrate diverse information, theories, and practice.

CHAPTER 1
THE SCOPE OF SOCIAL GERONTOLOGY "In a recent survey, the "end of youth" was considered 54 years old, on average, but that number moved up with the age of the respondents." Introduction Social gerontology is the sociology of aging. It is is the scientific study that examines diverse aspects of agingthat includes "old age," but not exclusively. Though the discipline concentrates heavily on social issues pertaining to the elderly, it also examines the social and biological processes of aging that begins from birth. You and I are aging everyday. And if we reach the life expectancy (the average length of time persons, defined by age, sex, ethnic group, and socioeconomic status in a given society, are expected to live) we, to will experience "old age." Can you imagine that in the 1700s, a person's life expectancy was approximately 35. Today, it is 76 in the United States; however, it is important to note that the life expectancy varies when other variables are taken into account, such as, age, gender, social class, etc.

Preface
Introduction
Aging is both a personal and a social phenomenon. Individuals change as they move through the life cycle, and some of the physical and social changes that occur in the individual life are called aging. Yet societies also age, and societal aging has an impact on the lives of individuals as well. In this course we will focus on both the individual and the social aspects of the aging process, the consequences these have, in turn, for how societies are structured, and the implications for social change over time. The objectives of this course are to present a general overview of the field of aging in terms of social and demographic change and to describe the impact of this change on both individuals and societal institutions. Specific goals will be:
  • to emphasize the importance of culture and how it shapes behavior;
    to look at older people in social groups;
    to examine the position of the elderly in relation to social institutions: family, economy, political system, religion, and education;

Learning Objectives
  • Identify many of the myths of old age and the aging process to which we are exposed by the presence and even acceptance of these stereotypes in our society.
    Describe many of these stereotypes and explain how they may affect our perceptions of the aged and our social attitudes toward aging and old age.
    Define the following terms: ageism, stereotype, culture, cultural, demography, socialization, gerontology, aging, cohort, period, cross-sectional research, longitudinal research, hypothesis, variables, sociology, social structure, theory, social status, life span, life expectancy.
    Discuss the age/period/cohort influences and explanations found in the theories and research of social gerontology.
    Select and justify the appropriate research technique (method and analysis) to study a given problem in social gerontology.
Introduction
The Myths of Aging When we form an impression of someone, part of what we see is what is really there and part of what we see is influenced by what we have been taught to think is associated with the physical characteristics we have taken into account. Consequently, our impressions are influenced by

    Students majoring in sociology may select a concentration of medical sociology courses. These courses form a background for students planning to work in health care institutions or social service agencies that provide assistance to people with medical problems and/or disabilities. A medical sociology concentration is helpful for students in pre-medicine, pharmacy, nursing, health care administration, medical technology, social work or pre-mortuary science.
    The Program
    Medical sociology, a subfield of sociology, examines topics such as the social aspects of physical and mental illness, physician-patient relationships, the organization and structure of health organizations and the socio-economic basis of the health care system. Sociology majors who focus on medical sociology develop research and analytical skills to address issues facing health care providers and those needing health care.

    Preparation A basic background in the social and behavioral sciences is important for a career in medical sociology. Students are encouraged to plan a curriculum that gives them a broad general education. Many students pursue their interest in sociology at the graduate level. North Dakota State University offers graduate work leading to a master's degree. Students then may elect to pursue Ph.D. degrees at other universities.
