Nicholas Hoff, pioneering aeronautical engineer, dies
Everyone who has flown safely in the thin aluminum fuselages of today's commercial jetliners owes a debt of gratitude to Nicholas J. Hoff. The well-known aeronautical engineer pioneered the study of the stability of such structures in the 1940s through the '60s. Hoff, a professor emeritus of aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford University, died at his campus home on Monday, Aug. 4, of old age. Born on Jan. 3, 1906 in the small town of Magyarovar in western Hungary, Hoff was eight when his family moved to Budapest. There, he graduated from the same high school as three other great Hungarian scientists: physicists Eugene Wigner and Leo Szilard, and mathematician John von Neumann. "He was one of the last of this group of great Hungarian scientists, including Wigner, Szilard, von Neumann, Teller and von Karman, who came to the United States in the period between World War I and II," said George Springer, chairman of Stanford's aeronautics and astronautics department. As a boy, Hoff was an avid reader, especially of books on geography and history. He read widely in Hungarian and German literature. Private lessons in English and French helped him cultivate his linguistic gifts. He played the violin in the school orchestra. But it was his interest in sports that lead to his career in aeronautics.

Both the Meng and Beng programmes include a week of vehicle testing at the MIRA proving ground. This unique experience is an opportunity to put the theory to test through the correlation of actual vehicle behaviour with simulation models. The tests include: handling and drive-train dynamics, straight-line performance, braking, noise and vibration and a vehicle aerodynamics study in the full-scale wind tunnel. The department supports a student-led team to design and test a new Formula Student race car each year. Both Meng and Beng Students can become involved at a number of levels, though the activity is not compulsory.
    MEng Programme
This extended programme has been developed to allow you to broaden your knowledge of automotive engineering and provide the opportunity to study more specialist topics. The first two years are studied in common with the Beng students, Meng studies commence in Year 3. In the final year the teaching and assessment are conducted at an advanced level with substantial project work being included. Topics emphasise real problems of interest in the industry and relate to the very latest research in this field. Through exchange schemes there are also opportunities to study for part of the final year at external national and overseas research establishments and universities. In order to enhance the effectiveness of professional engineers in the European environment, the study of a European language is optional throughout the programme.

Orville instructed that, upon his death, The Franklin Institute should receive his collection of airfoils and devices. The Franklin Institute was the first scientific organization to give the Wright brothers credit and ranking for achieving sustained powered flight. Today, The Franklin Institute Science Museum has the largest collection of artifacts from the Wright brothers' workshop. Efforts are underway to provide online access to the entire collection. So far, the priority has been on objects that represent 1896 through 1904, the time of the most significant objects. The following text about the collection appeared in the August, 1951 edition of the "Journal of The Franklin Institute." "Dr. Orville Wright deeded to The Franklin Institute in his will and through the Executors of his Estate all of his and his brother's, Wilbur Wright's, original wind tunnel apparatus, model airfoils, test data and drawings of their early airplanes. The collection also includes airfoil models tested at McCook Field during 1910, 1920, and 1921 as well as some of Orville Wright's experimental aviation devices with which he worked during his lifetime. These include a shaper and cutters to prepare wax airfoil models, a special scale, smoke apparatus for wind tunnel use, a bank indicator, an incidence indicator, automatic control devices for wind tunnel and airplane control, an automatic landing device and a cypher machine. In addition to the intrinsic and irreplaceable value of the many items in the collection there exists within them a record of the logical, step-by-step program of engineering research and development by which the Wright Brothers enabled themselves to achieve success in flying their first powered airplane. Therein lies a record of their systematic wind tunnel tests conducted to give them reliable lift, drag, and L/D values to enable them to engineer the design of the first successful airplane. Test results were collaborated by building and test-flying gliders to determine the scale effects from wind tunnel data to full scale wings. It is no little wonder that by such scientific methods two men, then known better for their printing, publishing, and bicycle activities, were first to conquer the art of flight with a heavier than air machine."
