161. Talking Elephant Records
Unofficial site for the band combining Asian, african and Celtic rhythms and instruments to create unique dance and ambient music. With release information and related links.
http://eccentrix.com/music/elephant/
Talking Elephant Records After much soul-searching, Barry and Malcolm have decided to sell the HTD label to the Sanctuary Group. It was a tough decision made purely for business reasons in what is now a hard market for small independent record companies. However, this has allowed the dynamic duo to open Talking Elephant Records. With about 25 releases planned for the next three months, a new Wishbone Ash studio album and several other exciting new projects. The money from the sale is allowing the boys to bring you new music from the artists they know you love. Barry and Malcolm hope you will support Talking Elephant in the same fantastic way you have supported HTD and its artists to keep great music alive. The following are some of the artist on Talking Elephant Records. The Groundhogs began in 1964, when Tony McPhee and Pete Cruikshank formed "John Lee's Groundhogs" to back John Lee Hooker on a British tour. They released their final blues album, "Blues Obituary", in 1969. After that, they began swimming with the tide of heavy progressive rock and, beginning with 1970's "Thank Christ For The Bomb", they chalked up three Top Ten albums during the early Seventies. Fairport Convention was formed by Ashley Hutchings (Steelye Span) in 1967, and originally featured Richard Thompson. The other founding member was Simon Nichol, and the band took its name from that of Nichol's house. Original vacalist Judy Dyble was replaced in 1968 by Sandy Denny. The band has featured many well-known artists, including Ian Matthews of Matthews Southern Comfort and Dave Pegg of Jethro Tull.

The roots of Zouk music don't date nearly as far back as other Caribbean styles, but this funk-based dance sound has helped put Martinique on the world music map and has added another layer to this country's already thick skin of culture. Zouk, a Creole word that at one time was slang for party, came to the fore in the 1980s, with its basis in cadence music. Cadence was a French Antillean pop music sound largely heard at these "zouks" before the groundbreaking group Kassav, featuring self-professed zouk music founder Jacob Desvarieux, set Martinique and its French Antilles neighbor Guadeloupe on another musical course. Zouk, which along with cadence is related to biguine, merengue, danzon, and guaguanco Caribbean musical styles, features both traditional and high-tech musical instruments. Usually zouk bands include guitar, bass, a brass section, two synthesizers, and a rhythm section with a conga, tumba, gourd shaker, and conventional drum set. The beat of a conga or a drum, for instance, may be manipulated electronically to create an entirely new sound. The instruments interlock rather than overlap, creating more space and a lighter sound than musical styles where the whole band plays at once. Lyrics, mostly sung in Creole, are often equally joyful, centering on celebration.
African Influence
At the heart of the zouk sound are two main African elements, the drum and vocal
