AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES? Courses in African American Studies generate broader awareness and appreciation of the world that is a fundamental goal of a liberal education. African American Studies can meet the diverse needs and interests of a variety of students, whether black or non-black, in several ways. First, it enhances understanding of both the black experience and the societies of which African Americans are a part. It provides a significant means of understanding and examining American society, the diversity and pluralistic nature of the black experience, and important continuities and commonalties across national and racial boundaries.

Typically, a subject search in the PAC for these books begins with "African American(s)" followed by a narrowing category. For example, "African Americans - Dictionaries", or "African Americans - Bibliography", or "African Americans - Biography."

African American Studies – Research Guides and Websites
Please report any non functioning site to tamblyn3@comcast.net so it can be removed.
Regarding Websites : Web research can be very useful and lead to much useful and important information. While every effort has been made to list only "reliable" sites, researchers should be aware that control of sites change (often without notice) from time to time and, thus, the reliability and point of view of the website may change (for better or worse). One of the best uses of web information is to locate good primary and secondary sources that should be directly examined. Websites also go out of existence, so, for scholarly work, they are not reliable sources, like a published work which, presumably, will always be available in some library (Library of Congress) for examination. Beware especially of quoting or otherwise relying upon unidentified opinions found on websites.
Basic guide to web research:
  • Use your library BEFORE you start your web research. You will learn many terms that will be useful in your web research. You should read at least one good, broad secondary source on the subject before starting your research.

    African American Studies
African American Studies is an interdepartmental program. The program focuses on the experiences and intellectual traditions of African Americans and Africans in the African Diaspora, but it also recognizes that other academic subjects bear importantly on the understanding of these experiences and should have a place in the African American Studies curriculum. Students in the African American Studies program will encounter African American experiences through a variety of disciplinary lenses; will confront the implications of living in an increasingly multi-cultural world and nation; will identify the local, regional, and national issues and problems that will affect their lives; and will formulate personal views and agendas for understanding such experiences, living, issues, and problems. African American culture: Some sites you should bookmark
    January 1999
Vol. 60, No. 1 by Elna L. Saxton and Jo McClamroch This piece began with a focus on education-related and other scholarly sites. Since African American Studies (or Black Studies or Afro-American Studies) has been an established academic discipline at dozens of institutions since the late 1960s, we were confident we would quickly be overrun with quality sites. It soon became apparent that there are many quality sites, and that to focus only on academic sites was too narrow for this article. Our resource list, therefore, expanded beyond academia into a total of five categories: Getting started, Educational sites/research centers, Organizations/Associations, Afrocen-tric sites, and E-journals/news services. We do deliberately highlight more African American than Africana sites. At the same time, we do not suggest that we could capture the essence of or exhaust the number of potentially valuable sites for any culture's links, be it African American, Asian American, Native American, or any ethnic group. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, the Internet is a mother lode of information for cultural information.

The most unique aspect of this department is that, through the broad spectrum of the humanities, arts and social sciences' disciplines, it specifically examines the cultural, historical and political life of African Americans in the United States. Using the perspectives of varied disciplines, our courses define the historical and current connections amongst people of African descent in the Americas with those in Africa, the Caribbean and other areas of the world. Minors
A minor in African American Studies is an excellent complement to several majors, especially those which involve interracial contacts and relations. Students pursuing majors in the social sciences, communications, humanities, education, social work, recreation and park administration, law enforcement and justice administration, and community health and health services management could particularly benefit by electing this minor.
