Ethnic Studies refers to the investigation, exploration, and involvement with those factors and areas that bear on the lives and experiences, both past and present, of ethnically distinct minority groups in the U.S. The Institute for Ethnic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is composed of three separate programs: Latino and Latin American Studies, African American and African Studies, and Native American Studies. Although they operate together under the leadership of a single Director, each program has its own coordinator and plans its own curriculum and activities. The Institute offers several interdisciplinary programs of study. Courses are taught by core faculty who hold formal joint appointments within the Institute and by affiliated faculty from various departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, such as Anthropology, English, Geography, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Political Science, and Sociology, as well as other colleges at UNL, such as Fine and Performing Arts, Business Administration, and Teachers College. The Institute for Ethnic Studies and the three programs also sponsor or co-sponsor a variety of lectures, symposia, research projects, and cultural events on campus, and serve as a resource for UNL students, faculty, and staff as well as the wider community.

Overview Established as an organized research unit in 1969, the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies has a primary commitment to undertake and sponsor research which aims to enhance our understanding of the history, lifestyles, material conditions, and socio-cultural systems of women and men of African descent in the Americas, and in the diaspora.
Goals and Objectives The research program is at the core of the work of the organized research unit (ORU) that is the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA. The program’s mandate is to attract top research talent, sponsor innovative inquiry, disseminate a large volume of relevant, quality research, and ensure a visible contribution by the Center in contemporary and evolving intellectual discourses about the past, present and future condition of the African diaspora. The research division manages the research infrastructure of the Center by supervising the grant and fellowship competitions, maintaining an environment conducive to productive research at the Center, and constantly exploring new opportunities for research support internally at UCLA and externally at foundations and other national and international sources. The division is also a source of intelligence for the Center on contemporary debates and directions in research about African-Americans and the African diaspora in general. It is also the research division that develops the themes and lists of participants for scholarly symposia and other events sponsored by the Center.

History
The College of Humanities and Sciences Welcome from the Dean I would like to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University.
This is a time of great excitement and change in the College: we begin the academic year with the welcome additions of three new opportunities for our students and faculty, a Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies , a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies , and, in collaboration with VCU Life Sciences , a new doctoral program in Integrative Life Sciences.
During the summer, we began implementing the restructuring plan that brought about the establishment of two new schools in the College, the School of Government and Public Affairs and the School of World Studies . These new schools do not have traditional departmental structures, allowing greater collaboration among disciplines and stronger faculty resources for students.
