University of Chicago professor Kenneth Warren recommends three books for Black History Month. Fathom > African American Studies An Interview with General Editor Manning Marable (Columbia University)
During his opening address to the world's first Pan-African Conference in August 1900, American civil rights leader and author W.E.B. DuBois made an observation that would echo throughout the next century when he said, "The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color-line." In response to the 2002 Black History Month theme, "The Color Line Revisited: Is Racism Dead?" Columbia professor and DuBois scholar Manning Marable spoke about DuBois' prediction and its resonance at the beginning of the 21st century.

The African and African American Studies Department was founded in 1970 and is committed to helping implement the School District's policy which "requires every school to provide a well-rounded program in African American Studies as an integral part of its total school experience". Over the years the Department has served public, private, and parochial schools; administrative offices; and local community organizations (parent groups, universities, museums, newspapers, communication media, etc.). It has been recognized by scholars as a leading national education model in this area of study. The instructional goals, which are the foundation of the program, include:
    • destroying myths and stereotypes as they relate to people of African ancestry
    • helping all students gain an appreciation and understanding of the cultural heritage of people of African ancestry
    • helping each student develop a frame of reference and a conceptual basis for understanding and attacking the persistent problems resulting from racism in American society
    • helping students develop the skills of inquiry to differentiate between factual knowledge and propaganda.

Welcome to African American Studies (AAS) web site at Arizona State University . Our focus is given to the diversity of past and present experiences of those who live in the United States as well as in Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Central America. We hope you enjoy our website. Mission African American Studies is a multi-disciplinary program focusing on people of African descent throughout the world. Drawing on the pre-colonial African culture, primary focus is given to the diversity of Black experiences in the western hemisphere. While the program is dedicated to scholarly research, education and creative activities, it also seeks to build partnerships with the community and utilize channels for informing policies which affect the life of Blacks in the Diaspora. Director's Corner AAS continues its commitment to academic and creative excellence, global awareness, and community service. This year our core and affiliated faculty offered 37 courses reflecting the culture, socio-politics, and history of African Americans and the African diaspora. Twenty-five majors and more than 2,000 students enrolled in our core and affiliated courses during the 2000-2001 academic year. In December, we awarded our third AAS Certificate to Kimberly Carr, who graduated with a B.A. in Communication. Excellence in instruction by our faculty was not only demonstrated by high student evaluations, but by important awards and honors from academic units, national organizations, and the community.

Only Websites that are reflective of African American realities were considered; sites that are exclusively African in origin or focus are only rarely included. Recommended Websites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness, and accuracy. Web index sites, clearinghouses, directories (all sites that gather or point to resources elsewhere), and e-journals and electronic news (publications, newspapers, and news programs that include actual content, as opposed to just tables of contents or subscription information) are the focus.
