Lesson plans Age 3 Ages 4 and 5 Ages 6 and 7 ... Go to home page This section of the Teacher's Toolbox includes a series of lesson plans for each age group including 3-year-olds, 4- and 5-year-olds, 6- and 7-year-olds and 8- to 10-year-olds. These lesson plans have been developed through extensive pilot studies and reviewed by USPTA professionals. Many of the games and drills used have been submitted by USPTA members who have successful Little Tennis programs. The lesson plans are designed for beginner players in each age group, and are formatted to include warm-up, motor, racquet and playing skills in a ratio appropriate to the respective age group. For instance, lesson plans for 3-year-olds contain mostly motor skill games, with minimal racquet skill drills. Those for 8- to 10-year-olds are balanced toward racquet and playing skills. While the lesson plans themselves provide a quick and expert progression of drills and games to accomplish training objectives, many more (drills and games) are provided under their own menu headings. Tennis teaching professionals can substitute these to add variety or preferred training. Note: The lesson plans are intended only as guidelines for teaching professionals. Professionals may use them as is or alter them to fit their own style or a particular class by substituting drills and games from those sections of the web site and/or additional resources.

Action Plan lesson 1 Ecology of oysters Pretwentieth century Like most aquatic and marine aerobic organisms, oysters are stimulated by high oxygen levels.
http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/physio/schools/cas/h2olesson.html
RIVER LAB Lesson Plans Lesson 1 Ecology of Oysters Lesson 2 Oyster growth and water quality Lesson 3 Susstainable Oyster Reefs Bottom of Page Rationale: The twenty-first century has granted us the opportunity to reverse the unsustainable practices of the past 300 years. Recent times have shown a dramatic improvement in water quality due in large part to increased waste water treatment, stronger legislation and decreased waterfront industries and farming. The newly expanded Hudson River Park provides the public with greater access to the water. With this access comes the opportunity to for citizens to act as stewards in restoring this precious resource. Pier 40, two blocks west of City-As-School High School, is located within the Hudson River Park which extends along the waterfront from the Battery to 59th Street.
River Lab is a program that brings students to the Hudson River Estuary for science education and recreation. The program includes a water quality research component, a boathouse internship and rowing. By exposing students to the Hudson River, New York City's largest open space park, we hope to increase stewardship and awareness. Throughout the course students will be monitoring the growth of the Eastern Oysters (Crassotrea virginica), which will serve as bioindicators that represent the "health" of the estuary system. The three lessons included in the action plan are taken from an eight week science course that was designed for high school juniors and seniors whom have previously taken biology. The lessons may be adapted for biology, environmental science, or social studies courses from grades 6-12.

http://www.kingsharvest.com/catalog/physicalfitnesscoop.html
Physical Education for Homeschool Co-ops and Private Schools This curriculum manual is written by the same author as Homeschool Family Fitness , Dr. Bruce Whitney. He is a homeschool dad with years of experience teaching physical education at the elementary, secondary and college levels. With the same depth of content and instruction in mind, Dr. Whitney has created a program for groups that is simple to implement and yet comprehensive in its instruction. This course, like Homeschool Family Fitness will lead students into lifelong habits that promote fitness and health. The guide begins with reasons and research to support the importance of physical education in a homeschool program, how to get started, classroom rules and expectations, classroom management, and ways to affordably acquire and store equipment. Skills concepts and lessons are broken down by age and/or grade level ability (Please note that while certain skills will be geared to the ages of students, Dr. Whitney firmly believes that it is essential for children to learn to play with children younger and older than themselves, as it provides opportunities to learn leadership, patience and unselfishness.), so parents or teachers have a good idea where their students should be performing. Lessons are reinforced with labs that teach specific skills and all are organized into units that cover the fundamental skills and concepts of a particular sport or physical activity. Lesson plans require a minimal time of preparation. Each plan lists the purpose, equipment needed, activities and the recommended time allotted for each activity. There are lesson plans and activities for all students K-12 and it should be simple to use over and over again each year, as the students grow older, grow stronger and gain proficiency. Literally the only PE curriculum your homeschool support group needs. A King's Harvest TOP PICK!

Homeschool Family Fitness
***NEWLY UPDATED for 2003-2004 School Year***

(20 new pages of high quality p.e. instruction) Sometimes we have to search literally for several years to find curriculum that we are confident about using with our own children and recommending to you. The area of Physical Education represents one of those several-year searches. We are so excited to have finally found a Christian resource that understands the dynamics of a "real" family with limited resources, equipment and numbers for "building a team"! The curriculum is written by a homeschool dad with years of experience teaching physical education at the elementary, secondary and college levels. And believe me, it's no st-t-r-ret-t-ch-ch to call this a complete curriculum. I've never seen a program that compares. Dr. Whitney lays out a 40-week physical education plan that covers the areas of: muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and aerobic fitness, plus nutrition, anatomy, and more. Parents are provided with research and information on the importance of physical education in a home school program, and on how to use this curriculum. There are lab sheets, exercise charts, fitness contracts, log sheets, actually an appendix full of reproducible recordkeeping material for the course. Students will take quizzes and tests over knowledge gained, as well as being trained for a lifelong habit of fitness. Activities, exercises and games are included for indoors and outdoors, rainy days, cold days and wet days. This homeschool dad has thought of everything!

aerobic in nature. Students had 5 minutes of warmup, 20 minutes of activity, and 5 minutes of cool-down. Physical educators were oriented to the lesson plans
http://www.unc.edu/depts/chic/interven.htm
School-based Interventions: Two school-based interventions have been implemented as part of the CHIC studies: One to third and fourth graders and one to sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Both interventions had classroom and physical activity components. Both interventions lasted 8 weeks. Students were tested prior to starting the interventions and immediately after finishing the interventions. Yearly follow-up testing has been done on each group as funding has allowed. 3rd/4th Grade intervention The first intervention, given to 3rd and 4th graders, was actually testing two different types of interventions. The 18 participating elementary schools were assigned to one of three "intervention" groups:
  • a Risk-based , small group intervention; a Population-based , large group intervention; and no intervention ( control group).
  • Risk-based (small group) intervention:
    • Delivered only to those with risk factors for future heart disease [ Risks are defined elsewhere] Delivered in groups of 6 to 8 children by nurse educators or certified physical educators Groups met 2 times per week for "education" sessions but 3 times per week for physical activity
The small group intervention, also called a risk-based intervention, was delivered to groups of 6 to 8 children at a time. Students with risk factors left their regular classroom to spend 30 minutes, two times per week with a nurse educator. Students may also have spent 30 minutes three times per week with a certified physical educator.
