The ARC is especially proud of its wind-tunnel test facility, and of its super-computer, both of which are the largest in Japan. The wind tunnel creates artificial air flow to study aerodynamic characteristics of models of aircraft and spacecraft, monitoring a range of speeds from low to hypersonic. At the Information Technology Center, the super-computer, using numerical simulations, designs and analyzes supersonic-speed experiment devices and spacecraft. It is also developing programs to solve body shake and engine heat phenomenon that affect spacecraft.
There is also a branch of the ARC near Chofu Airfield (Tokyo), which is used to access Oshima and Niijima. This facility uses experimental aircraft and flight simulators to test technology and to develop future aircraft designs.

Aerospace Research and Technology Roundtable
The Roundtable on Aerospace Research and Technology, a joint effort of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board (ASEB) , will bring together high-level representatives from government agencies, the private sector, and universities to address the future needs and direction of U.S. aerospace research and technology. Co-chairs for the effort are Mr. Neil Armstrong, Chairman of the Board, EDO Corporation; and Dr. Wm. A. Wulf, President, National Academy of Engineering. Today, the lack of research funding has the aerospace and air transportation industries looking to the future with some trepidation, wondering: How long will our national air transport infrastructure remain safe and viable? How will we address the long-term challenges of assuring air-travel quality for passengers? Are we making real progress on noise-reduction technologies? Are we compromising our long-term national defense by under-investment in research? Are we providing sufficiently challenging technological advances to attract and retain the best students, engineers, and leadership? These important questions - and the broader implications of current U.S. aerospace research policy - may not be fully recognized and understood by federal policymakers or the American public. For this reason, the National Academy of Engineering has established the Aerospace Research and Technology Roundtable to address both immediate and long-term issues in aerospace research and technology. The roundtable will enable dialogue between the various sectors of the aerospace engineering community, help foster consensus and coordination among government, industry and academia concerning the direction of leadership and policy, and focus the attention of key policy and decision makers in the Administration on current and future critical needs in aerospace research and technology.

As noted in the recently released National Research Council report (Reference 1) , the United States must retain a robust aerospace industry because:
  • aerospace is essential for the national defense; aerospace is a major factor in our economic well being; and aerospace has a significant effect on the quality of life in the United States as one of the key underpinnings of our national transportation infrastructure.
For years the aerospace industry has been the largest sector contributing to a positive trade balance in the United States. The worldwide civil aviation market is estimated at $810 billion over the next decade. This figure does not include significant secondary benefits from related areas such as air traffic control, avionics, etc. The future of aerospace is dependent upon new technology and new concepts. In the past these new technologies resulted in significant benefits to society. The future demands additional societal benefits in areas such as:

Centre for Aerospace Research of the Earth (CASRE) was established in 1992 according to the Decree of Presidium of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as a legal entity at Institute of Geological Sciences of Ukraine. To present time the Centre staff is about one hundred of employees, including 2 Corresponding Members of NAS of Ukraine, 3 Doctors of Sciences (Professors) and 31 Candidates of Sciences (PhDs). The structure of CASRE consists of 4 Depatments: Vadym Ivanovych Lyalko , Corresponding Member of NAS Ukraine, is CASRE Director.
The Centre is specialized on remote sensing (RS) data acquisition and thematic interpretation, focusing on processing of air- and spaceborn images, and preparation of geoinformation products as well. The parameters of energy mass exchange in geosystems and their impact onto very sensitive to natural and technogenic factors various physical, chemical and biological processes responsible for spectral response of natural objects are studying. The models of general spectral signatures for natural objects are elaborated, and their relations with attributes of the environment are evaluated. New techniques and technologies for acquisition and thematic interpretation of RS data are developing using these spectral signatures.
