True or not, Greys are referred to as the most intelligent, the best speakers, the most neurotic and among the shyest of companion parrot species. They routinely demonstrate perceptual (problem solving and reasoning) abilities. They out talk many other parrot species. Many also bite, pluck their feathers and show a definite preference for only one human. Let’s take a look at African Grey truths and myths - First, it’s important to know that there are two sub-species of African Grey the nominate sub-species, commonly called Congo African Grey and the lesser known Timneh sub-species. Both are from Africa, with Timneh found in a smaller area, including Liberia and the Ivory Coast region. Congo Greys are larger, lighter colored and have a bright red tail. Timnehs fall into the 275-350 gram range and are a darker grey with maroon colored tail. While not enough Timnehs have been bred domestically to say with certainty, many breeders claim there is a definite personality difference between Congo and Timneh Greys. Timnehs are said to be less shy and potentially neurotic as Congos. TALKING ABILITY All African Greys have the potential to speak and imitate, not only human, but all manner of sounds and whistles. However, not all Greys speak well or at all. Some birds that are ignored in their cages imitate sounds and language very well. Others that are handled and allowed out of their cages on a regular basis may not speak. There’s no way to say who will talk and who won’t. However, most Greys do talk, starting after their first year of age.

Birds can fly into windows, doors, ceiling fans, hot cooking foods and any number of places in the home where they can injure themselves. Wing clipping is also a protection against birds escaping into the out-of-doors. Once outside, an indoor flightless bird can easily take flight with the help of a gust of wind. Unfortunately, escaped birds have little chance of survival outdoors. They face death from a predator or starvation, while at home their owners grieve for their lost pet. When clipping a bird's wings, it is VERY IMPORTANT that the clip be done properly and that the first wing clip is done only after a baby bird has learned to fly with precision and control. THE FIRST CLIP An agile, confident, sure-footed Grey is the product of being allowed to fledge. Allowing a baby bird to learn to fly enables him to develop coordination and control. To achieve the first short-term goal, I am constructing an ethogram using videotapes of African Grey Parrot behavior; the ethogram will allow me to judge the feasibility of its use for long-term study in three ways. First, I will identify the amount and types of behavioral data that were collected. Second, I will create definitions of and guidelines for assigning behavioral elements that will provide the ethogram's underlying structure. Third, when the underlying structure is complete, I will test the ethogram's utility and inter-observer reliability. Achieving the second short-term goal will require some understanding of the natural history of African Grey Parrots. Knowledge of daily activities (e.g., where and when the parrots forage for food) and possible effects of human presence on African Grey Parrot behavior are important for the design and implementation of conservation practices. Our first parrot, "Turkey" (a double-yellow-head Amazon) has been a member of our family for over 20 years since he was a hand-reared chick. We didn't know much about parrots in those days, and did not hand-raise him ourselves. I've taken care of him most of the time, so he has bonded mostly to me. Today, he will not allow anyone else to touch him, although he will take food gently from Norm's hand. When my mom visits, she delights in his antics and always asks how he is when we talk on the 'phone. He interacts and talks to everyone that comes through our doors and tolerates them right up to his cage. But, do not insert a finger unless you are in the market for a major manicure - to the bone! Most of this behavior has to do with our lack of knowledge about early socialization. This is Einstein who is a brilliant talker. Einstein, my young African Grey, sits on my shoulder as I type this article, and is a wonderful and true companion. I love the feel and smell of his warm little body and the sound of his mutterings. I have great hopes for his future. Maybe he can take over the keeping the checkbook straight on the ranch. He doesn't know how to write a check, but has already become adept at making deposits, mostly on my shoulder. Thinking positive about his mental capabilities I named him Einstein, and he is beginning to show me that he is a very inquisitive and intelligent bird with great learning potential.

Timneh more commonly called Timneh African Grey. Given the appropriate nutritional requirements in a nurturing home, African Grey's can have a lifespan of 50-70 years. The Congo African Grey Parrot is a medium grey bird with shades of light grey on the body. The feathers on the head have brushed white edging. The eye area is of bare white skin. A solid black beak and bright red tail are the finishing touches to this magnificent parrot. Young CAG's have dark grey tips on their tail feathers. They are also known as the "Red Tailed Grey". They vary in size from 12-14" from beak to tail, also can vary in weight between 400-650 grams depending on the frame of the individual bird. Greys from Nigeria usually have dark grey wings. CAG's from the Congo region are, on average, larger in size. On occasion you might see a Grey with red feathering throughout the body, they are known as "Red Factor Greys". The Timneh African Grey Parrot is a dark grey bird with shades of light grey on the body. The eye area is of bare white skin. They have a "bone" colored upper mandible and a dark maroon tail.
