The Australian (Australian daily)
May 01, 2004 DAVID Ford, an Australian high school teacher who worked as a volunteer chemistry and biology adviser at Royal Phnom Penh University, says that he did not sleep with underage Cambodian boys but it was not for lack of opportunity. On his daily walk from his small first-floor apartment to the restaurants along the Mekong River, he says he would often be approached by young men asking if he wanted to "dek" or "sleep" – shorthand for paying for sex. "It was depressing, a sign of the desperation and poverty that these kids would do that," he tells The Weekend Australian. Eventually the boys stopped asking – deterred by his refusals – and were happy instead to sell him a newspaper. In the five years Ford, originally from NSW, has lived in Cambodia, he says he befriended some of the teenagers, and occasionally they came to his home to practise English, play computer games and empty his refrigerator. But in early March, while riding his motorcycle to work, he was intercepted by a bank of police officers who "invited" him for questioning. Two weeks later, he celebrated his 50th birthday in Prey Sar prison as a judge began an investigation into allegations he had sexually abused underage boys.

In Texas, there are thousands of children waiting for permanent homes. These children have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Over 60% of these children are children of color, with the highest percentage being African American and are typically between the ages of 4-14. Most are brothers and sisters needing to be placed together."

Adoption Issues
Multiculturalism is a popular phrase these days and, for those of us who have adopted children from China or elsewhere, we must understand the meaning of being multicultural and be sensitive to the issues that may arise. Balancing the child's heritage while integrating him/her into the adoptive family can be a very complex exercise.  Adoption is an accepted route for single or married people who may have infertility problems or may not wish to bring a "natural" child into this world to start or enlarge a family. Adoption in and of itself brings new challenges beyond normal parenting, and interracial adoption adds even more.  We are an adoptive family. Our children are of diverse cultural backgrounds. I am of Scottish/Irish heritage and my husband is of Lithuanian heritage. As we prepared to adopt a child from a different racial group than ours, we realized we would have to re-evaluate what we had previously thought about adoption. While respecting our child's natural family and ethnicity, our adopted children would integrate and become ours in the adoptive sense. It is easier to integrate a Caucasian adoptee into a Caucasian family, since we don't "look" different than the child. Not so with transracially adopted children. We do look different and we have now become a minority family, potentially subject to criticism, odd remarks and prejudice from people of all races.

As an adoptee born and adopted in Ontario, my records remain closed to me. I can't obtain a copy of my original birth certificate. Closed records are common in the United States and Canada, but not in many other countries. I believe that it is my right to be able to obtain my original birth certificate, and so I am a proud member of the adoptee rights group Bastard Nation . The name may sound shocking to you, but have a look at what we're fighting for.

14. Adoption: What Adoption Issues To Expect At Different Ages (from Infancy-adult)
Hoopes and Stein) suggest that adopted adolescents were better adjusted if they came from families where all emotional issues including adoption were discussed
http://www.adopting.org/expect.html
Adoption: What to expect at different ages
(keywords: adopt, adoptee, adoption, adopting, adoptive, agency, attorney, baby, birth, birthparent, child, infant, international, support)
Now that you have adopted a child and life-is beginning to settle down, you may find your thoughts moving to the future. When shall I tell my child that s/he is adopted? How will s/he feel about it? At what point will s/he want more information? What will s/he want to know from me? How can I help my child feel comfortable about being adopted? Whether children are adopted as infants or when they are older, whether they are healthy or have physical or psychological problems, their adoption is bound to influence their development. You need to understand how and why. Learning about the developmental stages of children and what can be expected in each stage is important to all new parents. When your child has been adopted, there are additional considerations. In these pages, we will be looking at specific issuesseparation, loss, anger, grief, and identityand show how they are expressed as your adopted child grows up. Some of these issues will be obvious in all stages of development; others surface at specific times. The more thoroughly you can understand how your child behaves and why, the more likely it is that you can be supportive and help your child to grow up with healthy self-esteem and the knowledge that s/he is loved. While the stages described below correspond generally to a child's chronological age, your child's development may vary significantly. Some children progress more quickly from one stage to another; others may continue certain behaviors long past the time you would have expected. Still others may be substantially delayed in entering and moving through new stages. Many characteristics of adolescence, for instance, may not even appear until your child's twenties and may persist until your child's identity has formed.

My sister and brother in law have been going through infertility issues for the past 3 years. They have maxed out thier credit on paying for meds that arent covered by insurance. Doing so have had to file a 'partial' bankruptcy as well as continously having to deal with all the emotional issues related to being an infertile couple. They have decided on adoption to grow their loving family which we all feel is a great idea! They deserve the chance to be Mommy and Daddy... it's all they have ever wanted.
My question is... how can you go about adoption with having a partial bankruptcy in your financial history? Has anyone delt with this issue? Can you provide info on anywhere to go as far as certain agencies? Any advice/help is so appreciated and welcome.
