http://www.parrotsperch.com/
Welcome to My Web Site! I'm Tina Usher, and all of my life I have been captivated by all types of birds. I am a small aviary just outside of Chicago and I have been breeding the large parrots since 1981. I specialize in Congo African Greys, Moluccan, Umbrella and Medium Sulphur Crested (Elenora) Cockatoos and Green Wing Macaws. My home raised, hand-fed babies are well adjusted, gentle and loving. My clients rave about how much larger and more outgoing their parrots are compared to other pet birds they see. I also provide in- your -home grooming and behavioral consultations. Seeing the need, I am currently developing care, training and behavior workshops to help bird owners mend and/or improve their relationships with their avian pals. I'm using my education, training, experience and love for our birds to teach people how to understand and cohabit happily with their pet parrots.

Feather Picking

African greys have a reputation as feather pickers. Parrots, including greys, will sometimes resort to feather picking or worse forms of self mutilation for a variety of physical and physiological reasons, and also if their emotional needs are not being met or they are stressed. It should be noted that any bird that is plucking its feathers

Introduction to African Grey Parrots as Pets
There are two subspecies of African grey parrot commonly found in the pet trade - the Congo African grey (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) and the Timneh African grey (Psittacus erithacus timneh)

CONGO AND TIMNEH AFRICAN GREY, SENEGALS, JARDINE'S PARROTS, RED BELLIED PARROTS, PIONUS, ECLECTUS, GOFFIN'S COCKATOOS AND YELLOW FACED AMAZON BABIES.
Feffie's Feathers is a small, in-home aviary, located in Lansing, Michigan. When we decided to raise parrots, we promised ourselves that our parent birds would live as well as our pets and that we would maintain a pleasant living environment for our human family, as well. Although it took a fair amount of planning, re-arranging, redecorating and rewiring, we have been able to keep that promise.
Our parent birds are housed in an aviary with large, meticulously clean cages, full-spectrum lighting, natural foliage, lots of toys, and rainforest "music". Our babies are raised in a separate nursery, which has it's own kitchen facilities. We have cable television in the nursery. Between feedings, playtimes, and naps, our babies watch the History Channel, CNN, and the Arts and Entertainment Network. By the time they are weaned, most of our African Greys are ready for The High School Quiz Bowl. :-)
Our babies are fully and abundantly weaned to Scenic pellets, fresh sprouts, Goldenfeast mixes and carefully balanced mashes of fresh foods. They are tested for gender, Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, Pacheco's Disease and Psittacosis

http://www.minorkey.com/grey.html
The African Grey Parrot
Mankind - not cats - is the biggest and worst enemy of psittacus erithacus erithacus (Congo) and timneh (Timneh, the lighter-colored beak species) of African Grey parrot. In the very earlier days, natives killed them for food and for their pretty red tail feathers, which were used for headdresses and were considered to have magical properties. In fact, they are STILL for sale, right here on the world wide web! (See the "Deer Spirit Wall Hanger" wall-hanging for sale.) To the credit of the human species, about a century ago, the birds were brought to ports to be sold to the Europeans, who were their first real non-threatening human friends. Parrots, especially African Greys, are featured in many 19th century European portraits, having found favor mostly with the ladies. To this day, and even though they are bred in the US as domesticated pets, it is possible to see rows of wild baby Greys on perches in Ghana, being tamed for subsequent sale. During the days that the sailing ships called at the ports of Western Africa, gathering bounty for sale to Europe, African Greys were stuffed into long narrow cylinders made of reeds, and stowed in the bottom of the ships with no water, and very little food. Most people did not think parrots required water! So most of them died of thirst on the way to their new homelands, and nobody knew why. Even once they reached Europe, veterinarians prescribed NO WATER for the birds in their journals and to the new parrot owners, so the Greys were not given water and eventually died in their new homes, too. They were given dry bread, uncooked corn, and cooked rice - and of course could not survive. Around 1870, some people argued that the birds seemed healthier if they were given water once a day, so some of them (thank goodness) lived.

Each consultation is tailored specifically to meet the client's needs, and is conducted in as thorough a manner as possible. In each case, I attempt not only to target solutions to particular behavior problems, but also provide up-to-date, accurate education regarding species-specific nutrition, caging, social issues and environment. For additional information about my consulting services click here. Grey Matters…New Thoughts on African Grey Parrots by Pamela Clark I saw my first Congo African Grey 27 years ago, and I have never forgotten the experience. I walked into a pet store, made eye contact with this bird, and immediately felt as if he was looking straight into my soul. By the time I was able to afford to have a Grey, and began looking around in my area for a baby, I couldn’t find one that I wanted.

Cockatoos and African Greys: Are they Really So Different? Part 1 of 2 by Sam Foster and Jane Hallander This article is reprinted from The Pet Bird Report , with permission from the author. It sounds as if these are aliens from two different planets, rather than separate classes of the parrot family. However, what if many of the urban myths about cockatoos and greys are just those urban myths? Maybe these parrots who share 'shades of grey' as their primary coloration have much more in common than we think. Let's take a look at some common misconceptions about cockatoos and greys and the possible reasons behind these misconceptions. Of course, there are exceptions, however the average imported grey or cockatoo, who has no health problems, has already withstood incredible trauma from the capturing process alone. Now it's in a cage, with people who may or may not understand its social needs and yet, there are relatively few who pluck their feathers or become phobic. Why is this? And why do we see few cases of feather plucking among South American and some other Australasian parrot species? There are some who are seldom seen, even out of breeding season, in groups of more than a dozen and others who stay primarily in pairs. Could it not therefore be logical to theorize that the impact of hundreds of thousands of years spent by cockatoos in these assorted environments would have a profound impact on their instinctive behavior, even in a captive environment?

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition African Grey Parrot Scientific classification Scientific classification refers to how biologists group and categorize extinct and living species of organisms. Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular systematics, which uses Genomic DNA analysis has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Scientific classification belongs to the science of taxonomy or biological systematics.

Typically, they are multicellular in composition and capable of both locomotion and responding to their surroundings. Unlike plants, animals do not photosynthesize, instead consuming plants or other organisms to grow and sustain themselves. Most animals have a body plan that becomes fixed as they mature and, except in animals that metamorphose, is established early in their development from embryos. The scientific study of animals is called zoology.

GREESON'S BABY PARROTS
Updated:
March 11, 2004
Don and I have been breeding birds since 1980. As you can see, I have been a bird lover for a really long time. This picture was taken in 1953! We work hard to do things right and consider it a labor of love since we enjoy them so much. We started exhibiting at bird shows in 1984..took seven out of ten on the top bench, including Best in Show, at that first show, and don't you know we were hooked.
We took many years to accumulate our breeding stock, selecting only the very best of each species. As a result our babies are of excellent quality. We never breed two birds just to produce more.. the goal is always to improve on their beauty and confirmation. I serve the hobby as an American Cockatiel Society Panel Judge. We breed many species of exotics including African Greys, Conures, Pionus, Cockatoos, Macaws, Quakers, Ringnecks and Amazons. Please check out our baby birds for sale. .you may find we have just the bird you are looking for. This list is updated frequently.
Over the years I have published ten different booklets on birds.
