Secondary Activities none Welcome. This is where you'll find teaching activities aimed at the primary and secondary age groups, linked to the TES UNICEF Afghanistan appeal. Week by week, we'll be developing themed resources which will help your pupils gain a better understanding of young people's lives in Afghanistan. You will find new activities that cover many aspects of the school curriculum. Primary teachers can adopt these activities into a project about Afghanistan that will run through the summer term. Alternatively, the activities can be used on their own - or to support fundraising initiatives. However you chose to use these materials, we hope that they encourage a global dimension to your teaching and give your pupils the opportunity to become global citizens. UNICEF believes all children are citizens, with rights and responsibilities at a local, national and international level. We are encouraging schools to raise funds for children in Afghanistan, to help them go back to school and receive the education they have a right to.

    GEOGRAPHY
Afghanistan Table of Contents Afghanistan's rugged terrain and seasonally harsh climate have not deterred foreign invaders who coveted this land or sought to cross it on the road to further conquests. The history of Afghanistan is replete with tales of invasion. Yet the rugged landscape combined with the fiercely independent spirit of the Afghan people have seriously impeded and often repulsed would-be conquerors. Afghanistan resembles an irregularly shaped hanging leaf with the Wakhan Corridor and the Pamir Knot as its stem in the northeast. Situated between 29 35' and 38 40' north latitude and 60 31' and 75 00' east latitude, it encompasses approximately 652,290 square kilometers, roughly the size of Texas, stretching 1,240 kilometers from east to west and 565 kilometers from north to south. Afghanistan is completely landlocked, bordered by Iran to the west (925 kilometers), by the Central Asian States of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north and northeast (2,380 kilometers), by China at the easternmost top of the Wakhan Corridor (96 kilometers), and by Pakistan to the east and south (2,432 kilometers). Photo: Chris Johnson/Oxfam Afghanistan is a land-locked country located in Central Asia. It is dominated by mountains that cover two thirds of its surface. The rest of the landscape is made up of desert and fertile plains. The country can be divided into three distinct regions - the Central Highlands, the Northern Plains and the Southwestern Plateau. The Central Highlands This is the most mountainous region of Afghanistan. Here can be found the mountain ranges the Hindu Kush, which sweep from west to east, and the Hazarajat. It is usually dry and hot in summer and freezing cold in winter. Photo: John Fairhurst/Oxfam The Southwestern Plateau Desert covers much of this area making it a very hostile place to live. The soil is very infertile. The Northern Plains The flat plains and foothills make up the northernmost area of the country. This is the most fertile region and it is here that most of the food is grown. Crops include corn, rice, barley, wheat, vegetables, cotton, fruits and nuts. Farmland Photo: Peter Williams/Oxfam Before the conflicts of the last 20 years the country produced enough wheat to feed itself, and was also able to export some foodstuffs to other countries. A third of all farmland has been destroyed in the fighting, however, and now Afghanistan needs to be given additional food to feed its people. For three years the situation has been made worse by severe drought.
