Popular Music and Society
Fall, 1999 by B. Lee Cooper
Theodore Gracyk. Rhythm and Noise: An Aesthetics of Rock. Durham, North Carolina: Duke University Press, 1996. 280 pp. Cloth $49.95. Morehead State University philosophy professor Theodore Gracyk tackles a remarkable number of music-related issues, ideas, and personalities in this brief, well-documented study. He unapologetically justifies rock music as a cultural phenomenon unique to the 20th century. "Existing primarily as a social category," writes Gracyk, "rock eludes or supersedes aesthetics" (207). This conclusion is reached after the author has determined that rock recording is a cooperative artistic venture that is distinctively dependent upon technology. It is also an activity that is time-bound, capsuled in a mediated format, both creative and commercial in nature, and fraught with potential misinterpretation. Gracyk manages to dispatch a variety of criticsincluding Theodor Adorno, Allan Bloom, and Camille Pagliaand to explode numerous production, performing, and lifestyle myths that haunt the rock idiom.

The Aesthetic Aspect
Defining the Aspect x
Kernel: x
  • Harmony, which seems to include or lead to:
    • Coherence
    • Nuance: our ability to see nuances seems to be necessary to our ability to harmonize. (Seerveld makes nuance the kernel of the aspect.)
    • Contrast, surprise: for true harmony that is not mere uniformity there must be some 'disharmony' or a nuanced opposite that is appropriately situated.
    • Or is that 'anti-nuance'?
    • Humour: most humour is based on nuanced surprise.
    • Enjoyment
    • Leisure, fun and rest: the antidote to work, striving and achievement which are of the formative aspect.
rather than, and richer than, the following impoverished versions of the above:
    • Dramaturgy or display,
    • Sameness and uniformity, Equality and identicality (which seem to be a retrocipation to the analytical aspect)
    • Difference (ditto)
    • Connection (which seems to be a retrocipation to the sociall aspect)
    • Doing nothing (a sham on resting)
The following have strong aesthetic component, but are also of other aspects:
    • Creativity (which is formative
    • Beauty (which may be multi-aspectual)
    • Art (which is multi-aspectual, but in which this aspect functions strongly; see

aesthetic (es thet' ik), adj. pertaining to a sense of the beautiful or to the science of aesthetics. having a sense of the beautiful: characterized by a love of beauty. n. 4. aesthetics. a philosophical theory or idea of what is aesthetically valid at a given time and place: . clean line, bare surfaces, and sense of space that bespeak the machine-age aesthetic 6. Archaic. the study of the nature of sensation. aesthetics aesthetics Aesthetics as a noun is a usage that refers to the cultural canons of a people. Although the noun usage can be generally applied to Yoruba and western aesthetics, a problem arises when we attempt to make aesthetic evaluations of specific art objects. We are forced to deal with several questions. We must ask ourselves: What is (or are) Yoruba aesthetics? What is (or are) African American aesthetics? What is (or are) western and American aesthetics? Is there a difference between African (black) and western (white) aesthetics? If so, what is (or are) the difference(s). The answers to these questions force us to recognize the differences between Yoruba concepts of aesthetics and western concepts of aesthetics. Too often western critics see African and Yoruba art as reflected images of a European scientific and socio-political discourse, an enormous error which confuses reflections for reality, impressions for meanings. Thus we read about western "discoveries" of

POTENTIAL 175 TERM PAPER TOPICS
To help you think about a suitable term-paper topic, it may be helpful to look at the following two lists. By matching an item in List A with a corresponding item in List B , you can obtain some possibilities (e.g., “gender and scientific creativity”). Of course, not all pairings have been the subject of psychological research. You should search through PsycINFO to make sure appropriate publications are available. Moreover, you are by no means bound by the topics on these two lists - this is a course on creativity after all!

Genetic Images
1993, Karl Sims Genetic Images is a media installation in which visitors can interactively "evolve" abstract still images. A supercomputer generates and displays 16 images on an arc of screens. Visitors stand on sensors in front of the most aesthetically pleasing images to select which ones will survive and reproduce to make the next generation. It has been exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Ars Electronica, Linz, and the Interactive Media Festival, Los Angeles. Review by Kevin Kelly, Wired Sept. 1994.
Review by George Fifield, Art New England, Feb/March 1994.

The following essay about Genetic Images is from the Centre Georges Pompidou Revue Virtuelle Notebook 5, 1993: Evolution Darwinian evolution is the natural process of variation and selection, often summarized by the phrase: "survival of the fittest." This process, taking place in various media, has led to the creation of many of the complex and wonderful phenomena of our world, including life, consciousness, language, and perhaps even art. Evolution consists of a simple cycle. The most "fit" entities in a population survive and reproduce. The resulting offspring are copies or combinations of their parents but often with random alterations or mutations. Some offspring may be improvements on their parents, and as only the most fit of each new generation of offspring continue to reproduce, the population as a whole can slowly improve.

University of Louisville Overview of the Humanities Doctoral Degree According to a report from the American Council of Learned Societies, “the humanities are once again attracting many of our most talented students, who are aware that the arguments over the ‘canon,’ context, and interpretive method reflect issues of central concern to definitions of what it means to be human" ( Occasional Paper No. 7 , 13). As a reminder of the responsibilities of the humanities, the same report restated them, and they are included here. The humanities continue: to take with the utmost seri ousness their responsibilities to the past: to the excavation of its human treasures, and to their study of safekeeping. But in addition, the humanities continue to expand our sense of the past and to include those who have hitherto remained on the margins of history: the powerless, the illiterate, the dispossessed. to encourage the free discussion of human values, particularly to expose and analyze those values that lie hidden beneath the surfaces of language and of art.

  • Aesthetics and Nature The Bible makes it very clear that a companion volume, The Book of Nature, has a distinct aesthetic dimension. Torrential waterfalls, majestic mountains, and blazing sunsets routinely evoke human aesthetic response as easily as can a vibrant symphony or a dazzling painting. The very fabric of the universe expresses God's presence with majestic beauty and grandeur. Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows forth his handiwork." In fact, nature has been called the "aesthetics of the Infinite." The brilliant photography of the twentieth century has reveled the limitless depths of beauty in nature. Through telescope or microscope, one can devote a lifetime to the study of some part of the universethe skin, the eye, the sea, the flora and fauna, the stars, the climate. And since God's creation is multi-dimensional, an apple, for instance, can be viewed in different ways. It can be considered economically (how much it costs), nutritionally (its food value), chemically (what it's made of), physically (its shape). But it may also be examined aesthetically: its taste, color, texture, smell, size, and shape. All of nature can be appreciated
