Black Books Required reading in African-American literature
by Ricco Villanueva Siasoco Who said the classics were all written by dead white males? In the last two hundred years, black writers have contributed some of the most spirited and important works to American literature. These range from early narratives depicting slavery to modern works dealing with the lingering effects of slavery, racism and apartheid. In fact, some of the most risky work these days is being written not only by African Americans, but Americans of Dominican, Jamaican, and Haitian descent. Not to mention black writers in Africa and Europe.
    The First African American Writer
Many of the earliest published black writers were slaves and abolitionists. First to make a name was Phillis Wheatley , a slave brought from Africa as a child and sold to a Boston merchant. Wheatley spoke no English but by the time she was sixteen, under the tutelage of her owners, had mastered the language. Her interest in literature led her to write and publish

African-American Literature: Gay Male
page: Major Themes Although it is risky to make any sweeping generalizations about this diverse body of literature, it is possible to identify at least four major themes that dominate the works of contemporary black gay male writers: the complex relationship between the individual black gay self and the larger African-American community, the devastating consequences of racism, the pain and the possibilities of interracial love, and the tragedy of AIDS. The relationship between the individual black self and the black communitya frequent theme in African-American literature in generalsurfaces insistently in the works of many contemporary black gay male writers. Since a strong and enabling sense of racial self is necessary to cope with the psychological assaults of white racism, the black gay male protagonist can rarely afford to disconnect himself completely from the black community and seek total assimilation into the predominantly white gay community. American author Ernest Hemmingway. "One of the timeless phrases with which the United States its history, its perspective, its reality is identified is " e pluribus unum, " or, "from many, one." These words describe both how the United States and its literature have evolved over the centuries through the coming together of many traditions to form a nation and a literature that are different from the ones that have existed a century, a decade, even a year before. All of U.S. literature is multicultural, multiethnic, multiracial from precolonial days to the present. At one moment in history or another, one grouping may have defined multiculturalism, in that timeframe, such as the European cultures that flowed into the United States 100 years ago, and those of Asia and Latin America in the year 2000. Today, American literature is rich in newer traditions and some that have been transformed. Venues, sensibilities, themes have changed as well. In considering developments within Arab American, Asian American, Black American, Hispanic American and Native American writing, this journal introduces a global audience to the continuously evolving multicultural literature in our day, and to a selection of gifted creative talents, as the process of renewal continues in U.S. literature in the new century."
