81. Francophone Literature: From Negritude To Realism
has been a controversial debate all this time, though without forgetting that we are looking at the most important genre of african literature in the past
http://www.afrol.com/archive/francoph_lit.htm

Francophone Literature
From Negritude to Realism The wave of prices the francophone writers, both African and Caribbean, have been winning the last years, has places their works in the focus of world literature. Renovation is the seemingly most eye-catching they have achieved, these famous authors as Henri Lopès and Sony Labou Tansi (Congo), Ahmadou Kourouma (Ivory Coast), Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant (Martinique) or Maryse Condè (Guadeloupe), to mention just a few. Its a generation which has put aside the authorative influence of the cultural phenomenon known as Negritude , flourishing in the Thirties, and as fundamental as it is controversial in the culture of the francophone part of the continent. Contact us In one of the first studies to connect anglophone literary criticism with African localist tendencies of nativism, Adéeko argues that nativism is a highly productive and intensely generative category in the formation of African literature and criticism. He shows the complexities of nativism (the call for authenticity and identity) both in writing and criticism and proposes that virtually all influential African criticism and writing can be discussed under any combination of three varieties of nativism: classical, structuralist, and linguistic. In the process of arguing that the nativist temperament is not alien to contemporary literary theory and that the theories do not negate the motivating spirit of nativism, Adéeko offers a self-reflexive reading of representative oral and written, national and ethnic African literatures. He suggests a deconstructive reading of Yoruba meta-proverbs and connects the critical arts of such well-known writers as Chinua Achebe ( Arrow of God ), Ayi Kwei Armah (

Some works by women authors and poets are included in this chapter, "African Literature, " but they are covered more fully in "The Voice of Women." I n his Notes on the State of Virginia (Paris, 1784) Thomas Jefferson observed: "Never yet could I find that a black man had uttered a thought above the level of plain narration; never saw even an elementary trait of painting o r sculpture." Responding to this astonishing assertion, Ali A. Mazrui states: "As for Thomas Jefferson's belief that blacks were a people without poetry, black Ethiopians were writing poetry before Jefferson's ancestors in the British Isles were taught the La tin alphabet by the Romans" (see Ali Mazrui's article, "The Development of Modern Literature Since 1935," in Africa Since 1935 [Mazrui 1993], the eighth volume of the

African American Literature
Having its origins in the slave narratives and the folktales transmitted orally during that period, the literature of the African American has been rich and varied. Beginning with the first published work of fiction ( Clotel; Or, the President's Daug hter ) in 1853, continuing under the influence of W.E.B. Du Bois during the first part of this century, and reaching a flowering during the Harlem Renaissance, major contributions have been made to American literature. Today African American writers , such as Toni Morrison, Alex Haley, and Maya Angelou are recognized as among the most significant and popular authors in this country. The following topics are the major divisions in this section dealing with African American literature in general. If you are more interested in a specific genre, go to the bottom of this page. Objections may well be raised about the arrangement of this list. I originally wanted it to be a reading list, but I have since linked the names of several authors to their own pages so that a bit deeper coverage might be possible. These links occur at the first appearance of an author on the list. Some links have already been made in anticipation of individual files to come, and I am working as hard as I can on these and others while teaching a full load. I shall be as grateful for suggestions as I am for your patience. Thanks in advance for both.

  • Introduction
What do we mean by "African children's literature"? A quick definition is "literature written for African children by African authors either in the vernacular or in a foreign language" (Meniru 1992:43). This simple definition failed me as I began researching the biographies of authors whose books I had selected, read, and appreciated as suitable for African children. Some of these books e.g. Who's in Rabbit's House? A Maasai tale retold Why Mosquitoes buzz in peoples ears: A West African tale retold Tales of Temba; and Kyekyekulee, Grandmothers tales) were written by non-African authors. Verna Aardema, Peggy Appiah, and Kathleen Arnott are not Africans, but does the ethnic origin of an author disqualify her books as culturally African? The purpose of this web page is to introduce scholars interested in African children's literature to a variety of material that is available for research in this area. I hope that what I have gathered here will serve as a useful starting point to anyone else interested in studying or doing research in African children's literature.
