Critical Analysis Series: Kola Boof/Womanist Writer 2002 Apr 21
"Entering the world of Kola Boof was not as smooth for me as I had expected. I'm an entirely different kind of woman from Kola. We're both black women, but I am very lightskinned, upper-class and conservative. I would never pose topless on the back of a book cover. I'm an American, born and raised in Richmond, Virginia while Kola is a Nile River Sudanese who was adopted and raised by African Americans after her birth parents were murdered for speaking out against slavery in the Sudan. I am Christian in a serious waywhile Kola Boof's religious beliefs seem to be mysterious, Goddess-based, animist and totally of her own choosing. She was born Islamic but now rejects that religion. In fact, she is quite bitter towards Islamic Arabic people."

African-American Literature: Gay Male
page: But even more compelling because of their emotional immediacy are the numerous testimonial narratives and poemsby writers such as David Frechette, Assoto Saint, Bobby Smith, Donald Woods, and many othersthat bear witness to illness and death, mourn the loss of friends and lovers, and memorialize the many thousands gone. Some of the most talented black gay writers of the post-Baldwin generation, including Melvin Dixon, Craig Harris, Joseph Beam, Essex Hemphill, and Assoto Saint, among others, have already died of AIDS-related illnesses. Still others are fighting personal battles against the infection. Contemporary black gay writing, therefore, reflects a mounting sense of emergency while it continues to give voice and visibility to black gay men living through these treacherous times. Course Description
CULF 1318, an introductory literature course, fulfills three hours of the Cultural Foundations' Component in the General Education Requirements. It fosters the goals of the General Education Curriculum by addressing issues of cultural difference and developing the student's understanding of how their own cultural heritage and perspectives relate to those of others.
This course will survey the literature of African American men and women and focus on the critical and theoretical issues implicit in an informed reading of the texts selected. Central to the discussion will be an attempt to delineate what is meant by culture within the tensions of the demands for self-determination by a marginalized group. Prerequisites
Completion of FSTY 1311 or ENGW 1301 (Rhetoric and Composition 1) with a grade of "C" or better.
