A History of Art in Africa

A groundbreaking work, this is the first book to cover the arts of the entire continent of Africa, including Egypt, and to survey the art history, rather than the cultural traditions, of African peoples. The authors' unique synthesis of up-to-date research on African arts of many periods and geographic areas has resulted in a major contribution to the literature of art history.
Thousands of years of African art, from prehistory to the present, are considered, encompassing sculpture, painting, architecture, textiles, ceramics, and the myriad art forms of personal adornment and performance. Individual authors contribute chapters on their areas of expertise, yet the whole volume works as a seamless text, weaving together everything from prehistoric Saharan rock art to contemporary sculpture, including the rich, multi-faceted art of the African diaspora.

    African Art
    Traditional and Abstract Stone Carvings
African art sculpture portraying animals and people in both realistic and abstract form. The pieces are all one of a kind, carved using different types of stone such as serpentine, verdite, springstone, African butter jade and rapoko, an African term for soapstone used by indigenous carvers throughout the world. The term rapoko is believed to have originated among the Shona artists of Zimbabwe, where it derived from the stone's common resemblance to the roasted millet consumed by a majority of that country's indigenous inhabitants. All of the different stones can be found in colors varying through black; wide shades of brown; varying shades of green, lightening almost to white; and occasionally brilliant orange and golden shades.
We have an abiding love for the southern part of Africa: its people, its customs, its wildlife that exists freely within its remaining beautiful open spaces. We are particularly fond of African art as represented in the beautiful stone carvings that we offer here for your examination and possible purchase. The sculptures shown in this catalog are representative of those which we import on a regular basis, utilizing both air and sea transport.

Kevin Scanlan Today, the SMA African Art Museum organizes three to five exhibitions a year in its 2000 square foot exhibition space. Most of these are from the collection of approximately 1000 pieces of traditional African art, but since 1996, the staff has mounted three major loan exhibitions: "The Artistry of Traditional African Sculpture", "Nigerian Art from the Judith and Leonard Kahan Collection" and "Keepers of the History: African Art from the Collection of Dr. Michael Berger ". Through the generosity of collector/donors in the metropolitan area, it acquires 50 to 200 significant works of African art each year. Forthcoming exhibitions include "Liberian Images: Past, Present and Future"; "Bamana Door Locks from the Collection of Dr. Pascal J. Imperato", both 1999, and "Yoruba Sculpture: Father Kevin Carroll, SMA, 2000". The museum serves thousands of school children annually through gallery talks and tours at the museum, and presentations in the schools. Lectures at libraries, service clubs, senior citizen organizations and other community sites are offered by Director, Robert J. Koenig. Fees vary with the extent of the presentation. Contemporary African Art The Merka Art Gallery Please feel free to sign the guestbook and tell me what you think of my art!
Welcome to this Gallery and thank you for dropping by.. My name is Mohamed Buwe Osman, a native of Merka Somalia-an ancient historical town known for its beautiful white sandy beaches and stunningly colorful orange dunes- images that are reflected in most of my paintings.
Africa gave me the blessing of exposure to the inspiring world of contemporary art. While attending Medical School in Europe, the beautiful culture nourished my curiosity about Classical Art. North America, being an immigrant, widely opened its window of endless opportunities of enjoying not only the practice of medicine but as well as Art.
My paintings are reflective memories of my rich, diverse and adventureous experiences of life. The images shown on my webpage reflect deep emotionally and psychologically captive difficult to express in words concepts and wisdom of life.
My daily care of patients inspires me. It teaches me everyday the true meaning of life, the gift of living and being surrounded by beautiful people, the joy of re discovering the omnipotent non replicable Divine Art- Creation of the Universe..
Thank you and feel free to contact me any time.

A frican art - Ceremonial sculpture masks , and crafts produced by African tribal cultures , as well as by the African cultures of colonial and post-colonial periods. Generally African art means sub-Saharan art, with the cultures of Africa's northern parts typically referred to as Egyptian and North African. Making generalizations about the visual culture of any group of people is a crude endeavor, especially with a culture as diverse as Africa's. With this thought in mind, know that this survey, as any must be, is tremendously limited in its breadth and depth.

    38. African Art: Masking
Because they are worn by people and intimately linked to the human body, African masks are mobile in their indigenous settings.
    http://community.middlebury.edu/~atherton/masking.html
Masking refers to a broad spectrum of ceremonies and beliefs that have traditionally been practiced in Africa and other parts of the world. To wear a mask and its associated vestment was to conceal one's own identity in the guise of another. Whether this other was a spirit, ancestor, or another person-either revered or feared-the ceremony in which the masked performer participated marked a time of transition, when otherworldly powers were invoked to aid in human affairs. Masks played especially important roles in initiation and funerary rites, as markers of transition when the connections between this world and another were particularly strong. At such times humans sought to reaffirm the order of their society by reference to their beliefs and values exemplified by the masks. On this basis the mask carried the authority demanded by the occasion.
In our society, for the most part, there are no restrictions on who may wear a mask or what they may masquerade as. But in other cultures this is not the case. In traditional Africa, in general, only men wore masks, although the mask itself could be male or female. If permitted to see the masks at all, even in public appearances, women were required to keep at a safe distance, since masks were considered dangerous to them. And only men-specialist carvers, blacksmiths, farmers, or ritual specialists-could make masks.
Masks were worn in three different ways: as face masks, vertically covering the face; as helmets, encasing the entire head; and as crests, resting upon the head, which was commonly covered by a pliable, transparent material as part of the disguise. Examples of these three mask types are included here.
