African Americans have played a vital role in the history and culture of their country since its founding. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history.
    Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
    Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

    Biography:
Charles W. Chesnutt, America's first great Black novelist, lived in the distinct political, social and cultural environment that found expression in his literary works. By analyzing the works of a writer, we can gain the general insights of the author's contemporary environment - the world he grows up in and the world he later writes to. Charles W. Chesnutt is not an exception, and his novels reveal the harsh world of prejudice and social indifference in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Charles W. Chesnutt was born June 20, 1858, in Cleveland Ohio, the eldest child of Andrew Jackson Chesnutt and Anne Maria Sampson, free blacks from North Carolina. The increasing civil turmoil regarding slavery and coming political unrest forced Charles Chesnutt's parents to move to Ohio, where they remained before the end of Civil War, and came back to Fayetteville, North Carolina with five young children. Charles's father, Andrew Jackson Chesnutt, was a product of union between Waddell Cade, a prosperous slaveholding farmer and Ann Chesnutt, his mistress and later his housekeeper. Charles's mother also descended from a free mulatto Fayetteville family. Charles Chesnutt's family heritage gave him the features that barely distinguished him from whites, but determined his social status as lower than that of the white Americans.

    Psychiatric Apartheid
The Wall Street Journal By Sally Satel "As a member of the White group, what responsibility do you hold for the racist, oppressive, and discriminating manner by which you personally and professionally deal with minorities?" asks a popular textbook for psychotherapists, "Counseling the Culturally Different." Welcome to the world of multicultural therapy. The idea behind multicultural therapy, or "cultural competence," as it is sometimes called, is that human identity is primarily culture-dependent. The theory presumes that if therapist and patient are members of different groups, especially racial groups, they will experience miscommunication and mistrust. The therapist must therefore learn a different set of rules for treating patients of each different race. The notion of treating patients according to their racial or ethnic groups has gained increasing acceptance in recent years. Multicultural therapy pops up regularly on the conference-and-workshop circuit and is the subject of a growing list of scholarly books. It is also an increasing part of mental health training: Only a handful of counseling programs required multicultural counseling courses in the 1970s and early 1980s, but recent surveys have found that 42% to 59% of counseling programs currently require such a course. The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association (which is meeting this week in New York), and the federal government's Public Health Service have all gotten on the multicultural bandwagon, publishing treatment guidelines for racial and ethnic groups.
