Archives of Early Lindy Hop HISTORY OF SWING DANCING: AFRICAN INFLUENCES
Introduction: During the days of slavery in the United States, the African slaves entertained themselves, and others, with musical and dance forms that contained elements they brought with them from Africa. Some of the dances the slaves created went on to become national dance crazes for all Americans, such as the Cakewalk, and later the Black Bottom and the Charleston. When the Lindy Hop emerged in Harlem in the late 1920's it contained many of these African characteristics. However, it was danced in a rigid, upright manner (as you can see on the Shorty George Snowden filmclip, After Seben ). In the mid-thirties, Frank Manning introduced the angular posture that soon swept the Savoy Ballroom. Manning had no idea that he was bringing the dance closer to its African roots he says, "I thought it looked better that way, that's all." What follows are a list of characteristics of African dance that are found in African-American dance forms. Many of these characteristics are still very much a part of swing dancing. Some of these characteristics are seen primarily in Savoy style Lindy Hop, and less in some of the other swing forms.

For the next four days, a team of BlackAmericaWeb.com correspondents will report on the linkages between blacks here, in the United States and Africa. No matter where the slave ship docked and unloaded its stolen human cargo centuries ago, the ties that bind blacks in the American hemisphere to the African continent still remain strong. New, more complex African drumming rhythms with reggae melodies from Jamaica and socially activist lyrics from the best of American rap is also gaining popularity in Brazil. And the once forbidden West African religious practice known as Candomble is not only being honored, but is making a comeback as well.

Naomi Diouf, left, and Diamano Coura dancers Diamano Coura, which means “those who bring the message” in Sengalese Wolof language, will collaborate with lighting designer J. Carlos Moore with support of the Traditional Arts Development Program. Mr. Moore, an experienced lighting designer who has collaborated with such artists as Ruby Dee, Pete Escovido, Sheila E and Sean Paul, will design the lighting for Diamano Coura's annual repertory concert November 29 and 30, 2003 and its Creative Partnership Festival, “Collage” on March 6, 2004. The mission of Diamano Coura West African Dance Company is to teach, choreograph and preserve African folklore indigenous to the West African nations of Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone, and to cultivate the understanding and appreciation for it by people of all ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds. As Africa rapidly emerges into the modern world, its traditional dances are becoming increasingly influenced by western staging, choreographic and design ideas. This project will work to maintain cultural integrity in the lighting design and aims to enhance the interpretation of the tradition by transporting the audience into the village context and time where the dance originated.

The sound of beating drums, clapping hands, and cheerful laughter filled the West Campus Apartments activity center as participants gathered together to experience the Art of African Dance. Chaired by yours truly, the event was a highly interactive, hands-on exhibit of the beautiful art form of dance. Facilitated by the African Student Organization, participants were taught various dance routines as ASO explained how many of our dance sequences today stemmed from the lands of Africa. The program concluded with the participants displaying the routines they were taught to the African Student Organization.
