Hand reared African Grey Parrots
The African Grey Hand reared African Grey Parrots - a pet for life Hand-reared African Grey Parrots can make wonderful, lively, intelligent pets, but it is important to make sure that they are hand-reared and cuddly-tame. It is always advisable to find Greys that have been hand-reared in small numbers so that they have had a lot of human attention at a very early age - this will ensure that the birds are completely tame and will have a wonderful life in any home they go to. It is very important that all the conditions are correct when these birds are moved from where they are hand-reared to their new environment. Greys can be moved when they are about twelve weeks old as long as they have been completely weaned. Also the correct diet to keep the bird in peak condition, will ensure that you have the right knowledge of how to care for your new pet . I f you are looking for a hand-reared parrot as a pet, remember that this is a major decision and you must make sure that you have all the information, advice and equipment necessary before you decide to take on a bird which could be a loving pet for over thirty years! If you are interested in an African Grey Parrot as a pet, then please contact Rob Harvey who will be glad to recommend breeders.

Congo African Grey
The Congo African Grey is one of the more popular subspecies of the African Grey species. African Greys are highly intelligent parrots that have been found to develop the intelligence level of a 5 year old child and the emotional development of a 3 year old. African Greys have the ability to develop an extensive vocabulary, and most often learn to understand and use the words and phrases that they learn in context. Although, their high level of intelligence causes them to be intriguing, entertaining, and interesting as pets and companions, it can also present a challenge to the unsuspecting or unprepared pet owner. The intelligence of the African Greys may often be used to manipulate their "human pets", so it is recommended that control is maintained and that the intelligence of these parrots is never underestimated. Socializing, affection, and teaching of rules as youngsters is very important to insure well-rounded, friendly, outgoing personalities. Go to Other Pictures Menu

by Sally Blanchard us for permission. Talking Timetable Greys who have shown no indication of talking by the time it is 2 or 3 years old may not become good talkers. However, I do know of many exceptions. These are often birds who are placed in new situations where they receive more stimulation and attention. Please do not misconstrue this to mean that if your grey does not talk, he is unhappy with you. Many of the non-talking greys I have met have been contented parrots. Another misconception I have heard is that parrots will not learn anything new after a certain age. This is absolute nonsense. Bongo Marie, my grey who is at least 25 but may be well over 40, is constantly learning new words, expressions, sounds, and even sentences. The Importance of Interaction Extra Grey Matter?

African Greys
While we certainly try not to neglect the other popular species of companion parrots, the Companion Parrot Quarterly (CPQ) readership has a high percentage of African grey owners - both Congo and Timneh. Because of this since our first issue in 1991, we have published many articles and stories that are specifically about these intelligent birds. Some are in-depth articles discussing the whys and hows of creating a successful relationship with a companion grey while others are just enjoyable stories our readers have to share with other readers. Although these articles contain information specifically about African Greys, many of the behavioral articles in the CPQ would also be helpful to grey owners. See the back issue form for information about ordering. Drawing by Sally Blanchard.

They have an uncanny ability to not only mimic speech, but mimic it in a voice that sounds quite human. They also imitate sounds with incredible accuracy, from dripping faucets to construction equipment. African Grey Parrot
African Grey Parrot Scientific classification Kingdom Animalia Phylum ... Genus Psittacus Species erithacus Binomial name Psittacus erithacus The African Grey Parrot is a large parrot of the genus Psittacus , native to Africa . As the name implies, the African Grey Parrot is predominantly grey, with accents of white and red in varying amounts depending on the subspecies . Greys, like all parrots, are zygodactyl , having 4 toes on each foot - two front and two back. They feed primarily on nuts and fruits, supplemented by leafy matter. Psittaciformes generally are amongst the most intelligent of birds, and African Grey Parrots are particularly noted for their cognitive abilities, which are believed to have evolved as a consequence of their history of cooperative feeding on the ground in central Africa. Irene Pepperberg 's research with captive African Greys including Alex have shown that these parrots are capable of using human words with their human meanings, at least to some extent. This intelligence also creates a need for intellectually stimulating toys when African Greys are kept as companion animals There are two subspecies:
