Julianne Malveaux
The conventional media image of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr has him frozen in time at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963 in his "I Have a Dream" speech. Little attention is paid to King's remarkable political and social evolution in the last five years of his life. He became a trenchant critic of the Vietnam War. In his classic sermon at the Riverside Church in New York, he denounced the war and "the giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism." King increasingly saw the link between economic justice and racial equality and insisted that one was impossible without the other. His final days were spent in Memphis, where he was actively supporting a strike by black sanitation workers. (audio cassette, 60 minutes, 1994) Julianne Malveaux holds a doctorate in economics from MIT. She teaches in the African American Studies Department at the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Malveaux serves on the Board of the San Francisco NAACP. Her articles appear in USA Today, Essence and other newspapers and magazines. She is a regular guest on PBS' To the Contrary.

PRESS RELEASES
Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Announced
FOR RELEASE:
April 28, 2004 Contact: Jim Bradshaw
Launched by President Bush in 2002, the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program offers students the opportunity to serve as summer interns at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. This year's scholars represent a range of academic pursuits, from social work to economics to African American children's literature. Many are working on a master's or doctorate degree. The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program is open to continuing juniors, seniors and graduate students who are enrolled on a full-time basis in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program at the time of their application, as well as in the academic semester following the summer internship. Students from any field of study are welcome to apply. Applicants submit resumes, college transcripts, references, a 500-word essay and a one-page cover letter. This year's essay focused on the link between education policy and the philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr., evident in the following quotation: "We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries or the size of our automobiles, rather than by the quality of our service and relationship to humanity."

Topic: Making it Real: Martin’s Mission in the New Millennium
Opening: ( 1 minute)
Carolyn: Akwaaba! Welcome to "Culture Connection."
I am Dr. Carolyn Holmes, Supervisor of African American Studies.
(and)
Dianne:
I am Mrs. Dianne Partee, Curriculum Specialist, in the Office of African and African American Studies. Carolyn:
In today's program, " Making it Real: Martin’s Mission in the New Millennium," we will recognize the birthday and honor the memory of our foremost national hero, For the past 32 years, since he was killed by an assassin’s bullet on a balcony in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has been remembered by many any different titles a Freedom Fighter, a Drum Major for Justice, an Orator, a leader, a man of God, a Civil Rights Activist, a dreamer, and most recently, a leading candidate for Person of the Century. Much time has been spent talking about his dreams of peace and justice for all humankind and his life mission of helping somebody, but as we enter the year 2000 and this new millennium we must move beyond our memories and our rhetoric. We must join those who are working to make Dr. King’s dreams, his life goals, and his mission REAL.
We have three young people with us today to help us understand what “making it real” means, because they will undoubtedly be among our national and local leaders, heroes, and sheroes as we move further into this new millennium. Before we meet them, let’s review our “Tips For Teachers” and Vocabulary words for students:

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 2004 Noon “Celebrating MLK through the Arts” in the Coop Lounge Workshops and Presentations Prof. Rob Figueroa (University Studies) "War, Ecology, and Environmental Pacifism" (108 Persson) Interspersed with film footage of communities displaying an environmental dimension to Dr. King’s vision for a democracy without oppression, Professor Figueroa will share a discussion of King’s influence on the current connections between the fight for ecological protection (as a battle against corporate, military, and industrial violence), and the struggles of oppressed peoples across the globe. Prof. John Palmer (Educational Studies) and Prof. Carolyn Kissane (Educational Studies): "Whatever Happened to School Desegregation?" (208 Persson) This talk will offer an analysis of the school desegregation process, beginning with the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka landmark decision in 1954 and extending into the resegregation of our schools during the 1980s into the 2000s. The presenters aim to provide desegregation’s historical background as well as discuss two contrary views on the subject: 1) segregated/separate schools and communities were/are more beneficial for African American students and 2) desegregated schools were/are more constructive in promoting higher academic achievement for African American students. The presenters hope to develop dialogue with the audience around these issues. Jessica Jackson:

Senior Correspondent Ray Suarez talks with Michael Eric Dyson about his new book, I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr. RAY SUAREZ: This week, as the country celebrates the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, a newly published book challenges the widely accepted views of the man, his work, and his words. Michael Eric Dyson, a Baptist minister and professor of philosophy and religious studies at DePaul University in Chicago is the author of "I May not get There with You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr." Professor, welcome to the program. MICHAEL ERIC DYSON: Thanks for having me, Ray. RAY SUAREZ: Well, you've thrown it down there from the title page; "The True Martin Luther King, Jr." That implies that there are false ones out there. What do you mean by that? MICHAEL ERIC DYSON: Well, I think that there are many distorted images of King that are circulating in our culture that have gained currency the King who is the great defender of conservative ideas that Mr. Ward Connelly and other conservatives in California have put forth, the notion that King was a flawless, perfect icon who was able to embody in his life the ideals of American democracy without reflecting as well its flaws, or the King who simply was a make-us-feel-good kind of hero and not the dangerous threat to American society that he was deemed, at least in the eyes of the F.B.I.

IDE Home Community Programs Policies and Procedures Recruitment ... Dartmouth Homepage Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration The program theme varies each year but we are always trying to explore what we learn in our society and what shapes us as we negotiate the diverse world that surrounds us. Throughout our celebration, we attempt to acknowledge a number of very powerful and competing dynamics in US history; some of them affirm our humanity, some detract from our common humanity. A campus that values difference and that supports diversity is a campus that encourages its members to explore the complexities that are central to intellectual life. Matters of race, ethnicity, and gender are not always easy to confront. But they must be confronted for issues concerning them are critical to this society and must be understood by those who would seek to lead it. A diverse campus enriches us all. The observance of Martin Luther King Day provides us with the opportunity to recognize and to celebrate that fact. Dartmouth has a charter commitment and a proud tradition of open access for all. We need to live up to that tradition and ensure that we not only provide equal access for all qualified students but that we also encourage a climate at the College that is open and accepting of difference. An academic community can afford to be no less than this.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
American's foremost proponent of a nonviolent civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. brought a minister's zeal to social issues. The son of a minister and a graduate of Morehouse College in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, King attended both the Crozier Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania and Boston University's School of Theology, where he received his Ph.D. in 1955. Upon completion of his studies, King returned to the South and became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. There he gained international recognition for his role in the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955 to 1956). In 1959, King moved to Atlanta to lead the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. From 1960 to his death in 1968, he was co-pastor with his father at Ebenezer Baptist Church. King pressed for civil rights throughout the United States. Often he was arrested and jailed but the demonstrations he led and the power they displayed were vital to the enactment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Foremost among those events was the 1963 March on Washington during which King declared his dream of freedom before 250,000 at the Lincoln Memorial.
