PSYCHOANALYTIC AESTHETICS: THE BRITISH SCHOOL by Nicola Glover Home Contents Rationale Search ... Bibliography Conclusion This study has traced one particular trajectory of psycho-analytic theory: the progression from the Freudian paradigm, to the work of Klein and 'post-Kleinians' such as Wilfred Bion, Marion Milner and Donald Winnicott. This account has also emphasised how their clinical and metapsychological contributions have had important consequences for the development of psychoanalytic aesthetics, particularly through the writings of those such as Adrian Stokes, Anton Ehrenzweig, Peter Fuller and Richard Wollheim. In Part One, we examined the shortcomings of Freud's 'neurotic model' of art and his failure to develop his account of the joke mechanism in terms of aesthetic experience and the structural aspects of art - this, however, was explored further by Kris (1952) and Ehrenzweig (1967). As section one emphasised, the 'neurotic model' of art was too reliant on biographical material and thus the critic became more like a detective. This model construed the artwork as a "container" for the artist's desires, repressions, aggressions, and the formal, aesthetic qualities of this "container" were left unaddressed. This approach did not yield insight into the structure of the artwork itself, its purely formal qualities qua object.

Beauty, creativity, aesthetics....
By Bindu Jacob Under the leafy dome of peepul trees, 35 voices soar into the cloudy sky. Effortlessly these voices ``paint for you'' the adventures of the monkey-god, in eight verses of Tulsidas's ``Sankat Mochan Hanuman''. They then shift tune and sing to you the verses of ``Devi Stuti'': ``Ayi giri nandini nanditamedini...'' and conclude with ``Zindagi mein jo kuchh bhi mahaan hai, vah kalpana ya bhaas nahin hai...'' This magic was created not by famous or seasoned maestros but by young performers aged between five and 13, strung together by playwright-director-composer Gopal Sharman. For the past six weeks, these young ones have been learning the finer points of music, theatre and dance under his guidance and supervision. Based on the concept of beauty, creativity and aesthetics, Akshara Theater's summer workshop in classical arts for children was also guided by celebrated actress Jalabala Vaidya. Apart from music, it also gave them training in theatre. This year, it was the fun-filled enactment of ``Alice and Humpty Dumpty'', a play inspired by Lewis Carrol's ``Alice Through the Looking Glass'' which brought the children's latent creative talent out in the open.

    About the Book:
    When the 18th century German philosopher, A.G. Baumgarten first introduced 'Aesthetics' as an academic discipline to deal with the philosophy of beauty, he couldn't possibly have anticipated the controversies that have lately been raised by logical positivists, analytical schools, and even linguists - controversies questioning the validity, the very legitimacy, of a philosophical inquiry into beauty, art and creative processes. Notwithstanding the relatively more recent usage of the term proper, Aesthetics has a millennia-long history: beginning, in the West, with the old-world Greek philosophers, like Pythagoras, Plato, and Aristotle; and, in India, with the Vedic writings, more specifically, Bharata Dr. Shyamala Gupta's book is indisputably a painstaking effort trying to chart the historical progression of aesthetics: both Indian and Western - with focus not only on its evolutionary landmarks, but on its important concepts and theories as well. Schematically structured into two parts, Part 1 of the book examines the status of Indian aesthetics: its theories of rasa and dhvani, and, besides these, of its world view of art. In its Part 2 are traced the development of Western theories of art and beauty, together with their attendant issues appearing, from time to time: from the days of ancient Greek philosophers to contemporary thinkers. Additionally, the authoress also tries to show how art is positioned vis-à-vis morality, science, sport and culture.

