Therapist for Child with Reactive Attachment Disorder
Related page: Attachment Disorder Feb. 2003 Can anyone recommend a good therapist who works with children/adoptees who have mild RAD (reactive attachment disorder)? I have a daughter with RAD and we both have been seeing Debra Bartenstein (633-1563) who has been very helpful. I can recommend her highly. Additionally, I found the ''only'' two therapists in the Bay Area who are truly specialized in RAD. I would recommend calling them too. They are Virginia Keeler Wolf at 510-339-9363 and Susan Love who's number I cannot find but she should be in the phone book and Virginia Keeler-Wolf has her number too. Just another note: I found RAD workshops extremely helpful. Unfortunately very little is offered in the Bay Area, but CATTE in the Sacramento Area puts on workshops regularly and they are excellent (and affordable). Also, PACT is putting on a workshop on attachment soon so you might want to give them a call. If you'd like to talk some more or maybe even have playdates with a comfortable RAD mom, call me. Best wishes.

    May 2000
This handbook is dedicated to Giancarlo Nicoletti, whose short life demonstrates the fragility and importance of taking care of our children and providing resources to those who orchestrate their care.
    Download the Entire Handbook (PDF)
    Preface
An announcement of the intention to develop this handbook and the need for faculty to sign up for confidential interviews was sent to faculty during the summer of '99. A. Tracy Hassett of Human Resources conducted the interviews and compiled the responses. A copy of the questions asked can be found at the end of this handbook. Comments from the ten faculty interviewed are compiled here: six women and four men. They come from many different departments, and had their children both recently and in the more distant past. We consider this to be a living document - one that should reflect new experiences and stories to share. If you have comments or additions, please contact Tracy Hassett or myself. All additions will be confidential. We will also put this document on the web, thereby creating an even better resource for our community, and the world.

After the first year of the project four more desktop units were purchased. Approximately A$450,000 (where A$1 is 0.6 ECU or US$0.75) funding was provided by the South Australian Health Commission in November 1993. The aims of the telemedicine project were to assess the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of telemedicine as a means of improving the quality of patient care, to determine the need for the further education of dialysis staff, and to monitor dialysis processes and equipment at sites remote from the main dialysis institution. These aims were later expanded, based on early experiences with the project, to include the development of strategies to accelerate user adoption and to maximise both the number of users within the Unit and the breadth of telemedicine applications. An additional aim was to assess the value of desktop videoconferencing for clinical consultations.

Did you hear the news about Angelina Jolie adopting a baby and Rosie O'Donnell coming out of the closet as a gay parent? Angelina Jolie and her hubby, Billy Bob Thornton, have adopted a seven month-old baby boy from Cambodia. Angelina's son is with her in Africa where she's working on a movie. Although the new parents couldn't be happier with their adopted son, Maddox, the couple can't bring him into the US at this time. The US Embassy hasn't approved the adoption and Maddox doesn't have an American visa so he's not allowed into the country. In December of 2001, the US government banned the adoption of babies from Cambodia cuz of illegal activity involving the sale of babies to orphanages (and in some cases kidnapping.) Adoption applications that were submitted before December are being processed (on a case by case basis) to make sure the kids really are orphans. According to US Ambassador, Kent Wiedemann, it could take between a couple of weeks to a couple of months before Maddox's case is sorted out. There are a lot of kids in Cambodia who need a home. What will happen to these children now that the US has banned adoption from Cambodia? I don't think there should be

The cost of secrecy - post adoption issues
    Author:
Margaret McDonald, Post Adoption Resource Centre
Originally published/presented: The child as a client - The adoption perspective conference, Griffith University, April 1995
    Introduction
So that we're all clear as to what we are talking about it may be helpful to start off with some dictionary definitions: From the Shorter Oxford Dictionary
  • Secrecy: The quality of being secret or of not revealing secrets; the action, habit or practice of keeping things secret.
  • Secret: Kept from the public knowledge or from the knowledge of persons specified. From the Macquarie Dictionary
  • Secrecy: The state of being secret or concealed; privacy, retirement, seclusion.
  • Secret: Made or negotiated without the knowledge of others. All of these definitions show us different aspects of secrecy, of themselves carrying no value judgement. We are all aware of useful and necessary secrets, and that the action, habit or practice of keeping things secret can be in both personal and professional relationships a most valuable attribute. From the title of my paper you will gather that I plan today to speak principally about the adverse effects of secrecy, basing these observations of our practice at the Post Adoption Resource Centre and the experience of our many clients who comment on the oppressive influence of secrecy in their lives.

Adoption Issues Adopted children may grow up not knowing many things that others take for granted. For instance, who their birth parents are, who they look like. Are their parents right or left-handed? These are often unanswered questions that leave blanks in the history of their life. Adopted children often have mixed feelings about who they are. They may wonder:
