An Army at Dawn
The War in North Africa, 1942-1943 Now available in paperback! Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for History W inner of the 2002 AHF Distinguished Writing Award for U.S. Army History 1899-2002 In the first volume of a remarkable trilogy, Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Atkinson provides the definitive history of the war in North Africa. The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is an epic story of courage and calamity, of miscalculation and enduring triumph. Now, sixty years after America joined this titanic struggle, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern reader can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. Atkinson's narrative begins on the eve of Operation TORCH, the daring amphibious invasion of Morocco and Algeria. After three days of hard fighting against the French, American and British troops push deeper into North Africa. But the confidence gained after several early victories soon wanes; once Allied forces engage the Germans, it becomes apparent that they have more than met their match. Casualties mount rapidly, battle plans prove ineffectual, and hope for a quick and decisive victory evaporates. The Allies particularly the Americans discover that they are woefully unprepared to fight and win this war, in part due to lack of experience, in part due to an unwillingness to pay the necessary price in blood. North Africa then becomes a proving ground: it is here that American officers learn how to lead, here that soldiers learn how to hate, here that an entire army learns what it will take vanquish a formidable enemy.

North-south sections along 140W and 110W longitude, extending from 10S to 10N latitude.
These three movies show the model oceanic changes that took place in 1982-83 from different perspectives. The ocean surface view animation shows sea surface temperature and horizontal currents. Under normal conditions (like the first four months of 1982), there is a "cold tongue" along the equator that exists because the wind stress field causes cold water to be "upwelled" from below the surface along the equator, mostly east of the Dateline. www.ceo.org/applications/satview/

Our world has become an increasingly complicated place. We don't know what country will be on the news tonight and how events there will concern us. It is important to know the world and to know about the world before the world comes to us. Consider how much geography the average 16 year old knows and remember they may vote in the next presidential election.
The heart of geography, and even the source of its name, is the map - a picture of the world which organizes our understanding of places. Manipulating a map, assembling it, is the best way to learn where the different countries are and what other countries they are near to or far way from. This forms a lasting image and understanding. It is hard to know much of a foreign place without knowing where it is. The map is a framework that brings other knowledge together and makes the world understandable.

    ETHIOPIA:
Formerly Abyssinia. Its resources are primarily agricultural, with about 80% of the inhabitants subsistence farmers. Mineral deposits have been commercially exploited; iron, copper, petroleum, salt, potash, gold, and platinum.
    THE GAMBIA:
About 80 percent of the working population are engaged in agriculture. Rice and millet, as well as cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry, are raised for local consumption. Peanuts are grown primarily for export, which accounts for about three-quarters of total yearly domestic exports. The government has introduced the raising of cotton, sisal, citrus fruits, and tobacco to diversify agricultural production.
    DJIBOUTI:
Djibouti, formerly a French Territory, is strategically located on the Red Sea. Although less than 10% of the land is suitable for grazing, more than half of the inhabitants are pastoralists. Goats and sheep and a smaller number of cattle are raised. The national economy depends upon the port of Djibouti, which serves as a principal seaport of Ethiopia.

In Africa, the AIDS pandemic continues to infect millions. Meanwhile, famine, drought, and in particular nearly ubiquitous warfare have increased the disease's ability to spread. At the end of 2000, over 3 million people had been displaced across the continent as war refugees. And in most African countries, expensive AIDS medication and treatment are simply not affordable or accessible to most people. The following AIDS facts help give an accurate picture:
  • Out of 42 million living with AIDS worldwide at the end of 2002, 29.5 million were from Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Of the 5 million people newly infected with HIV in 2002, 3.5 million were from Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • In 2002, 2.4 million people died of HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. The total number of HIV/AIDS-related deaths in the world that year was 3.1 million.
  • 10 million people aged 15-24 are presently living with HIV in Africa.
  • In four southern African countries, HIV prevalence rose to over 30 percent at the end of 2001: Botswana, 38.8 percent; Lesotho, 31 percent; Swaziland, 33.4 percent; Zimbabwe, 33.7 percent.
    Source: UNAIDS
Angola, emerging from a 27-year civil war, faces a crisis in which refugees who fled from the hostilities are now returning home with what could be a death sentence: HIV/AIDS. This situation is largely attributable to the fact that the countries bordering Angola where many sought refuge during wartime have been ravaged by AIDS. At the end of 2001, each carried a high percentage of AIDS per population: Zambia, 21.5 percent; Namibia, 22.5 percent; Botswana, 38.8 percent, and South Africa, 20.1 percent. So far, it is impossible to assess how many people in 2003 are living in Angola with AIDS, as refuges are still streaming into the country. A February UNAIDS article, however, quotes Angola's health minister, who suggests that HIV has infected at least 1 million people there.
