WHAT IF I SUSPECT AGE DISCRIMINATION?
If you believe that you have been illegally discriminated against based on your age, file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC, for short) within a certain time frame. You can mail the complaint, call the EEOC toll free at 1-800-669-EEOC or 800-669-6820 or drop in at the EEOC local offices in person. More information on filing a complaint can be located on-line at the EEOC’s Internet address at: http://www.eeoc.gov . (See also our section on Job Description for more details.)
Also, file a copy of the complaint with your local state office of civil rights. Be prepared to document your allegation.
The EEOC will investigate and attempt to resolve the problem informally. The EEOC will file suit against the employer, but, due to budgetary constraints, lawsuits are filed in only a very small number of cases. Individuals, however, can sue independently if the EEOC has not filed its own lawsuit.

Age Discrimination A P ervasive And Damaging Influence AOA
An Harris survey, conducted in 1992, found that 5.4 million older Americansone in seven of those 55 and older who were not working at that timewere willing to work but could not find a suitable job. These discouraging statistics were cited in The Untapped Resource , a 1993 report on "The Americans Over 55 at Work Program," a 5-year research effort conducted by the Commonwealth Fund to examine the productive potential of older Americans.
Subtle Age Bias Does the Most Damage
Age discrimination can be obvious, such as a bank hiring a pretty, inexperienced young woman as a teller instead of an older woman with a strong background in similar jobs. But it's the subtler forms of age discrimination that may have the most powerful effect on cutting short the productive years of Americansthe law partner who is moved to a smaller office when he passes 60, the 50-year-old professional who knows hard work won't bring any more promotions, the vacancy filled by a younger staff member before older workers even know about it, and the new boss who makes life so miserable for the 60-year-old secretary, he inherits, that she quits.

21 May Poor suffer most from pollution
Environmentalists and political parties would secure wider public support if they were more effective at linking environmental issues to poverty and ill-health, according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr). In a new report published today, ippr says rather than thinking there are votes in rare birds and pandas, environmentalists should be linking up poverty, pollution and the quality of local environments. Ippr's research says industrial sites are disproportionately located in deprived areas, while children living in deprived areas are five times more likely to be killed by a car. The report shows that in deprived communities, lack of access to clean air and green spaces can often exacerbate respiratory diseases, like asthma, and other health problems such as obesity. Julie Foley, ippr Senior Research Fellow, said:
"In developing countries, environmental issues are so bound up with issues of poverty and distributive justice that they are almost indistinguishable. In the UK, the same dynamic is in play, with our poorest communities often most affected by environmental problems but the links have not been made effectively. For environmentalists, making the connection between environmental protection and distributive justice should underpin their understanding of sustainable development. It is the interaction between people and the environment that offers greater appeal and why there simply aren't any votes in birds and pandas.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS U. S. Dept. of Labor, Women's Bureau IF you are a working woman age 40 or over, you may be experiencing age or sex discrimination. Now or in the past, your job opportunities may have been limited by unequal pay or lack of equal access to promotions. You may have lost your job in "downsizing," only to be replaced by a younger worker. Since many women earn less than men, and women are more often part-time or temporary workers, their pension benefits are much less than men's. Some of these barriers to fair employment may constitute age discrimination. A federal law protects workers against age discrimination - the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) . It outlaws discrimination in recruitment, hiring, pay, benefits, training, promotion, job retention, and other employment practices. HAS ANY OF THESE THINGS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?
  • You didn't get hired because the employer wanted a younger looking person to do the job.
You were passed over for training courses and then got a negative job evaluation because you weren't "flexible" in taking on new assignments.

US Senator Charles E. Schumer today pushed the Federal Trade Commission to stop threatening New Yorkers with a 17-month delay of their right to access free credit reports. In a letter to FTC Chairman Timothy J. Muris, Schumer wrote: "There's no rhyme or reason for why New Yorkers are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to free credit reports. The FTC should come up with a fair way to implement this plan that does not discriminate based on where people live." Schumer has posted information about how to register objections with the FTC and offers draft text for New Yorkers to download and send as emails or letters to the FTC.

Age Discrimination:
A P ERVASIVE AND D AMAGING I NFLUENCE Age discrimination continues to damage our society, reducing both the incomes and the self-confidence of millions of Americans. A Louis Harris survey, conducted in 1989, reported that one million workers aged 50 to 64 believed that they would be forced to retire before they were ready. Most of this group, anticipating an unwanted early retirement, said they would prefer to work for years longer. Another Harris survey, conducted in 1992, found that 5.4 million older Americansone in seven of those 55 and older who were not working at that timewere willing to work but could not find a suitable job.

Swetnam Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 tswetnam@ltrr.arizona.edu Abstract. The great ecological diversity of landscapes in the American Southwest results from combinations of the underlying patterns of topographic complexity, climatic variability, and environmental histories. This chapter illustrates some high-resolution and long-term data sets and approaches for reconstructing landscape change in the Southwest, including the paleobotanical record, repeat photography, and fire-scar histories from tree rings. We explore the effectiveness of collecting historical data at multiple locations to build networks that allow analyses to be scaled up from localities to regions and the use of historical data to discriminate between natural and cultural causes of environmental change. Introduction The American Southwest is a region where great ecological diversity is maintained by topographic complexity and extreme variability in climate. Despite the pervasive influence of livestock grazing and other human land uses in the Southwest, natural vegetation predominates over vast tracts of public land. Because natural processes are still very much in play, human impacts in this region are seldom "clearly" evident. In fact, the greatest challenge in assembling and interpreting a land-use history of the Southwest is disentangling cultural from natural causes of environmental change. We have employed a variety of tools, techniques, and data types to address this challenge.

Addressing Sexual Orientation Discrimination
In Federal Civilian Employment
A Guide to Employee's Rights
Introduction Purpose Agency Commitment Legal Protections ... Conclusion
Introduction
Executive Order 13087, issued on May 28, 1998, prohibits discrimination based upon sexual orientation within Executive Branch civilian employment. The Executive Order states this policy uniformly by adding sexual orientation to the list of categories for which discrimination is prohibited. The other categories are race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, and age. On May 2, 2000, Executive Order 13153 added "status as a parent" to the list of categories for which discrimination is prohibited. It is the policy of the Federal Government to provide an equal opportunity to all of its employees. Federal employees should be able to perform their jobs in workplaces free from discrimination-whether that discrimination is based on color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, age or sexual orientation. The President's Executive Order states, as a matter of Federal policy, that a person's sexual orientation should not be the basis for the denial of a job or a promotion. As the Nation's largest employer, the Federal Government sets an example for other employers that employment discrimination based upon sexual orientation is not acceptable. Existing Federal law prohibits discrimination in certain employment decisions when the decisions are based upon conduct that does not adversely affect employee performance. Federal employees should be able to perform their jobs in workplaces free from discrimination.
