NEWS PROJECTS EDUCATION GET INVOLVED ... EXTRAS U.S. Zoo Import of African Elephants Challenged SAN DIEGO, California - Charging that the San Diego Zoo and the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida plan to import 11 wild African elephants from Swaziland in violation of U.S. and international endangered species laws, an international coalition of wildlife conservation and animal protection organizations has sent formal notice to the zoos, demanding that they surrender the federal permits authorizing the imports or face legal action. The notice, sent on March 26, challenges the import of seven elephants to
San Diego and four to Lowry Park. The 10 to 12 year old elephants are protected by both the U.S. Endangered Species Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The imports would mark the first time in over a decade that African elephants will be removed from the wild and sold to U.S. zoos for exhibition. Elephants currently at San Diego zoo The zoos want the young elephants for U.S. captive breeding programs that will ensure a future supply of elephants - particularly baby elephants, who are extremely popular with zoo visitors - for public exhibition, the coalition says. These captive bred elephants are not intended for reintroduction into the wild. While the San Diego Zoo is paying the modest sum of $85,000 for seven elephants, and the Lowry Zoo is paying $48,000 for four, this is an enormous amount of money in Swaziland.

LOS ANGELES - A coalition of animal rights and wildlife preservation groups claimed this week that had blocked - at least temporarily - two U.S. zoos from importing African elephants from a Swaziland preserve.
The San Diego and Tampa, Florida zoos surrendered permits granted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to import the 11 African elephants after the agency discovered discrepancies on their permit applications, agency spokeswoman Pat Fisher said. The elephants had been expected to arrive in mid-May or June but their arrival probably will now be delayed while the zoos apply for new permits, said Timothy Van Norman, chief of Fish and Wildlife's branch of international permits.

Rudi the orangutan is one of six orangutans at the Houston Zoo. Zoos are one of the best places for families to spend a day. Children, especially, are captivated by animals, particularly animals that are unusual to them. But zoos have a wonderful effect on adults, too. Texas' biggest cities are home to some of the best zoos in the U.S. But there are also some great zoos in a few Texas cities where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find them. Here is our rundown of the best zoos in Texas: Fort Worth Zoo
The Fort Worth Zoo houses 435 species of animals, including 35 endangered species. It is the only zoo in the U.S. to house representatives of all four Great Ape species — gorillas, orangutans, bonobos and chimpanzees; and the only zoo in Texas with pygmy chimps. This zoo has one of the largest reptile collections in the U.S., and is also one of only five zoos in the world to display three of the five rhino species in captivity: black, white and one-horned Asian rhinos. Info: (817) 759-7555. Dallas Zoo
The Dallas Zoo's nearly 100 acres, in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, are home to around 8,000 animals. It's the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888. The park's six habitats can be toured by monorail via the Monorail Safari, a one-mile tour lasting about 25 minutes. The Dallas Zoo is a participant in the national Species Survival Plans for 37 species, including gorillas, tigers, chimps, lemurs, okapis and Bali mynahs. Info: (214) 670-5656.

II. GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE AND HABITAT:
From northern Zimbabwe to the Sudan in East Africa. Inhabits grasslands, especially those with scattered trees.

III. DIET:
In the wild, non-selective grazing of available grasses, especially grass stems and sheaths. Teeth very high crowned, an adaptation to chewing silica-rich grasses. Large barrel-shaped body holds a very large amount of relatively un-nutritious grass. Very dependent on water. At the zoo, they eat hay and alfalfa pellets fed inside at night.
IV. LIFE CYCLE/SOCIAL STRUCTURE:
Males are not sexually mature until 5 to 6 years of age, although in zoos breeding may occur at 3 years of age. Until old enough to establish their own breeding groups, young males remain with their families or leave to form bachelor herds of 2 to 10 individuals. However, they retain good relationships with their fathers. Females have first estrous at 13-18 months but do not become fertile for another year. Young females have a characteristic stance during estrous which attracts nearby males who then attempt to abduct her. The abductor may have to fight her father to acquire her. She may be abducted by several males until she learns not to show estrous. This forceful removal from the family acts to prevent inbreeding.

