Life at Andrews doesn't end with the school day. Opportunities to participate in athletic activities and personal fitness programs are an important part of learning self-reliance and confidence. Lessons learned on the athletic field and in the weight room are carried over into every other aspect of student life. We are proud of our strong tradition of athletic participation for our students. Our athletes participate in individual and team competition through our membership in the Private School League. Our athletic facilities include 6 practice fields, tennis courts, and new Field House that features a gym, 3 fitness rooms (aerobic, weight and cardio-fitness) and 2 locker rooms. Andrews' "no cut" policy promotes participation, making it possible for all interested students to be part of a team. There are sports for every season at Andrews and an activity for every ability. In addition, extracurricular options include equestrian sports, skiing, hiking and aerobics. Our coaches play a major role in the development of athletes in their charge. They help students develop leadership skills, promote teamwork and instill sportsmanship. These values apply not only to athletics, but to life.

ADVERTISE Media Kit List Rental Telemarketing Article Reprints What’s New in Locker Rooms? by Robbin M. Rittner-Heir A greater number of female students participate in athletics, which has added another challenge to the design and renovation of school athletic facilities. Think of a school’s team sports equipment and you think of shin guards, ball gloves, basketballs, hockey sticks, tennis racquets, golf clubs, cleats and that’s just for the girls. The faces of middle and high school athletes have changed and, these days, more of them wear lipstick. Schools built before the 1970s had the requisite locker rooms for the mandated physical education classes for students of both sexes. While boys had lockers and the proverbial ‘‘gang’‘ shower room, girls were left with smaller facilities, generally consisting of cubicle showers to maintain modesty and privacy, a small dressing area and a few lockers.

All school Museum of Fine Arts Collaboration: Beginners - Grade 6 Lower School Teacher Training Institute: Since 1977, graduate students from Lesley College have participated in a joint master's degree program, working with the head teachers in our Lower School, to prepare for positions in elementary and middle school classrooms in public and independent school settings. Wheelock College and other area colleges have sometimes participated in the program as well. Our youngest students enjoy the benefit of these gifted teachers-in-training. Project Reason (Grade 5): For over 50 years, the school has offered a summer day camp to students from pre-school age through Grade 6. Older students may also participate in the camp as counselors-in-training. The camp program, divided into age-appropriate segments, includes swimming, a variety of other sports, music, dramatics, art, woodworking and computers. Grades 7-12 An integral part of the Middle School program, the Co-curriculum includes core programs taught by advisors on such topics as group dynamics, communication, current events and social issues. The goals of the program include: to prepare students to participate meaningfully in an increasingly complex and diverse world; to teach students how to handle conflict, ask evocative questions, and advocate for themselves; and to prepare students for healthy living and an understanding of the value of nutrition and exercise.

LOWER SCHOOL
Every student in Beginners through Grade 5 participates in a Physical Education class instructed by our faculty. In the fourth and fifth grades the program introduces students to a variety of skills in anticipation of team sports. The fundamental aspects of teamwork, sportsmanship and competition are taught in a familiar and safe environment. Plans are currently being made to include a basic Health component for the upper grades. Every one of our 6th grade students participates in an interscholastic program. The teams practice in the morning during school and generally play their games after school either on Tuesday or Thursday.
Participation and enjoyment continue to be the cornerstones of the Lower School experience. At this stage it is crucial that the students are playing and having fun. We also want to ensure that the girls and boys are learning the appropriate fundamentals at this stage of their school life.

Philosophy The philosophy of the Athletic Department is directly related to the mission statement of the school. The Athletic Department offers programs that foster the same values of integrity, respect, responsibility, and participation that is embodied in the classroom. The goal of our coaching staff is to foster a positive attitude about learning and challenge our athletes to achieve their highest potential in all aspects of their development. Participation is an integral part of the athletic philosophy at both the Middle and Upper School levels. At the Middle School level, participation on either an interscholastic team or in physical education is required every season. In the Upper School, activity/athletic participation is required during two seasons every year, with three being encouraged. With multiple levels of teams for almost all of our sports, there is a place for all of our athletes’ varied needs and abilities. The Athletic Department feels that all students should have the opportunity to participate in interscholastic athletics at some level during their high school years. The lessons that can be learned from athletic participation are invaluable and help in the overall development of the individual. Lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, competition, and how to win and lose gracefully are an integral part of each team in our athletic program.
