Curriculum Physical Education is a popular and strongly supported subject at Beaconsfield High School and we are proud of our Sportsmark Award for the excellent provision of sport. The school has superb outdoor facilities, including an Astroturf hockey pitch and three netball courts. In summer, these surfaces are transformed into eleven tennis courts. The floodlights covering both areas give girls the added opportunity of playing in extra-curricular time throughout the winter. In addition, the school field is used for football, rugby and athletics. There is a strong tradition of dance through the school. Two years ago many girls were involved in a highly successful gym and dance show and an equally successful dance tour to Italy. Key Stage 3 Games - In Years 7, 8 and 9, girls study the three families of games - invasion, net and striking. In the autumn and spring terms, an equal amount of time is given to netball and hockey. The overall standard of performance and understanding reached by the end of Year 9 in both of these invasion games is exceptionally high. Gymnastics - The girls study gymnastics throughout Key Stage 3, easily covering the requirements for the National Curriculum, developing their individual skills and their ability to plan, perform and evaluate sequences with and without apparatus. They also learn to work as a member of a group.

Athletics Program Visitation supports one of the strongest athletic programs in the area and is a member of the Independent School League. Our students have many opportunities to participate at the Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels in a wide variety of sports. With teams that are consistently competitive across the board, the school has been fortunate to claim many ISL Championships over the years. Visitation is also proud that many of its student-athletes have been recognized as ISL All League and Washington Post All-MET players over the years. Georgetown Visitation’s Fisher Athletic Center, which opened in 1998, is an award-winning sports complex that provides excellent facilities for all students to enjoy. Its features include: class rooms, a weight and aerobics room, training room, visiting and home locker rooms, student lounge, and a gym with seating for 500. With the exception of our swim team, Georgetown Visitation’s student-athletes play all of their home games on campus.

Physical fitness, sportsmanship, teamwork, the development of athletic, social, and emotional skills, and an appreciation for an active, healthy life are goals of the physical education program at every grade level. Athletics promote our mission with our young people through development of self-confidence and opportunities for leadership and individual excellence. Our facilities provide two spacious gymnasiums, a dance/aerobics studio, two outdoor swimming pools, five acres of playing fields on campus, and an additional 10 acres on our Highland Street property. Offerings include, but are not limited to, soccer, field hockey, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, softball, and tennis. Athletics promote our mission. It is our firm belief that the lessons all young people learn through athletics prepare them for experiences later in life; by focusing on the process of playing, students learn how to become winners in life, not just on the fields.

Physical education and individual team sports are a significant part of the RCDS program at all levels, and they play an important role in shaping the overall experience of an RCDS student. In the fall of 2000, the new 45,000 square-foot Nelson Athletic Center was completed. This new facility supports both the physical education and athletic programs by providing two basketball courts, four locker rooms, four squash courts, a 2,300 square-foot fitness center, and an athletic training room. Lower and Middle School Athletics
All students in Kindergarten through Grade Eight have physical education or team practice daily. In Lower and Middle School physical education, emphasis is placed on building physical skills, encouraging good sportsmanship, and learning and following rules and regulations in individual and team sports. The athletic program of the Middle School focuses on the development of team sports and on the individual and cooperative skills needed. Intramural in grades 5 and 6, the program shifts to interscholastic team sport emphasis in Grades 7 and 8, with physical education offerings also available. Sports, represented by separate girls' and boys' teams, include soccer, basketball, ice hockey, squash, tennis and lacrosse. Girls' field hockey and softball are offered, as well as boys' football, wrestling, and baseball. (Football and field hockey in Grades 5 and 6 are available on a limited interscholastic basis, also.) The opportunity for a team experience, and the chance to look ahead to sports in high school are positive elements of the RCDS interscholastic program at this level.

The athletic program at The Williams School provides students with the opportunity to develop individual leadership qualities and self-confidence, as well as physical competence. Students increase their mental and physical skills, body control, endurance, and strength by competing with other students in both intramural and interscholastic events. It is the hope of the Athletic Department that these experiences will foster good sportsmanship and lead to a lifetime participation in some kind of sports activity.
