Biography of the African American labor leader, journalist, and civil rights activist, A. Philip Randolph. Randolph won the first national labor agreement for a black union, The Sleeping Car porters. His threat of a protest march on Washington forced President Roosevelt to ban segregation in the federal government and defense industries at the onset of WWII and again he forced Truman to integrate the military. Finally with the 1963 March on Washington, Randolph succeeded in placing civil rights at the forefront of the nation's legislative agenda as he passed the torch to Martin Luther King, Jr. Includes music of the labor and civil rights movements. 86 min. Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture
in Africa and the African Diaspora
The Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture in Africa and the African Diaspora (ISRCAD) is the research arm of the African and African-American Studies Program at Notre Dame. Its purpose is to encourage and provide support for the interdisciplinary study of the histories, religions, languages, and cultures of peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora from antiquity to the present. Through its slate of projected activities—which includes an annual colloquium, a lecture series, a research annual, a postdoctoral fellowship program, and a visiting scholars program—is hoped that ISRCAD will further enhance the intellectual climate at Notre Dame for advanced research on a range of pivotal issues related to Africa and the African Diaspora. It is also hoped that it will provide a supportive and vibrant intellectual community in which humanists and social scientists from a broad cross-section of disciplines can examine these issues. ISRCAD's activities will also help to forward the threefold of the African and African-American Studies Program: (1) to provide a disciplined and rigorous intellectual environment for the study of issues related to both Africa and the African Diaspora; (2) to promote educational and cultural events that increase public awareness about the histories, literatures, languages, and cultures of African and Afrodiasporan peoples; and (3) to provide resources that encourage and facilitate the rigorous interdisciplinary study of Africa and the African Diaspora within and beyond the classroom.

Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture
in Africa and the African Diaspora Inaugural Colloquium
The Institute officially began its activities on 4 October 2000 with a reception and inaugural lecture delivered by Dr. Leslie James of DePauw University entitled "African American Religion and Culture in the Diaspora: The Road Trodden and Untrodden." The event was attended by some fifty members of the Notre Dame and larger Michiana communities. In addition to marking the opening of the Institute, the event provided an occasion to celebrate the growth of the African and African-American Studies (AFAM) Program. The contributions of its founder (Dr. Joseph Scott) and several of its recent directors (Dr. Frederick Wright, Dr. Kim Flint-Hamilton, and Dr. Patrick Mason) were noted and those in attendance left the event challenged by Leslie James' inspiring vision of Notre Dame as the ideal locus for the study of religion and culture in Africa and the Diaspora. His message will do much to inspire those affiliated with ISRCAD to carry forward the work of those pioneering individuals that laid the foundation for the AFAM program at the University.

The basic mission of the Institute is to produce scholarship that addresses the problems and debates on race and inequality within the social terrain of urban America. The Institute invites the fullest possible range of scholars, community leaders, public officials, and others to participate in its forums, workshops, and conferences. The Institute's programs concentrate on the problems of American cities, especially the specific issues facing the black population of New York City. The Institute also explores the prospects of multiracial and multicultural political coalition-building in the context of urban and national politics.
