CHOOSING AN AFRICAN GREY PARROT
General Information
There are 2 types of African Grey parrots, the Congo African Grey and the smaller duller colored Timneh African Grey, parrot which has a maroon colored tail.
Purchasing an African Grey Parrot
African Greys may be purchased from a pet store or a reputable breeder. When selecting an African Grey, try to choose a young bird as it may be easier to tame and train. Older, wild, colony or parent raised birds may prove difficult to tame. Hand raised babies often make better pets since they have been completely socialized with humans. Young birds are easier to tame and adapt readily to new environments and situations. Your new bird should be exposed early to different events (young and old people, males and females, other pets, car trips, visits to the veterinarian, etc.) to help promote a calm, well-adjusted pet. The lively, alert bird that is not easily frightened is more likely a healthy bird. After purchasing your new bird, have it examined by your veterinarian.
Veterinary Care
African Greys require regular, routine veterinary health check-ups. Your veterinarian can perform a physical examination, grooming (beak, nail or feather trim ) and laboratory tests as needed. During these semi-annual check-ups, health, nutritional and maintenance issues can be identified and addressed. Veterinary check-ups help prevent disease and will aid in the maintenance of a long lasting, healthy relationship between you and your bird.

104. FEEDING AN AFRICAN GREY PARROT
What does my african Grey Parrot naturally eat? african Grey parrots eat a variety of seeds, nuts, fruits, berries and vegetation in the wild.
http://www.pethealthcare.net/html/body_feeding_an_african_grey_parrot.html
FEEDING AN AFRICAN GREY PARROT
General Information
There is a lot of information available about diets for pet birds and as time goes on, our knowledge continues to improve. This is due to heightened awareness of the importance of nutrition plus increased research involving pets and wild birds. As with all other animals, birds need a proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Different species of birds often require different foods.
Should I be concerned about what my African Grey eats?
Nutrition is the most commonly neglected element of owning a pet bird. Too often owners assume they are feeding a proper diet to their African Grey when in fact they are not. It is a common source of many health problems. It is important to continually strive to improve your bird's diet. This will involve reading, carefully interpreting and integrating the information along with a certain degree of common sense. Above all, discuss nutrition with your veterinarian!
It is not good enough to feed an African Grey just to keep it alive; instead, your goal should be to help it thrive and flourish. Your bird's entire health will depend on how well it is fed.

is BellaOnline's Birds Host African Grey Parrots There are two types of African Grey Parrots – the Congo (CAG) and the Timneh (TAG). One difference in these birds is in appearance as the CAG has a black beak and a bright red tail and the TAG has a bone-coloured beak and a very dark maroon tail. The CAG is also slightly larger than the TAG. Both species come in varying shades of grey as their name implies. A Timneh may be more outgoing than a Congo, although there are some Congos who don’t seem to know about this.
African Grey Parrots are very intelligent birds as shown by the studies done by Dr. Irene Pepperberg at The Alex Foundation Not all African Grey Parrots will talk – but most will. Their first words are often mumbled at only a few months of age and many will begin talking clearly at about one year old. Not only do they speak clearly, but also they use the same tone of voice as the person who has said that word or phrase to them. Once they start talking, they pick up almost everything (if they want to) and some of the things they may say are things that they heard many months ago and remembered. One of the first things that my CAG, Jewel said was “tickle toes” and I had never said that to her. Upon checking with her breeder, I found out that he and his wife had said it often as they played with her feet so she wouldn’t be nervous about having her nails done. She hadn’t heard it since coming to my home, but 4 months later, she said it while I was trimming her toenails.

Temperament The African Grey is extremely intelligent, perhaps topping all other parrots in it's ability to learn new things throughout a lifetime. Adult greys are considered shy and introverted, and usually bond with only one person, being aloof with everyone else. They are also one of the most rigid and pattern oriented of all parrots, being keenly observant and sensitive to the slightest change in routine. Hello. On January 6 th 2001 Emily's page mysteriously disappeared so we are in the unfortunate position of redoing her page fully. Much of her page has been on here since 1996 and it is hard to remember exactly what was here! I am adding as I remember and making some changes.
So please bear with us and come back often! I am afraid the greatest casualty is the list of what she says. She says about 350 - 400 words and phrases. Several things are apparently different words to her, although they are the same to us.
'Oh' can be said in understanding , in suprise, in disgust etc.
She also changes the order of words and adds or drops some words. She might say- Peanut? I want peanut- You want peanut? Want peanut! I am peanut and I LOVE peanut.
She came to us as a gift at Christmas time in 1990 when she was about 8 months old. Her eyes were still dark and changed colors to a straw yellow over the next few months. She used to sleep wrapped up in a blankie in a basket on top of her room when she was a baby. She still likes to snuggle in a blankie but gets too hot after awhile and comes out. Her wings had been quite badly mangled and did not grow in for several years. I did not realize that they had finally grown in until the day she let herself out, caught a breeze and flew in circles around the house for three days until she figured out how to land low enough for me to climb up to her. Poor little thing was SO happy to see me- and I her !

Togo's Bulletin Board Petition to bring Togo home I’m a Canadian Parrot lover and I can’t believe the stupidity and intransigence of our public servants. I am horrified to think of someone grabbing one of my parrots and tossing them into some closet or truck just because he thinks that that badge is a license to do whatever he wants. Of course domestically bred animals are not endangered! I think I would be tempted to lock myself in my car and tell them that they’d just have to shoot me, ‘cause they weren’t taking my bird!!! All because some pinhead didn’t see the right kind of form… by all means, please, sue the pants off whichever of my countrymen did this. They deserve it. I’m going to call the offices listed here, and print this story in our newsletter as a warning to our membership. I hope and pray there won’t be any lasting damage to Togo caused by this event. Ken Noesgaard President Saskatoon Pet Bird Society 2 of our members have taken this as a cautionary tale. They are moving to Louisiana and have taken care to jump through all the hoops possible. They have all their permits and have had to have their birds vetted here, then they have to arrange to meet a wildlife inspector at a specific border crossing at a specific time and there a veterinarian will examine the birds again at the border. They have to pay for the time of both of these people (I wonder what our taxes pay for…). Any way, hopefully they will be spared your troubles.
