SITE MAP WILDLIFE NEWS WildNet Africa News Archive Seven Ghiazza elephants can be sent to European zoos. (8 December, 1998) Magistrate partially revokes order after agreement is reached on conditions for relocation of animals. The Brits Magistrate's Court ruled yesterday that seven of the 30 juvenile elephants which were allegedly ill-treated on a plot outside Brits could be exported to overseas zoos. Magistrate Herman Glas partially revoked an order he made last week giving custody of the animals to the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "The order I made last week is revoked in regard to these seven elephants," he said. Glas made the ruling after an agreement was reached between lawyers for the NSPCA and for the elephants' owner, African Game Services boss Riccardo Ghiazza. The two parties agreed that the export would take place no later than December 16 and that two NSPCA officials would be allowed to examine the animals before they are moved. Other conditions include that African Game Services must obtain medical certificates for the elephants from the state veterinarian and the NCSPCA officials will be allowed to monitor their relocation. The recipient zoos must be told by the company that the elephants may have future behavioral problems because of the alleged abuse, and must acknowledge in writing that they were aware of the court proceedings. Erfurt Zoo and Dresden Zoo, both in Germany, are to get two elephants each, and the other three are headed for a zoo in Basel, Switzerland.

Award-winning Exhibits and Exhibit Standouts
Here, visitors take an intriguing journey to the shola forests of the Western Ghats in India; a rocky outcrop in Malaysia; and a forest canopy in Northern Borneo. The 2.7-acre exhibit presents lion-tailed macaques, Malayan tapirs, siamang apes and Indian pythons. The trail concludes with an elevated boardwalk where visitors come eye-to-eye with orangutans living in treetops and behaving much as they do in the wild; this outdoor habitat is the first-ever, open forested canopy for orangutans. The 6-acre exhibit transports visitors to three cold, rugged regions of the far north: the weather-stunted forests of the taiga, the treeless plains of the tundra and the high crags of the montane. Animal residents include grizzly bears, wolves, elk, river otters, mountain goats and bald eagles. The expansive exhibit contains seven distinct plant communities ranging from white and black spruce to quaking aspen to dwarf arctic willow. Highlights include a crawl-in wolf den, a bear cave, underwater viewing of grizzlies and river otters, an eagle viewing shelter, and a breathtaking 10-foot curving mural that immerses visitors in the arctic tundra. Home to the greatest concentration of plant and animal species at the zoo, nearly 70 animal and more than 680 plant species represent Asian, African, and Central and South American rain forests. From the forest floor to the understory to the canopy, visitors encounter ocelots, poison dart frogs, snakes and birds in an indoor, humid environment. The outdoor loop features lemurs and two western lowland gorilla groups.

LOS ANGELES - A coalition of animal rights and wildlife preservation groups claimed this week that had blocked - at least temporarily - two U.S. zoos from importing African elephants from a Swaziland preserve.
The San Diego and Tampa, Florida zoos surrendered permits granted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to import the 11 African elephants after the agency discovered discrepancies on their permit applications, agency spokeswoman Pat Fisher said. The elephants had been expected to arrive in mid-May or June but their arrival probably will now be delayed while the zoos apply for new permits, said Timothy Van Norman, chief of Fish and Wildlife's branch of international permits.

The African penguin is one of 4 species of the genus Spheniscus. The other 3 species are the Humboldt, Magellanic and the Galapagos penguins. All live in temperate regions with the African being native to South Africa and Namibia. African penguins were the first penguin species known to Europeans. They nest in burrows for protection from the hot sun and predators. Often referred to as jackass penguin due to the fact that their vocalizations sound like the braying of donkeys.

The African Wild Dog
Rare wild dogs give clues to pet behavior
Pat Callahan opened the door into the grotto and the four African wild dogs loped down from the rise at the rear of the enclosure to investigate the keeper and his two companions. Closer they came, eyes intent on the interlopers, large ears ready to scoop up any aberrant sound. They stopped about 10 feet from the visitors and watched for several minutes, curious, alert for any threat. The tension was too much for the black and gold patchwork canids: they exploded into motion, cruising around and around the grotto in perfect unison, long legs consuming ground in a graceful lope, bodies touching as if attached by Velcro strips. They vocalized as they ran, talking to each other and the world in a rapid, chittery language that reinforces the pack bond that is essential for their survival in the wild. The foursome of distant dog-relatives lives at the Cincinnati Zoo, in part through the generosity of the Cincinnati Kennel Club. The zoo is involved in an international effort to save the rare canids, which are threatened by habitat loss and disease in their native Africa. Standing still

New this Summer to ARV...
Colobus Monkeys Make Summer a Swingin’ Time

You feel like you could swing right along with those incredible black and white aerialists, they make it look so easy! Colobus monkeys – with their beautiful black and white fur and unbelievable grace – are often seen gliding along in towering trees, using branches as trampolines to get liftoff for leaps of up to 50 feet. And now, you can see these sensational primates in a new high-rise exhibit in the Zoo’s African Rift Valley, sponsored this summer by The Gazette, King Soopers and Pepsi. An interesting feature of the new exhibit is the inclusion of two African ground hornbills, a favorite of visitors. The addition of the ground birds is experimental. The natural curiosity of the colobus and the “howdy friend” attitude of the hornbills are sure to produce an entertaining dynamic. If the species take a liking to each other, the living arrangement may become permanent. Native to west central and east Africa, black and white colobus monkeys are endangered in the wild. Their pelts are routinely used for tribal rituals and their meat is a source of protein for the region’s human inhabitants. Other colobus predators include the leopard and the crowned hawk eagle. Colobus are generally easy-going; social grooming is a major adult activity. Colobus derived their name from the Greek word meaning “mutilated one” because, unlike other monkeys, they do not have thumbs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN ZOO’S
AFRICAN RIFT VALLEY
READIES FOR GRAND OPENING One Exhibit. Endless Adventures. April 11, 2003
– There is a flurry of activity at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo as it nears the grand opening date of its much-anticipated African Rift Valley, set for Friday, May 23 at 10 a.m. The completion of this state-of-the-art zoological exhibition is the culmination of years of planning coupled with the successful completion of an $11 million capital campaign. The African Rift Valley, set to open to the public on May 23, immerses guests in up-close animal encounters and interactive learning experiences. The exhibit features a giant “talking” baobab tree, research outpost, play village and safari discovery trail. The biggest attraction to open in Colorado Springs in many years, ARV will be the signature exhibit at the Zoo’s “front door,” spotlighting the zoological park’s world-renowned giraffe herd – the largest of any zoo in the world. Zoo visitors will hand-feed the giraffes, which eventually will number 30 in all, at several feeding stations located throughout the exhibit. And a twice daily giraffe “stampede” is sure to be a hit with guests as they line the elevated boardwalk to watch the giraffe herd pass through a drawbridge, allowing them to leave their state-of-the-art building each morning and re-enter each evening. In addition to the giraffe herd, two species of antelope, three species of African ground birds, red river hogs, cattle egrets, a vulture and a colony of meerkats will also be part of the ARV “family.” Some areas of the exhibit will mix species and, with barriers skillfully hidden, animals will appear to range freely as they do in the wild.
