NEW RELEASE Captain Yaba - 'Yaba Funk Roots' 'James Brown's funk meets highlife. The young Ghanaian musician is a maestro of the two-stringed molo. . . who has produced a new sound that is powerful, spiritual and highly danceable. The molo sets the tone and the drums follow in flawless harmony. Moreover, the Captain's roughly hewed voice is captivating.'

African Dance
Every country in Africa has its own style and interpretations of dances and rhythms. Even neighbouring tribes will have their own variations - each thinks their own is the best!!! Many moves have their origins taken from everyday influences, e.g. farming such as sewing the seeds in the fields, washing the clothes or hunting. There are dances for certain occasions such as the initiation, when a child becomes an adult. The boys are circumcised and the girls begin their period and learn about life, love and sex. When African dance is performed it usually involves a group of people dancing to a choreography together then moving into solos to show each members' freedom of expression (i.e. party pieces). Some dances have particular meanings or stories behind them. Others are named after the drumming rhythm or the instrument, e.g. kpang logo (silent K) is usually danced to the kpang logo drum. Fumæ fumæ denotes the sound of the rhythm. Everyone can dance to African music. The idea is to feel the music and express yourself. Let yourself go. It's also an incredible and fun way to have a great cardiovascular workout. African Dance classes are taught by Hannah Florance and are accompanied by a live drummer.

Workshop features African dance
Liz Chruscinski
Contributing writer The sound of African beats filled the Clark Hall south lounge Tuesday as the Ma'at Black Student Union hosted its Umeta workshop. Umeta is Swahili for "a dance of young people." Students had the opportunity to learn African and Afro-Caribbean dance moves taught by Menjiwee Winfield, coordinator of campus dance group Omnimov. During the workshop, the moves became increasingly challenging. By the end of the workshop, the students were able to combine several different moves to perform an energetic African dance. Students could see similar dance techniques performed by Omnimov. The group, which began in 1966, is part of the African-American Cultural Program. "It is made of 17 dancers that perform jazz, African, hip-hop, ballet and a little bit of everything," Winfield said. An Omnimov fall concert is scheduled for Dec. 1 in the Illini Union. The Association of Black Cultural Centers will also host several dance groups on campus Dec. 1 through Dec. 3. Additionally, students are invited to become involved in the Ma'at Black Student Union, said Rebecca Bunn, Ma'at vice president. Ma'at meets every Tuesday at 7:30 in the Clark Hall south lounge.
