Plumage Colouration: Juveniles tend toward a darker tail color to that of the adult at least untill 6months old, Juvenile eye color black untill aprox 18 weeks thereafter turning to light grey outer ring, eyes turn a pale yellow at 12 months, to a brighter yellow as the bird get older.
General plumage pale grey, but occasionally dark grey; white, bare facial area; head feathers with pale edging; abdomen feathers with dark grey edging; lower back light grey; primaries grey-blackish; tail and adjacent tail-coverts red; bill black; iris pale yellow; feet dark grey. Sexing: Some say they can sex a bird by the shape of a greys head or the overall look of the bird, I find this doubtful, and would recommend a DNA test where two blood feathers are removed from the chest area and sent for analysis, ensuring a positive resul in the sex be it female or male bird. Feeding: The diet depends very much on the bird; if the bird is a wild import our fresh foods maybe alien therefore its harder to adjust the bird into eating a health diet, I would suggest a fortified vitamin supplemented seed in this case as the bird may tend toward being a seed junkie, hand reared birds take more readily to fresh fruit and vegetables, pellets specially produced for specific birds, also egg-rearing food.

During the 1940's and 1950's, for example, laboratory researchers in Europe demonstrated that Grey parrots could learn the kinds of symbolic and conceptual tasks that are generally considered as pre- or co-requisites for complex cognitive and communicative skills (reviews in Pepperberg1,2). More recently, field studies have reported behaviors that, when observed in nonhuman primates, are considered as evidence for human-like intelligence. Such behaviors include cooperative alarm signaling ("sentinel behavior") in flocks of Indigo macaws (

85. You And Your African Grey, By Jane Hallander
There is no question that african greys are among the most intelligent parrot species. Like any other parrot, african greys bite for many different reasons.

YOU AND YOUR AFRICAN GREY
By Jane Hallander
African Greys have a hefty reputation, often causing people to place a lot expectation on their eventual performance. True or not, Greys are referred to as the most intelligent, the best speakers, the most neurotic and among the shyest of companion parrot species. They routinely demonstrate perceptual (problem solving and reasoning) abilities. They out talk many other parrot species. Many also bite, pluck their feathers and show a definite preference for only one human.
Let’s take a look at African Grey truths and myths -
First, it’s important to know that there are two sub-species of African Grey the nominate sub-species, commonly called Congo African Grey and the lesser known Timneh sub-species. Both are from Africa, with Timneh found in a smaller area, including Liberia and the Ivory Coast region. Congo Greys are larger, lighter colored and have a bright red tail. Timnehs fall into the 275-350 gram range and are a darker grey with maroon colored tail. While not enough Timnehs have been bred domestically to say with certainty, many breeders claim there is a definite personality difference between Congo and Timneh Greys. Timnehs are said to be less shy and potentially neurotic as Congos.
TALKING ABILITY
All African Greys have the potential to speak and imitate, not only human, but all manner of sounds and whistles. However, not all Greys speak well or at all. Some birds that are ignored in their cages imitate sounds and language very well. Others that are handled and allowed out of their cages on a regular basis may not speak. There’s no way to say who will talk and who won’t. However, most Greys do talk, starting after their first year of age.

    WINGCLIPPING AND THE AFRICAN GREY
    by Bobbi Brinker
Clipping a bird's wings is done mainly for their own safety. Birds can fly into windows, doors, ceiling fans, hot cooking foods and any number of places in the home where they can injure themselves. Wing clipping is also a protection against birds escaping into the out-of-doors. Once outside, an indoor flightless bird can easily take flight with the help of a gust of wind. Unfortunately, escaped birds have little chance of survival outdoors. They face death from a predator or starvation, while at home their owners grieve for their lost pet. When clipping a bird's wings, it is VERY IMPORTANT that the clip be done properly and that the first wing clip is done only after a baby bird has learned to fly with precision and control. THE FIRST CLIP
An agile, confident, sure-footed Grey is the product of being allowed to fledge. Allowing a baby bird to learn to fly enables him to develop coordination and control. He learns to land where he intends to land, learns how to flutter to the floor safely and learns how to control his body. After he is clipped, this knowledge and confidence stays with him. A bird who knows how to control his body is much less likely to be injured.

Diana L. May Department of Psychology, Psychobiology Program University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 USA Excerpted from the Proceedings of the International Aviculturists Society, January 1996, Orlando, FL Introduction And Background Although such laboratory research has provided a wealth of evidence for captive Project Description Goals My study has two short-term goals: to assess the feasibility of a long-term field study of African Grey Parrot behavior and to collect preliminary information necessary for the design and implementation of ecotourism as a conservation strategy for African Grey Parrots. To achieve the first short-term goal, I am constructing an ethogram using videotapes of African Grey Parrot behavior; the ethogram will allow me to judge the feasibility of its use for long-term study in three ways. First, I will identify the amount and types of behavioral data that were collected. Second, I will create definitions of and guidelines for assigning behavioral elements that will provide the ethogram's underlying structure. Third, when the underlying structure is complete, I will test the ethogram's utility and inter-observer reliability. Achieving the second short-term goal will require some understanding of the natural history of African Grey Parrots. Knowledge of daily activities (e.g., where and when the parrots forage for food) and possible effects of human presence on African Grey Parrot behavior are important for the design and implementation of conservation practices. During my study, I collected some of this information in the form of written field notes and videotape; further anaylsis for the ethogram will provide even more information.

Good basic info.
As a new parrot owner and novice African Grey mom, I was looking for a book to give me an overview. This book does the trick. It goes over basic African Grey characteristics, grooming, housing, etc. If you're new to Greys, I strongly recommend this as a beginner book.
Read before buying a Grey
I was set on buying an African Grey so I purchased this book in advance. It has wonderful specific information on Greys. I haven't read any other books specifically written about Greys, but this book convinced me that a Grey was not for me. It helped me to realize that this type of parrot was too much for me to handle. Great book to read prior to buying a African Grey for the first time...or for the new owner.

Visual Sexing African Greys
Most African parrots can be easily sexed after they have molted once. While it is not advisable to determine the sex visually for breeder pairs, identifying the sex of a pet for an owner (without DNA sexing or surgical sexing) will make owners happy. African grey parrots ( Psittacus erithacus erithacus ) are usually easy to sex. Males have a solid red tail on the underside (the secondary retrices), while those of the hen are tipped in silver. While examining proven pairs, this has proven to be accurate in over 95% of the pairs. Also, with male greys, the underside of the wings is very dark, while those of the hen are lighter grey. This only holds true for the nominate species, and not for the Timneh grey ( P. e. timneh Males Females Close Ups: Close Ups:

A Talk with Irene Pepperberg What the data suggest to me is that if one starts with a brain of a certain complexity and gives it enough social and ecological support, that brain will develop at least the building blocks of a complex communication system. Of course, chimpanzees don't proceed to develop full-blown language the way you and I have. Grey parrots, such as Alex and Griffin, are never going to sit here and give an interview the way you and I are conducting an interview and having a chat. But they are going to produce meaningful, complex communicative combinations. It is incredibly fascinating to have creatures so evolutionarily separate from humans performing simple forms of the same types of complex cognitive tasks as do young children.

Choosing and Raising a Baby African Grey Parrot
"Come-on In!", is the greeting you will get if you knock on our front door. Our first parrot, "Turkey" (a double-yellow-head Amazon) has been a member of our family for over 20 years since he was a hand-reared chick. We didn't know much about parrots in those days, and did not hand-raise him ourselves. I've taken care of him most of the time, so he has bonded mostly to me. Today, he will not allow anyone else to touch him, although he will take food gently from Norm's hand. When my mom visits, she delights in his antics and always asks how he is when we talk on the 'phone. He interacts and talks to everyone that comes through our doors and tolerates them right up to his cage. But, do not insert a finger unless you are in the market for a major manicure - to the bone! Most of this behavior has to do with our lack of knowledge about early socialization.
This is Einstein who is a brilliant talker.
Einstein, my young African Grey, sits on my shoulder as I type this article, and is a wonderful and true companion. I love the feel and smell of his warm little body and the sound of his mutterings. I have great hopes for his future. Maybe he can take over the keeping the checkbook straight on the ranch. He doesn't know how to write a check, but has already become adept at making deposits, mostly on my shoulder. Thinking positive about his mental capabilities I named him Einstein, and he is beginning to show me that he is a very inquisitive and intelligent bird with great learning potential.

by Monica Gonzalez The African Grey Parrot comes from a broad area of Central Africa. P.e. Erithacus being the nominate race, the Congo African Grey. P.e. Timneh more commonly called Timneh African Grey. Given the appropriate nutritional requirements in a nurturing home, African Grey's can have a lifespan of 50-70 years. The Congo African Grey Parrot is a medium grey bird with shades of light grey on the body. The feathers on the head have brushed white edging. The eye area is of bare white skin. A solid black beak and bright red tail are the finishing touches to this magnificent parrot. Young CAG's have dark grey tips on their tail feathers. They are also known as the "Red Tailed Grey". They vary in size from 12-14" from beak to tail, also can vary in weight between 400-650 grams depending on the frame of the individual bird. Greys from Nigeria usually have dark grey wings. CAG's from the Congo region are, on average, larger in size. On occasion you might see a Grey with red feathering throughout the body, they are known as "Red Factor Greys". The Timneh African Grey Parrot is a dark grey bird with shades of light grey on the body. The eye area is of bare white skin. They have a "bone" colored upper mandible and a dark maroon tail. The Timneh is smaller in size ranging from 9-11 inches beak to tail. Also TAG's can vary in weight from 275-400 grams.

African grey parrots: The African Grey Parrot, Psittacus erithacus , is the largest parrot found in Africa. Wild greys range throughout Central and Western Africa, and can be found in western sections of East African countries. They live in primary and secondary rainforest, forest edges and clearings. There are two types of African grey parrots; some authorities consider them different "races", others consider them sub-species, while still others classify them as different species. The Congo, P. e. erithacus , is the larger of the two birds, with bright red tail feathers and a black beak. Congos are generally characterized as slightly more intelligent, but also more high-strung than Timnehs. The Timneh, P. e. timneh , is smaller, its tail feathers are more of a maroon-grey mixture, and its beak includes tints of a reddish-beige color. These birds are characteristically less high-strung and more mellow than Congos. Some evidence indicates there may be a third sub-species

by Irene Maxine Pepperberg
When Irene Pepperberg, a professor at the University of Arizona, says goodnight, she typically hears the reply "Bye. I'm gonna go eat dinner. I'll see you tomorrow." Though the response itself is not unusual, the source is, for it comes from Alex, a gray parrot, Pepperberg's main research subject for the past 22 years. That parrots can talk is well known; what Pepperberg set out to study was their cognitive abilities. By teaching the bird the meaningnot just the soundof words in order to communicate, she hoped to discover how his brain worked. She exhaustively details her fascinating results in The Alex Studies Our Price: $39.95 The African Grey (An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet) by Julie Ann Rach, Julie Dach
