Opposition leader still in Afghanistan, brother says
By Amanda Kibel CNN QUETTA, Pakistan (CNN) The brother of opposition leader Hamid Karzai said Tuesday his brother remains inside Afghanistan and continues to organize resistance against the Taliban. Akhmed Walid Karzai said he speaks to his brother several times a day by satellite phone. Akhmed Karzai said his brother was involved in a firefight with the Taliban on Thursday of last week and, although one of his men was injured, Hamid Karzai was able to escape. Last week, Pentagon officials said the United States had gone to the aid of Hamid Karzai, a prominent opposition leader in southern Afghanistan and a Pashtun tribal leader. He is an ally of the former Afghan king Mohammad Zahir Shah. CNN.COM SPECIAL REPORT

Nic Robertson: Food aid arrives in Afghanistan
Correspondent Nic Robertson (CNN) The first convoy of emergency food aid since the terrorist attacks reached Afghanistan's capital city today, where millions of people are facing starvation. The World Food Programme, a United Nations agency that fights global hunger, delivered more than 200 tons of wheat and other supplies to Kabul. CNN Anchor Aaron Brown spoke with correspondent Nic Robertson who is reporting from Quetta, Pakistan. AARON BROWN: Nic Robertson is in Pakistan. He has more on the food aid, the refugees and other developments there. Nic? NIC ROBERTSON: Well, Aaron, the World Food Programme says that this successful delivery today to Kabul will herald more deliveries in coming days. They hope to send another 1,000 tons to Kabul, some 100 tons way across (to the) west of Afghanistan to Herat, where there are 2,000 displaced people, people displaced from central Afghanistan by the drought, completely dependent on food handouts. They hope to get food to them. And also, 900 tons they hope to send in from Tajikistan and Turkmenistan (to northern Afghanistan). They say there are 300,000 people there who could face running out of food by the end of this week. The reason the World Food Programme says that it will get its supplies going again is that they can now guarantee that they can get them out to the people that need it. And that is because the trucks that had been recently busy ferrying people out of the cities to the countryside are now free again.

U.S. senators hope to visit Afghanistan on Asia trip
WASHINGTON (CNN) A bipartisan group of senators was awaiting final clearance to visit Afghanistan as they prepared to depart Thursday for Central Asia. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Nebraska, said the delegation wants to spend a week visiting U.S. forces in the region and meeting with various government leaders about the future of Afghanistan. "We want to know how they're doing," he said of the U.S. forces. "We're with them." He said the senators also want to get a sense of "what's ahead, what they think, get their evaluation, get a sense from them of what we need yet to accomplish." Stops are scheduled in Pakistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Tajikstan and Oman with a return scheduled for January 10. Hagel said the senators want to get into Afghanistan, but the clearance which he described as "normal" probably won't come until the delegation is in Asia. The delegation will be lead by Sens. John McCain, R-Arizona, and Joe Lieberman, D-Connecticut. They will be accompanied by Sens. Jean Carnahan, D-Missouri, Susan Collins, R-Maine, John Edwards, D-North Carolina, Bill Nelson, D-Florida, Jack Reed, D-Rhode Island, and Fred Thompson, R-Tennessee.

The recovery and significance of the inscription, telling a story of the Hindu ruler Veka and his devotion to lord `Siva', was told by leading epigraphist and archaeologist Prof Ahmad Hasan Dani of the Quaid-E-Azam University of Islamabad at the ongoing Indian History Congress here. If historians, preferred to revise the date of the first Hindu Shahi ruler Kallar from 843-850 AD to 821-828 AD, the date of 138 of present inscription, if it refers to the same era, should be equal to 959 AD which falls during the reign of Bhimapala'', Dani said in a paper `Mazar-i Sharif inscription of the time of the Shahi ruler Veka, dated the year 138'', submitted to the Congress.

Blair's promise to Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) British Prime Minister Tony Blair has promised Afghans that the world will not abandon their country again, saying the international community had learned the high price that is paid for neglect. Blair, the first western leader to visit Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban, spoke at the Bagram air base north of Kabul. Blair and wife Cherie arrived on a military flight from Pakistan just before midnight local time (1900 GMT) on Monday to meet Prime Minister Hamid Karzai and British troops at the air base. "Afghanistan has been a failed state for too long and the whole world has paid the price in the export of terror, the export of drugs and finally in the explosion in death and destruction on the streets of the U.S.," he told a news conference at the base, Reuters news agency reported Tuesday. EXTRA INFORMATION In depth: Rebuilding Afghanistan The Blairs were wearing long coats against the freezing cold as they stepped off their blacked-out aircraft and were met by an honor guard and a local military band, The Associated Press reported.

The leverage that technology offers depends on the circumstances which shape combat such as the theater, the opponent and the objective. Guerrilla war, a test of national will and the ability to endure, negates many of the advantages of technology. The Russian Army, and its predecessorthe Soviet Army, fought the most-recent, large-scale counterinsurgencies pitting technologically-advanced mechanized forces against dedicated guerrillas. The Russians are publishing many of their lessons learned now. Although some of these have no direct application to the United States Army, others do and military professionals need to be aware of how other militaries attempt to solve contemporary problems. Soon, however, "mission creep" set in and Soviet forces were locked in a counterinsurgency fight in rugged mountains and deserta fight for which they were neither equipped nor trained. The technologically-superior Soviet Ground Forces were trained to rely heavily on massed artillery, firing normative fires

Key Uzbek bridge to reopen to Afghanistan
Move will help groups in delivery of refugee aid
From Andrea Koppel CNN Washington Bureau TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (CNN) A key bridge between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan will reopen Sunday to speed aid to war refugees as the United Nations says it will begin repatriating refugees back to their homes in the spring. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Uzbek President Islam Karimov announced the Friendship Bridge's reopening Saturday. International aid organizations have long pushed for such a move as a way to speed delivery aid to refugees inside Afghanistan. "We discussed the humanitarian situation, and in that regard the president confirmed that the bridge would open [Sunday] after one last technical check," Powell said at a news conference. International aid organizations say that at least one quarter of Afghanistan's 24 million people are dependent on food assistance after three years of drought. With temperatures dropping this winter in the war-ravaged country, Afghans are also in need of shelter and supplies, the aid groups said.

U.S. serviceman rescued from Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (CNN) U.S. Special Forces Saturday successfully retrieved a U.S. serviceman who was ill in Afghanistan, after a previous attempt Friday ended in the crash-landing of one search-and-rescue helicopter, U.S. military officials said. Officials at the U.S. Central Command would not disclose where the mission took place inside Afghanistan, nor would they say to which branch of the military the serviceman belongs. In the first attempt to retrieve the serviceman Friday, one of two helicopters in the search-and-rescue mission crash-landed in severe weather, the Pentagon sasaid. Four.S. military personnel were hurt, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. The helicopter accident happened around 11 p.m. Friday local time (1:30 p.m. ET), the U.S. Central Command said in a statement.
