Marie Basse-Wiles and the late
Olukose Wiles founded Maimouna Keita School of African Dance, Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization serving the Tri-State area, in 1983.
Named in honor of Marie's maternal grandmother, the Maimouna Keita School was organized to bring awareness to all who embrace and promote African Culture and History.
Although members of Maimouna Keita have achieved international recognition, the school remains dedicated to its original charter to "teach and present African culture to promote cultural enrichment and help bring about a greater understanding and appreciation of African culture." Towards this end, the Maimouna Keita School offers, produces and presents innovative programming in music, dance, theater and the humanities that celebrate the broad range of cultural traditions within the entire African Diaspora
Over 1000 students throughout the United States and abroad participate in school sponsored programs. These students come from vast socio-economic backgrounds and encompass all age groups (pre-school to senior citizens). Maimouna Keita programs fall into four areas: Humanities and Educational Programs; Cultural Exchange Programs; Community Outreach Programs; and Mainstage Performances.
The Maimouna Keita West African Dance Company is available for performances, demonstrations, weddings and other special events. Email ayokaw@hotmail.com or contact Marie Basse Wiles at (718) 455-7136 for booking information

http://www.umfundalai.com/
Updated: February 25, 2004 The next meeting for the Organization of Umfundalai Teachers is Saturday, March 20, 2004. Kariamu Welsh created the Umfundalai African Dance technique in 1970 out of a quest for a functional and aesthetic method that would mirror some of her personal experiences, as well as a collective ethos and history that would reflect her African and African American heritage. Umfundalai means "essence" or "essential" in Kiswahili. The technique is a Pan-African dance technique in that it draws from dance styles and movements from different African and African disasporan cultures. The technique espouses a holistic view of the body and the arts including theater, music, sound, song, masquerade, and vocalization. The Umfundalai technique emerges from a world view in which the universe is perceived as a harmonious entity in which life force exists in all things including the known and the unseen. The Umfundalai technique stands on the shoulders of the Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus techniques, although it has taken a different path.

African Dance in the Diaspora
Date: Thu, 9 Jun 1994 17:45:36 -0700 (PDT) From: "Wendy E. Cochran" Subject: Re: Afro data base African Dances and Its Changes Overseas West Africa All of the dances that we chose to study tie in with this portion of our journey. The Goree Island, which is right off the shore of Senegal, was a holding place for the slaves, before they made their long journey to their final destinations. Woulousodong is a dance of the Wolorf people in Senegal. One of this dance's different interpretations, when learned in America, is that the movements represented those of the slaves while they walked up the gang plank. The African explanation tells us the movements signify adolescents breaking away from their parents' household and taking on new responsibilities. This is one instance where the interpretation of African dance has changed oversea. Haiti and Cuba Many of the slaves brought to Haiti and Cuba were Yoruba-speaking people. They worshipped more than 400 gods, which are still worshipped today. No doubt, they brought their religious practices with them. The main religion of the Spanish colonizers was Catholicism. It was taught to the Africans. This syncretism of religions resulted in Voodooism in Haiti, Santeria in Cuba and Condomble in Brazil. Haitian and Cuban dances show African origin not only in their religious foundations, but in their rhythmic movements and patterns.
