List of Institutions holding Penguins
We have compiled from several sources, as complete a list of Institutions holding penguins as we can manage. As far as we can tell the list is accurate as at the beginning of 2002. We have at the top a list of countries and then a separate table for each country. For each institution we give its name, the town or city where it is located, and the species of penguins held. If we have visited the institution ourselves we also give our "rating". You can find up to date information about the holdings of all animals in all zoos around the world on the ISIS web site at www.isis.org . However, this site lists only by species and not by zoo and you will need to know the latin names for the species you are looking up.

Chris Peters from the Rotterdam Zoo
March 2003 Dear IZE members, At the moment we are all living in a very uncertain period. What will happen after the war with Iraq? When will the local and world economy recover? And so on, and so on. All this uncertainty As I wrote in the last column, a steering group has been established under the chairmanship of Jo Gibbs, Director of Bristol Zoo Gardens and chair of WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) Conservation Committee. A core group will manage and coordinate the project: Jo Gibbs, Peter Olney (editor), Miranda Stevenson (project coordinator), Onnie Byers, Peter Dollinger, Bert de Boer and Chris West. The input from the IZE will be impressive. For example our Secretary, Stephen Woollard is doing a great job as the lead author for the education chapter. But many IZE members from all the continents are involved in the complex process of research and selecting information. The first draft will be ready before the WAZA Conference in November '03 to be held in Costa Rica. After the IZE Conference in Vienna, comes the year of regional conferences. The IZE Regional Representative for Latin-America, Maria Eugenia Martinez, is very busy organizing the regional Latin-American Zoo Educators meeting in May (7-10) at Guadalajara Zoo in Mexico. Major issues such as those below will be on the agenda:

TOP ZOOS
by Allen W. Nyhuis
We live in a competitive society that always wants to know what's best. There are "Top 10" lists for everything from city populations to college sports teams. I don’t rank zoos from best to worst, nor do I give them an overall numeric score. Ranking zoos is a subjective matter.  Some visitors want to see lots of birds. Others aren't interested in birds and want to see reptiles or bears. So rating a zoo is dependent on the particular interests of the individual visitor. My choice as the best zoo in each category is labeled "#1," while the runner-ups are listed in alphabetical order as "#2." The remaining zoos in each top ten are listed next, also in alphabetical order.

4 Gorillas Adjust to New S. Africa Zoo

APO 04/20 0130 4 Gorillas Adjust to New S. Africa Zoo JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) Four young African gorillas, captured illegally and held at a Malaysian zoo, are adjusting well to their new home at the Pretoria National Zoological Gardens, officials said Monday. Animal activists, however, said the gorillas would be better off at a sanctuary in the West African nation of Cameroon, where poachers are believed to have caught them. The gorillas one male and three females about 3-4 years old arrived at the Pretoria zoo Wednesday. After six weeks' quarantine, they will be transferred to the zoo's gorilla enclosure, which is being refurbished to a "state of the art" exhibition center, said Willie Labuschagne, the zoo's executive director. Pretoria has one other gorilla, a male named Hobbit who is nearly 30 years old.

UK Zoos Lead The Way In Promoting Elephants' Welfare
The Zoo Federation today published the world’s first management guidelines for the welfare of elephants in zoos, tackling head-on the most emotive and sensitive issues surrounding these endangered species. Zoos recognise that welfare standards, which have been evolving over the last 10 years, need to be continually reviewed. The guidelines define and recommend current best practice in all aspects of elephant welfare including nutrition, breeding, training and keeper safety. Chris West, the chair of the Federation’s Elephant Group, said: “For the first time, elephant keepers in this country have a comprehensive guide to help them provide the best possible standards of care for their elephants. “As long as these wonderful and complex animals are in our care, we will be dedicated to ensuring they enjoy the full range of their natural behaviours.” These guidelines are to be circulated to members of the Zoos Forum*, for consideration.  It is hoped that the Forum, which includes representatives from leading animal welfare organisations, will endorse the guidelines and it is widely expected that zoos throughout Europe will adopt them. The document is the result of extensive consultation over a three-year period with all UK elephant collections, and brings together the expertise of zoo managers and keepers, veterinarians, zoo biologists, nutritionists and educationalists and others.

U.S. zoos give up permits to take African elephants
    30 April 2003
By Gina Keating, Reuters LOS ANGELES
    — A coalition of animal rights and wildlife preservation groups claimed Tuesday that they had blocked — at least temporarily — two U.S. zoos from importing African elephants from a Swaziland preserve. The San Diego and Tampa, Fla., zoos surrendered permits granted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to import the 11 African elephants after the agency discovered discrepancies on their permit applications, agency spokeswoman Pat Fisher said. The elephants had been expected to arrive in mid-May or June, but their arrival probably will now be delayed while the zoos apply for new permits, said Timothy Van Norman, chief of Fish and Wildlife's branch of international permits. Van Norman said his agency had information that the zoos misrepresented where and how the elephants were captured. "We are hoping to deal with this application as quickly as possible, but we aren't going to rush and make errors," he said. The flap was spurred by a coalition led by the British-based Born Free Foundation and the U.S. group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which sued the Department of the Interior to block it from issuing importation permits to the zoos. The groups allege that captive elephants' breeding programs are a sham and that the zoos want the huge creatures mainly because they draw paying visitors.

It's not Australia, but koalas feel at home. If you are the sort of person who complains about overly large zoo exhibits that allow animals to stray from the most prominent viewing areas, you should take a closer look at what these wildlife parks are trying to accomplish. As "Gorilla Tropics," "Polar Bear Plunge," and other San Diego Zoo areas demonstrate in ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS, the zoo is not a "living museum," but a place where animals should feel at home. Today, zoos combine educational exhibit areas with backstage research areas where zoologists study the animals under their care.
Visitors are captivated by animals at the zoo. During the latter part of the 20th century, zoos began to provide a new experience for visitors by replacing the iron bars and concrete walls of cages with protective moats, bigger animal areas, and recreated tropical rainforests. The San Diego Zoo, founded in 1916, helped pioneer this shift.
Zoos used to keep all animals in cages. In 1868, Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo was reportedly the first zoo in the United States to open its gates to the public, followed closely by the Philadelphia Zoo and New York's Central Park Zoo. These parks filled their cages with wild-caught animals. As the burgeoning populations and growing industries of the 20th century began decimating wild habitats, zoos took on the role of housing remnants of once-thriving animal populations.
Then in 1907, Carl Hagenbeck, of the Tierpark in Hamburg, Germany, thought of using moats rather than bars to enclose animals, but this trend took more than a few years to catch on. Dr. Harry Wegeforth, founder of the San Diego Zoo, was determined to create moated exhibits, and in 1922, the first lion area opened, free of any enclosing wires. At first, visitors were afraid that the lions would escape and attack them.

Kinsel of the Zoological Pathology Program at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. "These concerns are very important for the international wildlife community." Namibia sought help from Chicago's Brookfield Zoo and the UI in 1994. A collaborative program, which primarily focuses on the 8,600-square-mile Etosha National Park, has led to an unprecedented database of demographics, habitats, diseases, genetics and reproductive issues related to the lion (Panthera leo). Two years ago, the researchers reported that all of Africa's lions south of the equator are of the same sub-species, said Michael B. Briggs of the Chicago Zoological Society at the Brookfield Zoo. "We found regional differences, displayed in their adaptation to their environment, but it was clear from a genetic standpoint that it wouldn't hurt to move animals from one place to another," he said.
