Education and work Adult education Holiday jobs Military service Study circles ... Upper secondary school Adult education Many people go to colleges of adult education to retake subjects they missed or did not do well enough in at school. The reason for doing this is often that they need a particular subject to qualify for university or college. Holiday jobs Many young Swedes from the age of 16 work in their long summer vacation. Many also work evenings and at weekends during term-time. Union rules regulate minimum wages and the number of hours you can work at different ages. Young people are also protected by law from dangerous or very demanding work and unsocial working hours. Military service Sweden is a neutral, non-aligned country which does not have a professional army. All male Swedish citizens must enlist for military service. It is voluntary for girls. Basic training lasts between 3 and 15 months, depending on what you do. More or less all young men used to do military service, but today, because of cuts in defence spending, fewer and fewer young men are actually called up (52,000 in 1986 compared with 17,000 in 2001).

People to Meet
On the Internet, discussion groups are a great way meet people who share common interests. They provide a way to share information, ask questions, solve problems and connect with others. Listservs are an email-based discussion format and there are many of these available. We have highlighted some education and distance education listserv groups that you might consider joining, however, it is not a comprehensive list. Please also visit http://edweb.gsn.org/lists.html , which contains a larger list of listservs in the area of general education, k-12 education, educational technology and education reform. Here you will also find background information how to subscribe, send messages and unsubscribe from listservs.
We have also included some organizations and/or associations which offer their members different services related to educational technology and distance learning.
A major focus for adult learning is for adults to acquire literacy skills. LEARNER is a moderated literacy discussion group for adult learners to practice their newly learned reading and writing skills by posting messages to the list which can be read by other new learners. To subscribe to this list, send a message to majordomo@world.std.com
