Customer Reviews I highly recommend this book to teenagers because it tells you about a lot of things that you don't learn in the classroom. The Civil Rights Chronicle belongs in every library, every school, and every home. This honest look at the enslavement of people is not to be missed. The struggle for independence and freedom is chronicled here for all, black, white, or 'other', to read and understand. There are so many things in this world that should never be allowed to happen again!Yet they continue to happen. by Shelley Pinckney “Not even the slightest degree of oppression, or the slightest injustice in respect of a national minority- such are the principles of working class democracy.” [i] The Communist Party of Washington State struggled diligently to fulfill Lenin’s pledge, working to improve conditions for people of color in the Pacific Northwest. The CP was one of the first Left groups to take up the issue of racism and oppression. During the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, the CP made great strides in the areas of union desegregation, public education about racial injustices, and legal support for civil rights activities. The Communist Party taught that a racially-divided society and work force benefited only the elite, since people of color were employed as strikebreakers during the great strikes before and after World War I, including the general strike of 1919 in Seattle. In the 1920s the Party began actively working within the community to change the conditions of workers of color, and broadened this activism in the decades that followed. While Communist did not believe racism could be ended completely without the end of capitalism, they did believe that changes could occur that would help move society towards a more egalitarian structure.

How far, how deep will Nigeria's human rights commission go? Special to USAfricaonline.com and NigeriaCentral.com A Nigerian government-established body, the Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission, led by Justice Chukwudifu Oputa began public hearing on October 24, 2000. It has a schedule for five cities within five months. The Oputa Commission terms of reference mandate it to investigate human rights abuses in Nigeria which occured between January 15, 1966 (first military coup in the country) to May 28, 1999. The hearings should include assassinations, unjust arrests, the 1986 parcel bomb assassination of Newswatch magazine co-founder Dele Giwa, pogrom committed against the Igbos of south eastern Nigeria in the northern region of Nigeria in 1966, the assassination of late presidential claimant M.K.O Abiola's wife, Kudirat, the suspicious death of Alhaji Abiola himself, the 1995 execution of radical Ogoni rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, the jailing of the incumbent president, Olusegun Obasanjo by Abacha in 1995, the suspected murder of his former deputy Shehu Musa Yar'Adua and a number of other gross violations. An interesting twist occurred when Obasanjo, himself a former military dictator (February 1976 to October 1979) and signatory for a number of draconian laws in Nigeria responded to the concerns of some Nigerians regarding whether his own first tenure of head of state will receive adequate review without fear or favor (since he established the Oputa-led commission) said he should be treated like others.

The Trial of Ruby McCollum 2003 Dec 16
"Ruby McCollum, a wealthy African-American wife, finds herself pregnant a second time by her white physician and senator-elect lover. Torn between her husband, who threatens to shoot her if she has another white baby, and her lover, who threatens to shoot her if she aborts his child, Ruby chooses to murder her lover. Zora Neale Hurston, famous writer of the Harlem Renaissance who covered the case for The Pittsburgh Courier, pointed out that the trial marked the first time in history that "Paramour Rights"the unwritten antebellum law giving a white man the right to a "Negro" woman whether she was married or notwas called into question by the testimony of Ruby McCollum."