"Repackaged" Wild African Elephant Import to U.S. Zoos Challenged in Federal Court
U.S. FWS Set to Issue Illegal Import Permits over Objections of Leading African Elephant Researchers and Conservationists Washington, DC A coalition of conservation and animal advocacy groups will file suit today in U.S. District Court to invalidate U.S. Fish and Wildlife (FWS) permits authorizing the illegal import of 11 juvenile African elephants taken from the wild in Swaziland to be put on display at the San Diego Zoo and the Lowry Park Zoo of Tampa. On July 9, the FWS issued a "record of decision" indicating it will issue the permits on Friday, July 11. The conservation coalition which includes the Born Free Foundation, Born Free USA, The Elephant Alliance, the Elephant Sanctuary, In Defense of Animals, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Animal Protection Institute, Animal Welfare Institute, Animal Legal Defense Fund and San Diego Animal Advocates maintains that the permits violate the U.S. Endangered Species Act, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), and the National Environmental Policy Act.

When Zoos Tell Lies
By Barry Kent MacKay When you walk into the Sacramento Zoo, about the first thing you encounter is a wide expanse of water, surrounded by vegetation, with an island in the middle. A low fence is all that separates you from the birds therein. Being a fanatic about birds, I find myself drawn to this miniature lake during my zoo visits. As a wildlife artist I benefit from close up looks at these exotic birds. But that does not justify their incarceration. Zoos on the Defensive As the animal rights movement grows in public support, zoos find themselves increasingly on the defensive. Even if you do not oppose the concept of zoos, if you have a gram of compassion you most certainly will have felt uncomfortable about at least some forms of animal imprisonment seen in some zoos. Zoos argue that they serve many different functions that are of value, if not to the individual animals, at least to the species. Indeed, in places where some form of peer accreditation seeks to provide at least minimum standards, it is not supposed to be enough merely to have animals on display, merely to entertain. So what is the purpose of that lake that greets the visitor just past the gate of the Sacramento Zoo?

Uday Hussein's Lions May Be Freed in African Wilds Leon Marshall in Johannesburg
for National Geographic News
June 4, 2003 War-traumatized lions which Sadam Hussein's son Uday kept in a private zoo in one of the family's Baghdad palaces could soon be roaming free in the South African bush. The animals, along with a blind bear and two cheetahs, were neglected and living in terrible conditions when U.S. troops found them towards the end of the Iraq war. The soldiers using the palace as a base took care of them and, according to reports, were delighted on a day towards the end of April to find the lioness had given birth to six cubs. Once in South Africa, an intensive program is planned to get them accustomed to life in the wild and to fend for themselves. Wildlife experts are hopeful that their natural instincts will prevail and that they will join with other lions to form prides. The project to bring them to South Africa was initiated by Louise Joubert, founder of SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary, an organization based in the country's northern Limpopo Province near the Kruger National Park, which cares for and rehabilitates into the wild animals that have been orphaned, injured, or held in captivity.

On this page you will find a brief description of each of the 17 species of penguin. If you click on the species name you will be sent to a page with detailed notes on that species. Photos of all species may be found by visiting our photo index page. The common names of 17 species are: Emperor, King, Gentoo, Adelie, Chinstrap, Yellow-eyed, Macaroni, Royal, Erected-crested, Snares, Fiordland, Rockhopper, Magellanic, Humboldt, African, Galapagos and Little.
Emperor penguin - Aptenodytes forsteri
Emperor penguins are one of the two species that are strictly Antarctic. Emperors are the only birds that never set foot on dry land. Emperor rookeries are found on the Antarctic ice shelves, the male penguins incubate the eggs on their feet during the Antarctic winter. Emperor penguins are rarely held in captivity, they can only be seen in Antarctica, or in the Penguin Encounter at the Sea World park in San Diego.
King penguin - Aptenodytes patagonicus
King penguins are found on sub-Antarctic islands all around the Southern Ocean. King penguins are kept in many Zoos around the world. Perhaps the most famous collection is in Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. The penguins there take a stroll around the Zoo every day!
