African Violets
African violets are among the easiest to grow and most rewarding of all indoor plants. Most houseplants with showy blossoms have very high light requirements; others will bloom only after you cover them every night for many weeks. African violets bloom off and on year round...particularly the newer varieties...with very little effort on your part. Choose a bright location for your African violets. An east, west, or even south-facing window is fine during the shorter days of fall and winter. In summer, the light from a west or south-facing window will probably be too intense, and it will be too hot, as well. During those longer days of spring and summer, keep your African violets in a north or east window. You could also reduce the light and heat in brighter windows with the use of sheer curtains. If you don't have enough space by your windows, African violets can perform equally well under fluorescent lights. Regardless of their location, keep your African violets' soil slightly moist at all times. Water thoroughly whenever the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Then discard whatever excess water collects in the saucer or tray beneath the plants. Otherwise the water wicks back into the soil, keeping it soggy and setting the stage for root rot. Fertilize your African violets regularly, using an extremely dilute houseplant fertilizer with each watering. Or you may apply one that's mixed half-strength, once a month.

In the picture is an award winner from a recent local Fort Lauderdale show. African Violets require warm conditions, a minimum of 60 degrees, prefer a humid home, bright but sun-shaded conditions, fertile and perfectly drained organic soil. There is no truth to the rumor that leaves should not get wet. Cleaning leaves with water is a good practice but ongoing, clinging moisture is not desired. Leaf washing also keeps away pests like spider mites A well drained soil is critical and light routine feeding with an African Violet food is a must. Find a location with bright light. Less light is OK, but you will miss many potential blooms. There are so many varieties and hybrids, a collector could spend a lifetime gathering his plants. Here are some more well-bred plants:

African Violets
African Violet Trading Etiquette
The best way to get into trading African violets is by joining a local club. Clubs offer you the opportunity to participate in shows, attend social meetings and get-togethers and meet great people. However, joining a club is not always an option for everyone so the practice of trading African violets by mail has developed. What you will find here is a collection of suggestions (not rules), as to what is considered common trading etiquette, handed down from the experienced trader to the newbie. Following the forums, I found myself and many others wondering, "What's the procedure for making trades?". Hopefully African violet enthusiasts will find these hints and tips useful in guiding their trades and getting packages ready for shipping. Communication: The most important part of a trade is good communication between trade partners. Be totally upfront when planning your trade. Be specific about your varieties and whether you are sending leaves or plants. Details, details, details. If you have all the details, there should never be a bad trade. Trades are not always plant for plant, leaf for leaf, they can be completed in a number of ways. An African violet for a strep or other type of plant or the exchange may simply be repaying the person for their postage if you have nothing to trade. Perhaps you're in an area where you can purchase an item that someone else can't get and exchange it with them for plants. For example, I hear AVers talking about getting AV pots or plants at Lowes all the time. This is something I can't do since Minnesota has no Lowes stores.

Provides the drainage and thus the air necessary for active root growth. Sparse flowering and slow growth can often be traced to a poorly drained soil. The sphagnum peat moss in this mix serves as a reservoir for both water and nutrients. The vermiculite helps resist compaction and will keep the soil loose and well aerated. About us Contact us Members Links ... Garden Directory
"Roses grow best on heavy clay soils with lots of organic matter helping to keep the surface roots moist and wet!" Container Gardens Propagation Looking After African Violets Propagating african violets by leaf stem cuttings. African violets are one of the easiest house plants to propogate. They are best propagated by removing mature leaves from the mother plant in the form of leaf stem cuttings. (see photo left ) To take the cuttings follow the following stages-
  • Water the mother plant and leave for 30 mins to make sure the plant is not water stressed when the cutings are taken. Remove the leaves to form the basic cutting as shown in the photo. select mature leaves which tend to be on the outer edge of the mother plant. Try to take the cutting so it has the maximium stem lengh.
Cutting compost needs to be well drained but at the same time needs to hold moisture to encourage rooting. At GardenAdvice we normally mix 50% peat poting compost with 50% vermiculate to create the rooting compost Insert several leaves into a 3 to 4 inch pot.

Professional gardener Mike Hibbard, who shares great advice on caring for African violets. He also explains how to start a new plant from a leaf cutting.
    Figure A
    Figure B
    • When watering African violets, try to avoid watering over the leaves (figure A) . This will cause spots on the leaves. Also, be sure never to water through the crown of the plant too much because moisture on the crown will cause rotting.
    • One way to water an African violet is to use the water-wicking method, which involves the use of a wick such as from a candle, or even a piece of cord or yarn. Gently take the violet out of the pot, and place one in of the cord in the bottom of the pot. Replace the violet and run the other end of the cord into a bowl of water placed next to the violet (figure B) . This way the violet draws the correct amount of water itself.
    Figure C Figure D
    • If you prefer watering from the top, and you spill water on the foliage, use a facial tissue to blot up excess water and prevent any burning.

    Growing African Violets
The Inside Dirt : Episode ISD-123

African violets can sometimes seem as temperamental as they are beautiful. They may stop blooming; the foliage may appear limpid. African violet expert Bev Promersberger joins host Michele Driscoll Alioto to discuss the rewards and challenges of growing these beautiful indoor plants. Here are some of Promersberger's tips: In general, African violets don't like wet feet. You may water them from the top, but don't allow the plant to sit in draining water for too long. African violets also don't like chlorine, salt or cold water. Fill a watering can and let it sit overnight so that the chlorine evaporates and the water reaches room temperature. Promersberger suggests this method for watering: Gently tip the violet over the sink and spray the plant thoroughly with a mister (violets love humidity). Tipping the plant allows excess water to drain off. Use a paper towel or tissue to wipe away excess water on the leaves. Make sure the plant is completely dry before returning it to its sunny spot. Some specially made violet pots include a wicking system for easy watering.
