Aerobic exercise

It is important for everyone to get aerobic exercise at least three to five times per week for 20 to 60 minutes. To keep your exercise routine fresh and fun, vary your activities whenever possible. Aerobic exercises are very effective in strengthening the heart and lungs, strengthening the organ's ability to contract. Stronger contractions mean an improved, stronger blood flow, in turn making a body better equipped for exercise. It is also a good aid for loosing weight. As beneficial as aerobic exercise is, however, it's not enough to add muscle and shape to your body. Not all sport activities provide an effective aerobic workout. If you participate in a sport where the action is not continuous, or where players are often substituted in play for short periods of time, you may need more aerobic activity to balance out your fitness routine or to achieve weight loss.

P eople follow three paths to good health: doctor, diet, and exercise. Our path to the doctor involves the greatest expense, $1,035 billion in 1996, or almost 1/7th of the Gross National Product. Over 60% of these visits involved medication, and there were over 70 million surgeries (source CDC). However, there would be less expense, trauma, and tragedy if we prevented many of these medical problems. According to the American Medical Association, 60% of Americans are physically inactive. According to U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, the number of people at risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and stroke is increasing, and 50% of Americans are overweight. He said that improved nutrition along with 30 minutes of exercise five times a week could reduce cardiovascular illnesses and deaths by 50% and colorectal cancer by 40% (source CNN, June 11, 1999).

Weight training or aerobic training?
This article aims to introduce the concept that exercise types (resistance and cardiovascular training) have inherent pro's and con's. To do this we will explore different areas of fitness asking the question "Which exercise type improves ..."
Fitness and stamina
Traditional weight training does very little to improve fitness. Traditional weight training calls for intense bouts of weight lifting followed by a prolonged rest between 'sets' to recuperate before repeating the same lift. However, weight training in another form - that of circuit training - can reduce these rest periods by allowing one muscle to recuperate as another muscle is worked. This method of weight training has been known to develop a limited level of stamina.
Cardiovascular (CV) training on the other hand works the heart, lungs and circulatory system very hard indeed. With CV exercise the harder we work, the greater the demand placed up on our hearts and thus the greater the fitness benefits achieved.
