African Grey Parrots are relatively quiet birds, making whistling and other non-offensive sounds.
They usually begin talking at six months of age although some can take up to two years before they say words and sentences.
They are highly intelligent and active birds and need lots of toys and a fairly large cage to play in.
They are also very affectionate birds, needing hugs and kisses and lots of physical contact.
If socialized well as young birds, they will accept all members of a family as part of their flock but can bond to a specific member of the family. Our birds live in purpose built aviaries in ideal conditions. We also spend lots of time playing and socialising with them. You can be sure that any bird from Millennium Parrots will be used to a family environment and will adapt well to your family - assuming that you give them lots of attention, love and play.

Tomi's a Talkin' Bird!!
All the sound files here are in AIFF format. NOTE: To hear these files you'll need audio plug-in such as Beatnik. I've included files sizes even though the majority are very small. There are a few rather large files but they are worth listening to. I was amazed to get recordings of Tomi speaking as he's not the most cooperative bird when it comes to talking. For the longest time, noone believed me that he could talk at all! Most of these recordings were done over a couple days. I was very lucky. I hope you get a kick out of hearing Tomi's vocalizations. AND, if anyone ever asks you, here's proof that Timneh African Greys can talk just as well as Congos. (I guess it's mistakenly thought that Timnehs don't speak as well as the Congos. I don't know very many Greys but I think Tomi does pretty well. *wink*) ENJOY!

What to Expect from Your African Grey
Is Your African Grey a Male or a Female?
In most African Greys, it is difficult to distinguish a male from a female based on physical characteristics; therefore, endoscopy or laboratory methods must be used for sex determination in breeding facilities. There may be some size or color variation between genders if the birds are from the same subspecies.
What Do Greys Do All Day?
Because of their high intelligence, African Greys are easily bored and require training. They are relatively playful and can be amused with some toys. Because they love to chew, any toys must be free of toxic metals, hooks, sharp objects or small, easily consumed components. Providing chew toys or fresh-cut branches from nontoxic, pesticide-free trees is encouraged for African Greys. Check with your veterinarian for recommendations on locally available safe trees.

African Grey Fledging:
Encouraging Flight Rita Shimniok
Often discussed in the raising of captive bred African Greys is the need for proper socialization and nurturing in order to help the baby become the best pet Grey possible. Baby Greys should be exposed to a variety of foods during weaning, and guidelines should be set for them. A very critical element of the weaning process is fledging. I strongly believe that if an African Grey is not allowed proper fledging time, that it can detrimentally affect their future as a companion parrot. In the early stages of development, African Grey chicks exercise their wings, preparing for the day when they will launch their first attempt at flight. As the babies grow and feather, the wing flapping becomes a larger part of their past time, building strong muscles. Utilizing their wings for balance, attempts are made to climb on top of brooder containers and low perches. As the coordination of the chicks improve, breeders raise the perches in the weaning cage accordingly. Finally the day arrives when the baby Grey is ready to take it's first flight. Often noticed by refusals to consume formula at hand-feeding time, it is instinct for baby parrots to lighten as their body prepares for the final adjustments that precede flight. Soon after, maybe hours - sometimes days - the first flight attempt is made. For many clumsy African Greys, the first flight is haphazardly accomplished - usually short, low and lacking a graceful landing.

Grey Parrots of the Congo Basin Forest (Taken from PsittaScene May 2001) by DIANA L. MAY,
Department of Psychology, University of Arizona It is 06:00 on an April day in the Congo Basin. Elephants move out of a swampy clearing and into a dark wet forest. A flock of 1,000 delicate bright green pigeons suddenly shifts direction in agile synchrony, creating a soft boom. Parrots, grey with bright crimson tails, trickle into the clearing - singles, pairs, triads, quads and they announce their arrival with whistles, squawks and screeches.

All About African Greys Introduction African Grey Parrots, known for their talking ability, were probably kept as pets back in Roman Times where it is known that there were shipments to Rome of parrots from Africa. It is certain that the Grey Parrot was known and traded by 1522 A.D. when a naturalist named Ulysses Aldrovandi mentioned the Grey Parrot in his zoological work. Today, the African Grey Parrot is one of the most popular pet birds. Species There is only one species of African Grey Parrot, Psittacus erithacus erithacus , commonly known as the "Congo" Grey Parrot and one sub-species, Psittacus erithacus timneh , known as the "Timneh" Grey Parrot. There is some debate about a second species known as Psittacus erithacus princeps , often referred to as the "Ghana" Grey Parrot. It is considered by some to be a separate race. It is slightly smaller in length and darker in color. There are other variations in the coloration of African Grey Parrots. There are some birds speckled with red feathers and those with pinkish tones in their grey feathers. There are some nicknamed "Cameroons" which are larger and lighter grey in color.

    Breeding African Greys
    A True Pair

The Congo African Grey parrot is a relatively easy bird to breed and can be quite prolific. The first step in beginning a breeding program with these or any parrot species, is to aquire a true pair. We suggest you verify the sex of your birds before you attempt to set them up for breeding. Today, this is easily done with the aid of "DNA sexing" with minimal stress to your birds. Surgical sexing is prefered by some since it enables the examination of the birds sexual organs and can detect disease in other organs as well. There is some risk involved in this type of sexing as in any surgical procedure. Most domestic raised birds will be mature enough for breeding around five years of age. Wild caught birds seem to take a bit longer, being seven to eight years of age. This is probably due to the less nutrient-rich diet found in the wild as compared to todays handfeeding diets. We begin pairing up our babies at six months of age. This way they get used to being with other birds and learn natural behaviors. Our birds stay sweet and affectionate even after bonding with their mates. I have six and seven year old males who still give me kisses and gently pull my hair as I clean the inside of their cages! Click Picture
This pair has laid 46 eggs in 5 years
Breeding Cage After you are sure you have a true pair of birds, the next step is designing and building a suitable breeding cage. You can also purchase a manufactured cage if you do not want to build one. We breed our pairs in cages with the following dimensions: 4'(w) x 2'(d) x 5'(h). We make our own cages using 1" x 2" wire and galvanized angle iron for the frame. The picture above is an example. African Grey parrots breed quicker and more often in these size cages than in larger flights. This has been discovered by many breeders of these birds. Our birds seem to get plenty of exercise by hanging from the top and flapping their wings.

      Hello:
My grey is 16 months old and up until recently has been the most enjoyable pet. He had a reasonable vocabulary and was very vocal, singing, talking in sentences etc etc. He too was easily handled and would make a special sound to call me to his cage. If I walked out of site, he would call. If I left the room, he would walk up the stairs to find me. Now all this has changed, no talking, biting, growling, no vocalizing, and always an attempt to escape , cowering in the cage, screaming etc. What went wrong here? I am to the point where I am going to give the bird to a local pet shop for consingment sale.

The designs are first drawn on with a pencil by one of the parents. Then it is carefully hand-painted with intricate detail, in stages, by up to 3 artists. Once the paints have dried, the eggs are covered with coats of poly-urethane to prevent smudging and reduce fragility. Although the designs may be similar, each one is different. Each egg comes with its own wood stand painted black..
