    INTRODUCTION
In honor of Black History Month, the New York State Library is issuing An African-American Bibliography: History. The bibliography lists selected resources of the New York State Library that document and comment on the experience of African Americans in the history of the United States. In addition to primary sources and significant historical works, the bibliography contains references to bibliographies and research aids. Although the bibliography covers the African-American experience from the colonial period to the present, it emphasizes the post World War II period and the civil rights movement that followed the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. The bibliography includes the major civil rights legislation of the past three decades, records the voices of African-American activism and protest, and illustrates the impact African-American voters and political candidates have had on the electoral process. The bibliography also focuses on the work of African-American historians and social scientists, including not only classic texts by John Hope Franklin and Carter G. Woodson, the "Father of Black History," but also works by William Junius Wilson and Shelby Steele that reflect current African-American debate on social policy.

INTRODUCTION
In celebration of Black History Month, the New York State Library is issuing An Afro-American Bibliography: the Arts. The bibliography lists selected resources of the New York State Library that document the achievements of African-Americans in the arts, as well as the historical and cultural contexts of these achievements. In addition to primary sources and significant historical and critical works, the bibliography contains references to bibliographies and research aids. Works dealing with such major African-American collections in the United States as the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and History and the Black Culture Collection are also included. The bibliography highlights many of the New York State Library's collections, including the U.S. and New York State government documents collections, the microform collections, the play collection and the rare books collection. The mission of the New York State Library is to provide reference, information and materials to support the work of New York State government and to ensure that every resident of the State has convenient free access to essential library services. To carry out this mission, the Library serves as the principal library resource for State government and serves as a coordinating and resource center for the statewide interlibrary loan network. If you cannot obtain the works listed in this bibliography at your local library, you may request them through interlibrary loan. Besides the bibliographic information, each entry in this bibliography contains the New York State Library call number in parenthesis. The use of this call number helps expedite the interlibrary loan process.

Slippery Slopes and Proliferating Prizes
By Marc Aronson Story of the Negro , a 1949 Newbery Honor Book, aside), and there were relatively few African Americans working in the field. Things were not a great deal better by 1982 when ALA recognized the award, although by that time two black authors, Virginia Hamilton and Mildred Taylor, had won the Newbery, and Leo and Diane Dillon (an interracial team) had secured two Caldecotts. For those who have been ignored, denied their due place as creators, as readers, as a public, there is a pure existential value in being acknowledged. There is real power in saying, We are here, we do count, we have something to say. The more frequently and powerfully this point is made, the more new artists are likely to join the field. But there is an undertow beneath this swell of success. By insisting on testing the racial identity of its winners, the CSK shifts its focus from literature to biography. Who you are, which box or boxes you check on the census form, comes first. Your community, your ethnicity, comes before your talent. And as long as the prize is essentially a community honoring and encouraging its own, it is not clear how the rest of the public is meant to react. read well about them, too.

Shades of 1983
By Salim Muwakkil Obama won a stunning victory. In a field of seven, the 42-year-old state senator captured more than 52 percent of the vote. His closest competitor, State Comptroller Dan Hynes, polled less than 24 percent. The third finisher, Blair Hull, won 10 percent of the vote. Hull had been leading the field after spending $29 million of his own money on the race, but his campaign ran aground after divorce records revealed an incident of domestic violence. Some analysts argue that to win votes among the general electorate these new-school black candidates must move beyond racial grievance and civil rights modalities. Several black politicians have adopted this model, including Reps. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.) and Gregory W. Meeks (D-N.Y). Cory Booker, the Ivy League-educated candidate for mayor of Newark, N.J., also sought to embody this new-school mode in his unsuccessful run. But many black voters are wary of such candidates and some initially withheld support for Obama because he was projected as such a post-race candidate. There even were rumors that he was cozying up to the Democratic Leadership Council.

LORRAINE VIVIAN HANSBERRY
Lorraine Hansberry was born, May 19, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Carl Augustus Hansberry and Nannie Perry. Her father was a realtor whose landmark suit to overturn the restrictive covenants that barred blacks from white neighborhoods was argued successfully before the Supreme Court in 1940. Lorraine graduated from Englewood High School in Chicago in 1948 and for two years attended the University of Wisconsin, where her interests in art and writing were complemented by courses in dramatic literature and stage design. Hansberry grew dissatisfied with college, and after a summer of art studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago, she moved to New York City in August 1950. There she renewed her acquaintance with Paul Robeson, who had visited her Chicago home. Louis Burnham, editor of Robeson's monthly magazine Freedom, invited her to become a reporter; and within a short time she was involved in the civil rights struggle. In 1951 she was a member of the delegation that petitioned Governor of Mississippi Fielding L. Wright on behalf of alleged rapist Willie McGee, and a year later she represented Robeson at the Intercontinental Peace Congress in Montevideo, Uruguay. By 1953 Hansberry was an associate editor of Freedom. In that year she resigned her position to pursue a playwriting career. On June 20, 1953, she married Robert Nemiroff, a writer and a graduate student at New York University. For the next three years she worked at a variety of part-time jobs, studied African history under W. E. B. Du Bois, and wrote plays. In 1957 she completed the manuscript for A Raisin in the Sun, which opened on Broadway in March 1959 and was an immediate hit.

Office Published: January 16, 1999 Kimberla Lawson Roby took readers and bestseller lists by storm with her debut novel BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, "a vivid picture of two black women struggling to put their lives into perspective" Rockford, Illinois Register Star. Now Roby returns with HERE AND NOW, a captivating portrait of two women at the crossroads of life, and her most emotionally powerful story yet. HERE and NOW
By KIMBERLA LAWSON ROBY Two sisters, who are as different as night and day, are each so hungry for what the other has, they are tearing their lives apart. Brilliant and vibrant, Marcella Jones had the whole world in her hands, until she gave her heart to the wrong man. Tyrone was handsome and charismatic, but he left her destitute, raising two small children alone-and yearning for the kind of life her dead-end job will never provide. Marcella's elder sister Racquel, lives in a fine home, has a fulfilling career and the love of Kevin, her handsome, successful, supportive husband. Yet her desperate longing for a child is driving her into a deep depression and away from Kevin. In the tradition of Waiting To Exhale and Big Girls Don't Cry, HERE AND NOW is the poignant story of two strong, intelligent women facing tragedy, surviving loss and terrible sorrow, and ultimately learning that only with each other's help can they heal the hurt and celebrate the joy in their lives. At turns heartbreaking and hilarious, it marks the return of a wise, funny and fiercely passionate new voice in African-American fiction.
