HOME SOCIOLOGY IN THE NEWS AUTHOR'S MESSAGE Sociologically, aging is defined as the combination of biological, psychological, and social processes that affect people as they grow older. The population in the United States and other industrialized countries is graying. In this chapter, you will learn social gerontology and other sociological theories of aging. Some of the special challenges and problems that the elderly face will be examined. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the impact of globalization and the graying of the world population on the treatment of elderly throughout the world. The Graying of U.S. Society "Graying" happens when societies experience an increase in the proportion of the population becoming elderly. It is the result of two long-term demographic trends in industrialized countries:
  • Lower fertility rates (the tendency of families to have fewer children) Lower mortality rates and longer life expectancy
The populations in the United States and other industrialized countries are graying.

Behavioral and Social Research Overview The Behavioral and Social Research (BSR) Program supports basic social and behavioral research and research training on aging processes and the place of older people in society. It focuses on how people change with aging, on the interrelationships between older people and social institutions (e.g., the family, health-care systems), and on the societal impact of the changing age composition of the population. The Health and Aging specialization within sociology investigates how social structures and processes affect health and life course development.
The objective of the Health and Aging program is to prepare students as scholars for the scientific analysis of critical health issues, especially in an aging society. Graduates may seek to conduct or apply research, to teach in universities or other settings, or to work in health or social service organization.
Graduate students may pursue Ph.D. and M.S. degrees with a specialization in either medical sociology or the sociology of aging in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The department also offers sociological areas of emphasis in religion; family, sex, and gender; politics and economy; and law and society.
The Health and Aging program combines coursework, research, and teaching experiences. Coursework emphasizes theoretical and methodological advances in the field, with consideration of both micro and macro sociological approaches. Students are encouraged to explore their areas of interest in courses offered outside the department.

Utilizing a social problems approach, this text examines how aging is a social construct, rather than a specific chronological age or set of conditions, and how aging is a consequence of various social structural factors, rather than a cause.
