Traveling With Your Pet Dogs, cats, and most other warm-blooded animals transported in commerce are protected by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). The U.S. Department of Agriculture¹s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) enforces this law. APHIS¹ shipping regulations help ensure that people who transport and handle animals covered under the AWA treat them humanely. Airlines and other shippers are affected by regulations established to protect the wellbeing of animals in transit. Trip Preparation for Air Transportation Before taking a flight with your animal, have your veterinarian examine your pet to ensure that it is healthy enough to make the trip. Airlines and State health officials generally require health certificates for all animals transported by air. In most cases, health certificates must be issued by a licensed veterinarian who examined the animal within 10 days of transport. Ask your veterinarian to provide any required vaccinations or treatments. Administer tranquilizers only if specifically prescribed by your veterinarian and only in the prescribed dosage. Trips Outside the Continental United States Hawaii, U.S. territories, and certain foreign governments have quarantine or health requirements for arriving pets. For information on Hawaii¹s requirements, contact your State Veterinarian¹s office. For U.S. territories and foreign countries, contact the appropriate embassy, governmental agency, or consulate at least 4 weeks in advance. You may also contact a full-service travel agency for assistance. Additional airline requirements also exist for inter-national flights. These rules may require additional ventilation, labeling, and a shipper¹s certification. Contact your airline for information about these requirements.

Age Discrimination FAQ
Protect yourself against an employer who discriminates against you because of your age.
America's workforce is aging. And as workers stay on the job longer, they generally move up the compensation ladder, acquiring more benefits and higher salaries. They also become more expensive for employers to keep around. This has led to a problem for many older workers, who increasingly face lay-offs (quaintly known as company downsizing or "right" sizing) and difficulties finding new jobs. Laws now afford some protection to older workers who face discrimination in the workplace and also help protect their pension rights when they leave.
My employer has just cut the workforce in half, singling out older workers who have higher salaries. Is there any legal protection for us?
Possibly. The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) provides that workers over the age of 40 cannot be arbitrarily discriminated against because of age in any employment decision. Perhaps the single most important rule under the ADEA is that no worker can be forced to retire.

How the Government Measures Unemployment
(This document is an updated version of Report 864, "How the Government Measures Unemployment," published in March 1994. Information here reflects procedures as of July 2001.)
Why does the Government collect statistics on the unemployed?
When workers are unemployed, they, their families and the country as a whole lose. Workers and their families lose wages, and the country loses the goods or services which could have been produced. In addition, the purchasing power of these workers is lost, which can lead to unemployment for yet other workers. To know about unemploymentthe extent and nature of the problemrequires information. How many people are unemployed? How did they become unemployed? How long have they been unemployed? Are their numbers growing or declining? Are they men or women? Are they young or old? Are they white or black or of Hispanic origin? Are they skilled or unskilled? Are they the sole support of their families, or do other family members have jobs? Are they more concentrated in one area of the country than another? After these statistics are obtained, they have to be interpreted properly so they can be usedtogether with other economic databy policymakers in making decisions as to whether measures should be taken to influence the future course of the economy or to aid those affected by joblessness.

what's protecting us? "It's wrong when someone avoids taking a genetic test that could save a life just because they're so afraid that the genetic information will be used against them…It's more than wrong, it's a life-threatening abuse of a potentially life-saving discovery." President William J. Clinton (1997 press conference) "Just as we have addressed discrimination based on race, gender and age, we must now prevent discrimination based on genetic information." President George W. Bush (2001 radio address)
Genetic information has the potential to revolutionize medicine and lead to unprecedented prevention, treatment and cure. However, it also has the potential to do harm. Genetic information can be misused, and currently there are few protections in place to prevent it. Each of us has probably half a dozen or more mutations in our genes that put us at risk for developing disease. This means that, if our genes were sequenced, virtually all of us could be potential victims of genetic discrimination in health insurance or in the workplace.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Background In the 1960s, Americans who knew only the potential of "equal protection of the laws" expected the president, the Congress, and the courts to fulfill the promise of the 14th Amendment. In response, all three branches of the federal governmentas well as the public at largedebated a fundamental constitutional question: Does the Constitution's prohibition of denying equal protection always ban the use of racial, ethnic, or gender criteria in an attempt to bring social justice and social benefits?

Business Structure Establishing Tax Accounts Employment may be defined differently by laws regarding taxes, worker compensation, labor, and unemployment. Often, a worker's status as an employee is dependent on how much work is performed and how wages are paid. Some laws use tests involving the amount of control the payer has over how, where, and when the work is done. The IRS has Publication 15A , which outlines the criteria it uses to make the determination of whether a worker is an employee or an independent contractor.
