The Virtual Jewish History Tour
Afghanistan
by Alden Oreck
Afghan Jewry may date back 2,700 years to the destruction of the Temple and the Babylonian exile , but today only two known Jews remain in Afghanistan. Several Jewish Afghan histories are circulating. Early biblical commentators regarded Khorasan (now an Iranian province on the border of Afghanistan) as a location of the Ten Lost Tribes . Today, several Afghan tribes including the Durrani, Yussafzai, Afridi and Pashtun believe they are decedents of King Saul . They call themselves Bani-Israel , similar to the Hebrew, B'nai Israel , meaning the children of Israel . Even some Muslim scholars and writers accept this. The exiled Afghan Royal family also traces its roots to ancient Israel, the tribe of Benjamin specifically. As evidence, they cite Makhzan-i-Afghani , a chronicle published in 1635, in the time of King Jahangir by Khawaja Nimatullah of Herat. The Pashtun, the main Afghan ethnic group and Taliban supporters, also believe they are descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel , and later converted to

86. Taliban History
That young men followed, to the word, the teachings of mullahs was neither unusual nor radical within the context of afghanistan s history.
http://www.unomaha.edu/afghanistan_atlas/talhist.html
Afghanistan Atlas Project
Where did the Taliban come from? The first devotees came from the poverty-stricken refugee camps that sprung up along the Pakistani border during the Afghan-Soviet war. The young men of these camps learned a fierce and fundamental strain of Islam through the madrassas, Islamic schools that dotted the Afghan-Pakistani border. In September 1994, Mohammad Omar, then a mullah and today the leader of the Taliban, created the militia in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar. From the start, its goal was to unite a divided and war-plagued Afghanistan under a strict and unyielding version of Sharia Islamic law as written in the Koran, the life of Mohammed and his followers, and Muslim scholars through the ages.
Initial victories The Taliban's growing power in Kandahar attracted the attention of the Pakistani government, which hired the Taliban in November 1994 to protect convoys traveling between Pakistan and Central Asia. Taliban successes against local warlords attracted more followers and emboldened the Taliban to take control of Jalalabad, the eastern city bordering Pakistan on Sept. 11, 1996. Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, was occupied by the Taliban on Sept. 27, 1996.
Support Following the Soviet withdrawal in 1989, the mujahedeen Islamic warriors once united against the Soviets, divided along ethnic and regional lines.

The Central Intelligence Agency has an almost unblemished record of screwing up every "secret" armed intervention it ever undertook. From the overthrow of the Iranian government in 1953 through the Bay of Pigs, the failed attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro of Cuba and Patrice Lumumba of the Republic of Congo, the Phoenix Program in Vietnam, the "secret war" in Laos, aid to the Greek colonels who seized power in 1967, the 1973 killing of Salvador Allende in Chile and Ronald Reagan's Iran-contra war against Nicaragua, there is not a single instance in which the agency's activities did not prove acutely embarrassing to the United States. The CIA continues to get away with this primarily because its budget and operations have always been secret and Congress is normally too indifferent to its constitutional functions to rein in a rogue bureaucracy. Therefore the tale of a purported CIA success story should be of some interest.

Afghanistan emerged on the map of the world as an independent country on August 19, 1919 from British control. The landlocked country of Afghanistan (Area 652,000 sq km), located in Southern Asia, divided into 30 administrative divisions with population of nearly 26,813,057 (July 2001) is a land of rich hospitality and cultural traditions. In 07 th century AD, Arabs introduced Islam in this region and in next 06 centuries it became the center of Islamic power and civilization. This was the era when great Afghan scientist, Ibn-e-Sina was born at Balkh in 980 AD. In 13 th century AD, Genghis Khan invaded Afghanistan and had destroyed the irrigation system, which turned fertile soil into permanent deserts. This was the same century when Marco Polo crossed Afghanistan in 1273 AD. A century later Muslims reasserted the control over Afghanistan and in early 16

Kabul , which is located in the east-central part of the country at an altitude of about 5,900 feet (l800 meters). The city is connected by road to most Afghan provinces and neighboring countries to the north, south, east and west.
The current boundaries of Afghanistan were established in the late 19th century in the context of rivalry with Britain and Russia. Modern Afghanistan became a pawn in struggles over political ideology and commercial influence. In the late 20th century Afghanistan suffered ruinous effects of prolonged civil war (the 90's), invasion by the Soviet Union (1979), and Soviet military occupation (1979-89). < Back Afghanpedia Table of Content