    Spirituality for Ministry SPIRITUALITY AND AESTHETICS Aesthetics is the creation and appreciation of beauty. It can find expression in any number of ways, including drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, tapestry, beautiful furniture, music, writing, prose or poetry, dance, computer images, film, scientific formulae, a form of mathematical aesthetics, and supremely in the living of one's life. Exploration Aesthetics is a fruitful way of exploring one's personal being, of entering upon the journey of self-discovery. It helps us gain access to the essence of the body/self, and, particularly, to feelings and emotions. It is also a bodily expression of, and a ritualization of, what is discovered. It helps us escape the prison of the mind, which blinds us to those dimensions of reality that lie beyond mental constructs. Expression Aesthetics is also a means of expression. Exploration and expression are intertwined. One difference between the two is that expression is often public; we express ourselves to others. While the presence of another can sometimes inhibit inner exploration, if it distracts us or subverts our authenticity, it may also assist us. It can do this in two ways. First, the presence of an empathetic other may help us gain access to aspects of the shadow self. The art of the therapist may enhance the artistry of the client, giving depth to their self-understanding and a new competence to their self-management. Second, an audience can sometimes draw the best from us. The success of preaching depends as much on the readiness and participation of those listening as it does on the skill and the preparation of the preacher.

Introduction There is an excellent review of assessment of musical creativity by Webster (1992), which is organized by content analysis of process and product rather than product-process-person-environment. This paper intends to emphasise the four focuses of creativity assessment. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is: 1) to give an overview of research studies in each of Product, Process, Person, and Environment approaches, and 2) to describe a method of assessing creativity in composing music and story-telling by children which was successfully used. The overview should give a clear picture of how creativity in composing music has been assessed and of methods that could be used by teachers and researchers for assessing creativity in composing music. In the Product-Process-Person-Environment approaches, both quantitative and qualitative methodologies can be used. The main concern of this paper is the Product-Process-Person-Environment approaches, which are described below. II. Product-Process-Person-Environment Approaches

    Aesthetics and Economics
    is a pioneering effort at treating aesthetics from the point of view of economic theory, and addresses the contradictions which have arisen from economists' work in this field over the years.
    Starting from an historical review of the treatment of aesthetics in economic thought, Aesthetics and Economics goes through the integration of a number of recent advances in economic thinking with the main topics of aesthetics, from creativity to interpretation.
    The subject is systematically treated on the grounds of a restatement of the optimization analysis on non-consequentialist bases, starting from the Kantian definition of aesthetic judgement up to its contemporary developments.
    A specific information asymmetry characterizing the agents' behaviours arises from the aesthetic qualification of consumption, production and investment processes, thus affecting the usual equilibrium and optimization conditions, resulting in new institutional interventions in the market.
    `Certification' of the aesthetic nature of goods and stocks is needed and gives place to original market strategies and optimization problems.

    Abstract
    Now that we have developed and are introducing media-rich computer human interfaces it is important that we develop a taxonomy that can help us appreciate the power and value of computer systems in order to better quantify them and assess their creative and ethical impact. To date the application of semiosis has been to natural languages and human-human communications. The author suggests that this can now be applied to artificial languages and in particular their use in human computer interactions, imaging and visualisation. The Semiology of Charles Sanders Peirce can be applied to this field and may be used to assess the aesthetic (creative) and ethical implications of computer human interface (CHI), imaging and visualisation technology and the way it is being developed and used.
    The Computer is a Communication Device
    The two potentials that seem to essentially identify the uniqueness of the digital computer system are:
    • communication between two, or more, humans that is mediated and/or enhanced by an "artificial intelligence" and;

    Trevor Pateman
    Abstract: Review discussion of David Best, Feeling and Reason in the Arts . London: George Allen and Unwin 1985 DAVID BEST has written his new book with arts educators in mind, and this explains many of the choices of topic and emphases of argument. Arts educators have often been prey to an easy subjectivism about both artistic creation and response, and to a scepticism about the possibility of assessment contradicted by their own practices. Best is well justified in singling out these views for discussion and makes some good points in attacking them. But Best's book is also an extended study in Wittgensteinian aesthetics. Though this is not foregrounded in the exposition no doubt because Best imagines himself writing for a non philosophical audience it is the Wittgensteinian emphases which I propose to single out for discussion in this review. A few years ago we were all sociologists and Wittgenstein was read as a sort of philosophical sociologist of culture. Thus Peter Winch in The Idea of a Social Science (1958). Now we are all naturalists albeit naturalists who have arrived at their destination via relativism or Humean scepticism and Wittgenstein is read as a naturalist too. Thus Peter Strawson in
