June 1996 Soviet military power meets the Afghan warrior society Fifteen years after its commencement and five years after its cessation, the Soviet-Afghan War remains an enigma in the West. Earlier successful Soviet military interventions in the Ukraine (1945-1951), East Germany (1953), Hungary (1956), and Czechoslovakia (1968) and intermittent Soviet military pressure on Poland demonstrated that the stark military power of the Soviet state was an irresistible tool of Soviet political power. The West was thankful that nuclear deterrence maintained the Cold War balance and reluctantly accepted Soviet intervention within its socialist commonwealth and in the Soviet border regions as one cost of that balance. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a repeat of their invasion of Czechoslovakia. For months after the invasion, hardly a political or military expert in the world doubted that Afghanistan was now forever incorporated as a part of the Soviet Empire and that nothing short of a large-scale global war could alter the status quo. And global war was most unlikely as both super powers intended to avoid it. Some Westerners recalled the British experiences in Afghanistan and waited for a Soviet "Vietnam" to emerge, but most Westerners believed that the Soviets would ultimately prevail. Some even projected their European fears to southern Asia and envisioned a bold Soviet strategic thrust from southern Afghanistan to the shores of the Persian Gulf, to challenge Western strategic interests and disrupt Western access to critical Middle Eastern oil.

Afghanistan: History Of 1973 Coup Sheds Light On Relations With Pakistan
By Ron Synovitz Many Afghans old enough to remember the 40-year reign of former King Mohammad Zahir Shah describe his rule as a nostalgic era of peace and prosperity. RFE/RL examines some of the events that led to the 1973 coup against Zahir Shah and the troubled decades that followed. Prague, 18 July 2003 (RFE/RL) This week marks the 30th anniversary of the coup that forced Afghanistan's King Mohammad Zahir Shah from the throne and brought his cousin Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan briefly to power. The Afghan king had gone to Britain for medical treatment in the summer of 1973 when the events leading to Daoud Khan's coup began unfolding. By 17 July 1973, while Zahir Shah and his family were on a reported stopover visit to Italy, then-army commander Lieutenant General Mohammad Daoud Khan seized control in Kabul. Daoud Khan declared Afghanistan a republic, calling the coup a "national and progressive revolution," and then declared himself president. "I, in connection with my various responsibilities, am serving my country. I have always pursued a goal for my people for the people of Afghanistan. In particular, for the deprived and our young, to provide a positive financial and spiritual environment," Daoud Khan said.

A chronology of key events in Afghanistan history: One of the Buddhas of Bamiyan. (AP photo) 329-326 BCE - Alexander the Great invades Afghanistan. Alexander moved his Macedonian troops over the Hindu Kush into Afghanistan. During the grueling journey, his starving men were forced to eat their pack animals. Afghanistan at that time was composed of satrapies, or provinces, in the Achaemenian Kingdom. Alexander conquered the Achaemenians and most of the Afghan satrapies including Aria (in the region of modern Herat), Bactria (Balkh), Sattagydia (Ghazni), Arachosia (Kandahar), and Drangiana (Seistan). But as soon as he left for India in 327 B.C., Alexander felt his hold on the region slip away as many of the satrapies revolted. After his death in 323 B.C.E., the satrapies passed to the Seleucid Empire. 135 BCE-241 AD - Kushans conquer Bactria. Kushan nomads living in central Asia swooped into Northern Afghanistan and conquered Bactria. It was under the Kushan ruler Kanishka (circa. 130 BCE) that Buddhism started to flourish in the region. 300 - 400 AD - Buddhas of Bamiyan built.

But the Afghans were noways content to be ruled by the Feringhee Kaffirs (European infidels), and during the whole of 1840 and '41, insurrection followed on insurrection in every part of the country. History of Afghanistan
After the assassination of his father, Nadir shah, in November 1933, Zahir shah succeeded his throne at the age 19. The next 40 years had seen Afghanistan transformed from a feudal age to the modern nation but the frontier between Pakistan and Afghanistan imposed by British colonial power remained contested because the most important ethnic group of Afghanistan, Pashtuns are living on the both side of frontier. in French in Japanese In 1953, a cousin of Zahir shah, Muhammad Daoud was appointed prim minister. During his prim ministership (1953-1963), Daoud carried out many social reforms such as making optional veils for women. He was in a warm relation with USSR while the relation with USA was chilly. Due to his hard stance on the border issue with Pakistan, Afghanistan was on the verge of a war. Zahir shah ought to ask a resignation of Daoud from the prim ministership in 1963 and Muhammad Yusof became a prim minister. Thanks to the constitution promulgated in 1964 that guaranteed a free election and a freedom of speech, Afghanistan became a democratic country but on university campus, a bitter political fight broke out between pro communist and pro Islamic students. In 1965, pro Moscow Afghan communist party, PDPA (People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan) was founded by Babrak Karmal and Muhammad Taraki but split soon to 2 factions, Parcham (flag) led by Taraki and Khalq (people) led by Karmal.

Afghanistan Friendly, beautiful Afghanistan was once well known on the backpacking circuit as the place to stop for unparalleled hospitality, fantastic food, great hiking and...um...OK, we'll say it, that legendary hashish. Things, sadly, have changed. More than 20 years of war and Taliban rule left the dramatic countryside peppered with landmines and reduced many of the finest monuments and minarets to rubble. The poverty left in war's wake has taken an impossible human toll and encouraged the theft and sale of priceless national treasures. Between 1996 and 2001, everyone was kept under close watch by a skittish and heavily armed military theocracy that could not find legitimacy abroad. Then it became the focal point for the West's wrath because of suspected involvement in the September 11 attacks. The dust has not yet settled, and nobody's burning their burquas just yet. So say a prayer to Allah (or the deity of your choice) for peace, and perhaps beleaguered Afghans will once again be able to welcome the backpacking masses.
    Warning
Afghanistan remains highly insecure, especially outside the capital, Kabul. US-led military operations against remnants of Taliban forces are ongoing. Acts of violence, often targeting foreigners, continue within and outside Kabul.
