ABSTRACT
The pinwheel flowering African violets are periclinal chimeras. Plantlets produced from tissue cultured leaf explants do not flower true-to-type. When intact inflorescences were cultured in vitro, plantlets arose in the axils of small bracts on the peduncles. These plantlets flowered between 80% and 95% true-to-type depending on the cultivar under consideration. It is hypothesized that these plantlets result from the growth of dormant axillary buds in the inflorescence. This hypothesis would account for the ability to propagate the periclinal chimeras in a true-to-type fashion since the apical organization of axillary buds is identical to that of the apical meristem.
INTRODUCTION
African violets which have bicolor flowers with a banded arrangement of the colors are termed "pinwheel flowering". The lateral edge of each corolla segment is a different color than the central portion, giving the whole flower a "spoked" appearance, with the "spokes" being one color and the "spaces between the spokes" a different color. Figure 1. The pinwheel-flowering African violet cultivar 'Valencia' is characterized by corolla segments with methyl violet margins and a white center stripe.

Plant Care Instructions
Summary
Light: Moderate to bright, indirect, indoor light. Watering: Keep soil moist to dry, and allow soil around roots to dry out before watering to encourage blooming. Water from the bottom with room temperature water by placing the plastic grower's pot in water, and allowing the plant to absorb the water ( not more than 30 minutes ). Avoid getting water on the leaves as this can cause spotting damage. For best results, use violet plant food as directed. Tips: Pinch off spent blossoms and blossom stems to encourage develpment of new blooms. Place plants away from floor vents, fans, or entrance doors to avoid air drafts and bursts of cold air.
Contents Water In general, African Violets need just enough water to keep the soil moist, but never soggy. Too much water will leave your African Violets susceptible to such deadly pathogens as Pythium, Root Rot and Crown Rot. Overwatering can also cause denitrification, a condition which prevents plants from getting the nitrogen they need.

Recent Update: Dear Friends, Thank you for your continuing support. We are now beginning out tenth season of offering you distinctive varieties of African Violets, Gesneriads, Geraniums and exotic flowering tropical plants. If you have not ordered from us before, I invite you to experience the pleasure of receiving and growing our strong, healthy plants. We send well-established starter plants in 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" pots. African violet leaves are fresh-cut just prior to shipping. Every plant and leaf is expertly wrapped and packed in well-insulated boxes. We have received innumerable compliments on not only our plants and leaves, but on the quality of our shipping methods. We generally begin our shipping season in mid April, weather permitting, and continue through October. During the winter months we will ship if a suitable weather window makes it possible to safely ship plants. As we receive orders year round, some delays may be expected at the beginning of the shipping season. Orders are processed in the sequence that we receive them. We ship only on Mondays and Tuesdays, so that your plants and/or leaves will arrive before the weekend. I will notify you a few days before shipping to let you know when to expect your order to arrive.

African Violets
Jones, H. C. The African violet ( Saintpaulia ) is an excellent flowering house plant which will grow and flower under low light intensities found in the average home. Where there is insufficient natural light, they can be grown and flowered successfully entirely under artificial light. Large numbers of different varieties, types and colors available, and the ease with which they can be propagated make this an excellent plant for interior decoration of the home. African violets require about 1000 foot-candles of light for 8 to 12 hours per day for best growth and flowering. However, lower light levels for longer periods of time are also satisfactory. Often, it is possible to tell from their appearance whether light levels are satisfactory. If light is too low, leaves are usually deeper in color and thinner than leaves on plants receiving higher levels of diffused light. Unless light is extremely low, plants may grow well but will flower poorly or not at all. In such instances, supplemental artificial light is helpful in promoting flowering. Excessive light levels cause leaves to be pale or yellowish green, much lighter than normal and some leaves may show dark areas where they have been shaded by other leaves. Growth at high light levels is slowed and plants become more compact, however, although flowering may continue freely for a while it will eventually decrease due to chlorophyll destruction.

GROWING AFRICAN VIOLETS Prepared by Paul A. Thomas, Extension Horticulturist-Floriculture Once found only in the coastal woods of east Africa, African violets ( Saintpaulia ionantha) are now among the most popular indoor plants. They are easy to grow and offer a wealth of beautiful flowers. For the indoor gardener with limited space, African violets have an added attraction with sound cultural practices, they can be grown quite successfully on window sills. Proper culture and a desire for house plants are the keys to a well grown African violet like this.
Classification and Varieties African violets are available in a wide range of colors and types. You may choose from several hundred varieties depending upon the flower color, form and plant characteristics you prefer. Flower color varies from blue to violet, lavender, pink, red-violet, blue-violet, lavender-pink and white. Flowers may be single, double, semi-double, star-shaped, fringed or ruffled. Some varieties produce flowers with two or more rows of petals on one color with the rest fringed in a different color. Leaf types are described as plain, quilted, spidered, ruffled, fringed, scalloped, spooned, pointed and variegated.

Started by Jeremy Clark and his life long passion for beautiful blossoms and perfectly-formed plants we strive to bring the joy of violets to you. 2004 brings you brand new offerings of plants, photos, and informative articles. Just in case there's something we missed we've included a link to other sites focused on beautiful flowers and the proper care of them. Take a little time to explore the site, edition 2004. Happy New Year! Happy Violeting!
NEWS:
The Winter here in our part of virginia was particularly bad, and as a result we will not have any Violets to offer until sometime around May. That being said all of our Streptocarpus made it through fine and are in great shape. We are sorry for having to put off the sales of Violets but they will be back!
