CULTURE CONNECTION #1
OCTOBER 3, 1995 "FROM THE BEGINNING - RETURNING TO THE SOURCE"
("SANKOFA")
Opening
Akwaaba! Welcome to "Culture Connection."
I am Dr. Carolyn Holmes , Supervisor of African American Studies.
(and)
I am Mrs. Dianne Partee , Curriculum Specialist, in the School District of Philadelphia's Office of African and African American Studies, Department of Standards, Equity and Student Services.
We are your co-host for this series of monthly programs which will highlight topics, issues and themes which demonstrate the richness of the African World Experience, on the continent itself, and in the diaspora the many places throughout the world where African peoples live today. Carolyn - Dr. Ella Forbes, History Professor in Temple University's African American Studies Department, defines the term culture as "the full being or total essence of a people, which includes their world view, language, beliefs, customs, traditions, philosophy, art, music, and dance." Each of the programs in our series will focus on specific aspects of Black culture which will help us to reclaim the roots and the full richness of the African past. We will then be able to reconnect our African past to our present African American and world reality. Dianne - Some of the topics we will share with you during future "Culture Connection" programs are:
o Reclaiming Kemet or Ancient Egypt
o Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American History in Perspective
o Afrocentric Literature for Children o African Contributions to Science and Technology

African Americans have played a vital role in the history and culture of their country since its founding. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history.
Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

INTRODUCTION
In celebration of Black History Month, the New York State Library is issuing An Afro-American Bibliography: the Arts. The bibliography lists selected resources of the New York State Library that document the achievements of African-Americans in the arts, as well as the historical and cultural contexts of these achievements. In addition to primary sources and significant historical and critical works, the bibliography contains references to bibliographies and research aids. Works dealing with such major African-American collections in the United States as the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and History and the Black Culture Collection are also included. The bibliography highlights many of the New York State Library's collections, including the U.S. and New York State government documents collections, the microform collections, the play collection and the rare books collection. The mission of the New York State Library is to provide reference, information and materials to support the work of New York State government and to ensure that every resident of the State has convenient free access to essential library services. To carry out this mission, the Library serves as the principal library resource for State government and serves as a coordinating and resource center for the statewide interlibrary loan network. If you cannot obtain the works listed in this bibliography at your local library, you may request them through interlibrary loan. Besides the bibliographic information, each entry in this bibliography contains the New York State Library call number in parenthesis. The use of this call number helps expedite the interlibrary loan process.

A Conversation With Lorraine-Johnson Coleman... 1. What is the inspiration for your characters? Is there really an Aunt Maribelle? The characters in the "kinfolks"section of Just Plain Folks are based on family members that I know and love. Naturally, I have changed the names to protect the guilty. Other characters in the book are based on a combination of research, conversations, anecdotes as well as, my own fancy. Although this is definitely a work of fiction, I hope that readers will not only find the characters and experiences realistic, but will be reminded of positive experiences and loved ones of their own. 2. Does Farmville, North Carolina really exist? It most certainly does, 77 miles E-SE of Raleigh on Highway 264. It is also 12 miles west of Greenville, North Carolina where East Carolina University is located. Strangely enough, I discovered during the course of my work in heritage preservation, that there is a Farmville, Virginia only a 3-1/2 hour drive away. You know, there may be a lot more "Farmvilles" around than we thought. 3. What is the purpose of your afterthoughts?

Walter Dean Myers Bio In His Own Words... I came to Harlem from West Virginia when I was three, after my mother died. My father, who was very poor, gave me up to two wonderful people, my foster parents. Thinking back to boyhood days, I remember the bright sun on Harlem streets, the easy rhythms of black and brown bodies, the sounds of children streaming in and out of red brick tenements. I remember La Marqueta, in East Harlem, where people spoke a multitude of languages. I remember playing basketball in Morningside Park until it was too dark to see the basket and then climbing over the fence to go home. From my foster parents, the Deans, I received the love that was ultimately to strengthen me, even when I had forgotten its source. It was my foster mother, a half-Indian, half-German woman, who taught me to read, though she herself was barely literate. I remember having her read to me every day from True Romance magazine. Eventually, I was able to read magazines or newspapers to her. My father and my grandfather used to tell me stories. My father would tell scary stories. My grandfather's storieshe was a very religious manwere Old Testament, God's-gonna-get-ya kind of stories. I read a lot of comic books and any kind of thing I could find. One day, a teacher found me. She grabbed my comic book and tore it up. I was really upset, but then she brought in a pile of books from her own library. That was the best thing that ever happened to me.

There are no generalservice teams, only identity-specific teams. of racism will improve the therapeutic alliance with the african-american mental health client
http://www.sallysatelmd.com/html/a-wsj15.html
Psychiatric Apartheid
The Wall Street Journal By Sally Satel "As a member of the White group, what responsibility do you hold for the racist, oppressive, and discriminating manner by which you personally and professionally deal with minorities?" asks a popular textbook for psychotherapists, "Counseling the Culturally Different." Welcome to the world of multicultural therapy. The idea behind multicultural therapy, or "cultural competence," as it is sometimes called, is that human identity is primarily culture-dependent. The theory presumes that if therapist and patient are members of different groups, especially racial groups, they will experience miscommunication and mistrust. The therapist must therefore learn a different set of rules for treating patients of each different race. The notion of treating patients according to their racial or ethnic groups has gained increasing acceptance in recent years. Multicultural therapy pops up regularly on the conference-and-workshop circuit and is the subject of a growing list of scholarly books. It is also an increasing part of mental health training: Only a handful of counseling programs required multicultural counseling courses in the 1970s and early 1980s, but recent surveys have found that 42% to 59% of counseling programs currently require such a course. The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association (which is meeting this week in New York), and the federal government's Public Health Service have all gotten on the multicultural bandwagon, publishing treatment guidelines for racial and ethnic groups.
