Lesson: RECOVERY HEART RATE: Recovery Heart Rate is a measure of how quickly your heart returns to pre-stress levels. In this lesson we will focus on the recovery of the heart after the stress of exercise. In general, people with a higher level of fitness have a faster drop in their heart rate from the effort of exercise than people who are not fit. When fitness professionals are assessing recovery heart rate the recovery rate is, typically, measured for one to two minutes after the end of the exertion. Complete Recovery Heart Rate is the time between when you stop exercising and the time it takes for your heart rate to return to the pre-exercise level. Complete Recovery Heart Rate may require as long as an hour after the end of the exertion. In addition to the role played by becoming more fit we can mindful recovery to improve, to some extent, the rate at which the body recovers from the stress of exertion. In other words, we can use mental biofeedback to consciously regulate our recovery rate. Mindful recovery is an excellent skill to develop to deal with stressful situations. Mindful recovery involves visualization, deep (abdominal) breathing, comfortable body positioning and the use of other relaxation techniques to purposefully lower your heart rate as rapidly as possible. With practice students can develop their own coping strategies for managing their heart rate and their stress level in a variety of situations.

Curriculum Development OUR IDEAS ABOUT TAKING NANOSCALE SCIENCE TO THE CLASSROOM See examples of other curriculum and educational projects At this time, our curriculum is still in the development and testing stage. Please check back periodically to look for downloadable lesson plans and activities! Rationale
Lessons within the curriculum address many Virginia SOLS from Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra I, and Algebra II. These are noted specifically at the beginning of each lesson.
Often students fail to realize the significance of science in their lives. They may hear about large sums of money spent on seemingly esoteric research and question the value of the results. Nanoscience is particularly at risk for this. This curriculum allows students to connect very specific scientific research to larger social issues in their lives and to explore the promise and perils of nanotechnology. They see how the newest technology (in this case, the Atomic Force Microscope or AFM) changes the way that scientists do research. Not only do students do science, they also make connections between their own observations, observations of practicing scientists, and public policy decisions that affect their daily lives.
The lessons of this curriculum employ a variety of pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning from small-group work to class discussion to individual investigation. Many lessons suggest alternative approaches which allow the teacher to tailor the lesson to her unique situation. Students are actively engaged in making meaning in all of the lessons. They work in groups, use the internet for research, and generate and answer their own questions. Most of the activities use everyday materials, but pertinent safety issues are addressed in the individual lesson plans.

Investigation: How does well water compare to city water in terms of bacterial analysis?
PUBLIC DRINKING WATER CONTAMINATED! This headline has appeared in various forms across the United States. There is an increasing concern that the drinking water in the United States is not as healthy as most of us would like to believe. Approximately 1/4 of all the people on this planet do not have access to safe drinking water. In this activity you will compare the bacteria amounts in drinking water from local wells and city water.
    Procedure
    STEP 1:
Collect water samples from area wells and the city water supply in sterile collecting bottles.

    STEP 2:
Label the Petrifilm plates at the top with your name, date, and water source.

    STEP 3:
Add 1ml. of sample to the center of the Petrifilm. (Do not raise the cover of the Petrifilm until ready to plate the sample.)

    STEP 4:
For the aerobic bacteria, the cover is dropped not rolled. For the E. coli and Coliform Bacteria carefully roll down the top. Avoid capturing the air bubbles between the film and the cover sheet of the petrifilm.

    STEP 5:
Carefully spread the sample using the spreader (make sure and use the correct side) by gently presssing the center of the spreader to distribute the inoculum over the circular area.
