Much has changed since Notre Dame fell to Friends, 46-22, in the opening game of the 1960-61 basketball season. The girls' blue jumpers and white sash belts have been replaced with V-neck tank tops and shorts. Today's style of play celebrates athleticism in ways seldom seen in that inaugural season. Even the rules have changed.
About the only thing that hasn't changed over the past 40-plus years is the venue itself - that game against Friends was the first played on what was then the new Towson campus. It's the same gym our girls use today, and it's showing clear signs of age.
Girls' sports today are flourishing. At Notre Dame, participation in sports and recreation activities is at record levels, and interest in new kinds of activities - martial arts, aerobics, yoga - is growing rapidly. These activities offer a range of important benefits for girls' physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The variety or Notre Dame's sports, fitness, and physical education opportunities fit well with the needs and expectations of today's girls. Now it's time to bring the School's athletics facilities up-to-date as well.
We took major steps in that direction with the 1999 Miracles campaign, which funded a number of changes that greatly benefited outdoor sports. The final step in this comprehensive upgrade is the addition of a new, $5 million Sports and Fitness Center.

Title IX and California law require schools to offer male and female students equal opportunities to play sports. The following must be provided equitably for those participating in athletic programs: equipment, supplies, travel and per diem allowances, access to locker rooms, coaching, academic tutoring, medical services and training facilities. Athletic programs are extracurricular activities offered to students as part of their educational program. Participation in athletic programs helps all students develop self-confidence, self discipline and it enhances their physical and academic performance. To demonstrate that it offers equal opportunities for both males and females to play sports, a school must
show:
  • that the percentage of male and female athletes are about the same as the percentages of male and
    female students enrolled at the school;
    or that the school has a history and continuing practice of expanding athletic opportunities for students of
    the underrepresented gender (usually females);

COURSE NAME: Aerobic Fitness- Individualized Programs INSTRUCTOR: Joel Dering, 581-2400 ( joeld@cameron.edu OFFICE: South Shepler 113 OFFICE HOURS: By Appointment TEXTBOOK: INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS A principle universal to existence is the principle of balance. Human beings are created with an innate desire to pursue balance in all of life. When achieved, perfect balance will allow the individual to maximize performance in all areas of life. This state of perfect balance is termed "total well-being." This pursuit encompasses the very essence of physical education. Aerobic fitness is an essential element in a personal lifetime fitness program focused on "total well-being." The comprehension of the basic concepts regarding aerobic fitness and training to improve aerobic fitness empowers the individual to take control of their personal fitness efforts and direct those efforts in an efficient and educated method. Pursuit of "total well-being" is the pursuit of balance in all of life. Aerobic fitness represents the physical foundation that becomes the spring board toward this worthy pursuit.

Perspective On Athletics
I am responding to the article "Fight, Choate, Fight!" in the Fall 1996, issue of the Choate Rosemary Hall Bulletin. For a long time I have wanted to write about my experience in athletic programs and offer a dissenting view on sports in our schools. My starting point is the notion, expressed in the article, that: Participation is really the linchpin of [Choate Rosemary Hall's] philosophy around which coaches and athletes work to teach and learn skills, compete fairly, handle wins and losses with equal grace, and have fun in the process. Along the way, athletes develop self-discipline, teamwork, and fairness. In other words, sports build character . . . While I agree this statement describes an ideal, and I can believe some who participate in sports may come close to attaining that ideal, my experience was quite different. As a child and an adolescent, I was small and underweight for my age and was neither strong nor robust; in other words, I was not built for athletics. In addition, I spent my formative years at a British school in Caracas, Venezuela, so the American sports tradition was alien to me. I did not grow up with baseball bat or hockey stick in my hand. My health was excellent, and I did very well academically. But I had no talent for sports and, consequently, no interest in competing. In practical terms, this meant I had little to offer any sports team of which I was a member. Coaches demonstrated no interest in me, because I did not perform well and showed no potential of ever doing so. From a coaching standpoint, I was the weak link on the team, a liability. In my case, any teaching of sports skills (and the values associated with athletics) was perfunctory at best. Never having done well and never having had a coach who was really willing to work with me, I had no motivation to learn about sports.

Orthopedic Sports Medicine
send me this paper

A 16 page paper discussing the state of evolution of orthopedic sports medicine. It often carries the remnant of the skepticism of years past, when those involved just seemed not to fit anywhere. The physicians involved in orthopedic sports medicine often were looked on as M.D.s that simply couldn't compete in the world of 'real' medicine, and the lay people involved as trainers and support personnel to the performing athletes were regarded as would-be athletes with the same disabilities. But times are changing. Orthopedic sports medical practitioners are being viewed as competent as any other M.D. in any other specialty, and sound research is contributing to the overall well of knowledge regarding injury, treatment options and patient outcomes. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

http://www.dsni.co.uk/projects.htm
PROJECTS Disability Sports NI has been involved in a range of innovative projects and initiatives since it was launched in February 1998. Some key achievements are outlined below: Northern Ireland Disability Sports Directory Produced to coincide with the launch of Disability Sports NI in February 1998, the 55 page publication provided for the first time in Northern Ireland a comprehensive range of information on sporting opportunities available to people with disabilities. The Belmont Foto Services Awards Scheme An awards scheme run by Disability Sports NI and sponsored by Belmont Foto Services. By 1999 the Fund had successfully distributed over £50,000 to a range of clubs and organisations to help support the establishment of local disability sports initiatives. BT Athletics Project A UK-wide project designed to encourage more disabled people to become involved in athletics as well as supporting the development of more talented athletes. In Northern Ireland the project enabled Disability Sports NI to run hundreds of coaching sessions in special schools and disability clubs, to organise training camps for elite athletes as well as the organisation of annual athletics championships for people with learning disabilities.

Athletic and Fitness Center On This Page: Having built a 110-year-old legacy of excellence in education, The Hotchkiss School is proud of its long-standing commitment to the development of intellectual curiosity complemented by an equally rigorous emphasis on developing physical well-being in its students. Children learn best when their daily routine consists of intensive academic pursuits from early morning to mid-afternoon, vigorous athletics before dinner, and activities and study opportunities in the evening.
To this end, the non-academic offerings at Hotchkiss must complement, support, and accommodate this formula. Although additions and improvements have been made in recent years to some of the existing athletic facilities, increased enrollment following coeducation, the expansion of girls' athletics, and an explosive interest in recreational fitness have rendered our current facilities inadequate.

UPPER SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH
The upper school physical education curriculum emphasizes a diverse offering of fitness, lifetime, and team sport activities. By promoting healthy lifestyles through planned, regular exercise, students obtain the skills and knowledge to continue their physical activity in the years ahead. Activities may include: golf, weight lifting, aerobic fitness, hiking, power walking, tennis, badminton, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. The goal of health instruction at Cary Academy is to promote health literacy. Using traditional classroom resources, as well as the Internet and appropriate software, each student develops the ability to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services. Students can then use these services and information in ways that enhance their health. The vast array of health resources in the community serves as a helpful adjunct to the course. The program provides the necessary foundation to enable students to make sound decisions regarding their physical and emotional well being.
